[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1292870] Re: WiFi sometimes connects, sometimes doesn't, sometimes stops, Kernel bug
The recent xubuntu 14.04 release has made it much easier to install new kernels on ageing Pentium Ms, which say they don't support PAE but in fact do so without problem. An additional boot parameter (forcepae) gets one going. I discovered that it was in principle possible to do this on 12.10 to 13.10 using an application add-in, but it was a little more complex to do so. The better support in 14.04 makes it all much easier. So I have now moved on to the latest kernel (and 14.04). After several days I've had no problems, so I've changed the status of this bug to 'fixed released'. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292870 Title: WiFi sometimes connects, sometimes doesn't, sometimes stops, Kernel bug Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: I am using an old Sony TR1MP 32bit laptop, ubuntu 12.04 (the system is not supported by later ubuntu versions). I use a Micronet wireless USB dongle since the inbuilt wifi is very slow, and is disabled by blacklisting it. The dongle shows if it is working since it flashes blue when it does. Lately the wifi connection often fails at boot, with the system not attempting to connect (the dongles does not light up). Sometimes it works, and then drops out later. Sometimes it reconnects by itself, sometimes not. Sometimes removing the dongle, waiting and then reinserting it works, sometimes not. Looking at syslog, I see the attached Kernel errors when the connection fails. The problem seems to have got worse recently. The wifi has always been a little unstable, but is now nearly unusable. Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.14 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as Confirmed. Thanks in advance. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1292870] Re: WiFi sometimes connects, sometimes doesn't, sometimes stops, Kernel bug
I can't run anything newer than 12.04 because support for my CPU has been withdrawn. It doesn' t have the Physical Address Extension feature (PAE) required. The laptop will never have anything like the memory required to exceed the addressing limit, but ubuntu in their wisdom have decided that doesn't matter, and so 12.04 is as new as I can go. How to I add 'a tag'? I would if I could, but I don't see any obvious way to do that. This problem has got considerably worse with the more recent kernel updates for precise. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292870 Title: WiFi sometimes connects, sometimes doesn't, sometimes stops, Kernel bug Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I am using an old Sony TR1MP 32bit laptop, ubuntu 12.04 (the system is not supported by later ubuntu versions). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1292870] Re: WiFi sometimes connects, sometimes doesn't, sometimes stops, Kernel bug
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We need some more information from you before we can start working on this bug. Please run the following command which will attach necessary information: apport-collect BUGNUMBER if you are using Karmic Koala (9.10) or newer, or apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` BUGNUMBER if you are using Hardy Heron (8.04) Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python- launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your bug report. If you are using an older release or cannot use apport please at least add the following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options): First run the following commands: 1) uname -a uname-a.log 2) dmesg dmesg.log 3) sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log 4) cat /proc/version_signature version.log then attach the files separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or tar/zip-ed). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1292870] Re: WiFi sometimes connects, sometimes doesn't, sometimes stops, Kernel bug
I did as requested. Note that I got the following error: ERROR: hook /usr/share/apport/general-hooks/cloud_archive.py crashed: Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/apport/report.py, line 719, in add_hooks_info symb['add_info'](self, ui) File /usr/share/apport/general-hooks/cloud_archive.py, line 18, in add_info if '~cloud' in packaging.get_version(package) and \ File /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/apport/packaging_impl.py, line 95, in get_version raise ValueError('package does not exist') ValueError: package does not exist No packages found matching linux. I will gladly supply more information if someone can tell me precisely what is needed. I'm not an expert at linux, but not totally useless at it either. --- AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
