Title:
  Relentless ata* error messages

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  uname -a:
  Linux beefy 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I've been getting tons of error messages like these since 12.04:

  Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.531777] ata9: SATA link down (SStatus 0
SControl 310)
  Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.531797] ata9: EH complete
  Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546141] ata9: exception Emask 0x10 SAct
0x0 SErr 0x406 action 0xe frozen
  Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546146] ata9: irq_stat 0x0040,
connection status changed
  Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546151] ata9: SError: { PHYInt CommWake
DevExch }
  Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546159] ata9: limiting SATA link speed
to 1.5 Gbps
  Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546163] ata9: hard resetting link

Sometimes, the messages will be VERY consistent, writing to the log
file almost non-stop. Other times, the messages will be sparse. But
they're always there. Rebooting seems to randomly alter the frequency
  of the messages.

I've tried swapping hardware (including disk drives and SATA cables),
altering BIOS storage options (AHCI mode, IDE mode), disabling SATA
hot swapping, and disabling SATA power management. None of these
  attempts halted the messages.

Otherwise, operation of the computer seems normal.

Please let me know if you need additional information. Thanks!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1347802] Re: Relentless ata* error messages

2014-07-23 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Did this issue occur in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new
issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.16 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1347802] Re: Relentless ata* error messages

2014-07-23 Thread musicalvegan0
Did this issue occur in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new
issue?

It definitely occurred in earlier versions of Ubuntu. The earliest I
remember it occurring was back with Ubuntu 12.04, but it may have also
occurred in version 11.10 or earlier (though I can't be sure).

As per the instructions that you provided, I installed the latest
mainline kernel the problem still exists. Marking this kernel-bug-
exists-upstream'.
