Each time the freezing happened, the mouse and keyboard weer dead and the screen was frozen in whatever content was displaying at that point. So the only think I could do is to press the power button for 5 seconds. I did update today from BIOS and I will try the 4.2 kernel again, just not today because I had more than enough and unexpected "excitement" for a day with updating the BIOS from Linux... However, like I said before, when I updated the bios, I just used the command: sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-wily Today I saw on the page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes#LTS_Hardware_Enablement_Stack a command that updates a few more packages (Xorg) in addition to the kernel when installing the 4.2 kernel: sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-wily xserver-xorg-core-lts-wily xserver-xorg-lts-wily xserver-xorg-video-all- lts-wily xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-wily libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-wily So my question is: is it enough to just try like before only updating the kernel itself, or should I try the command that updates in addition also the Xorg packages? Before today never happened. Today I did a normal system update in the morning, then a ditro upgrade which just upgraded a few unimportant packages, then the first freeze happened. Later I upgraded the kernel from 3.19.0 to 4.2.0 and after that a few more freezes happened. I installed yesterday evening linux-image-4.5.0-040500rc7-generic_4.5.0-040500rc7.201603061830_amd64.deb linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc7-generic_4.5.0-040500rc7.201603061830_amd64.deb and left the laptop on during the night (without suspending) and in the morning was still not frozen. Usually with the 4.2 kernel it would have frozen over night and it have frozen during this morning, but with the 4.5.0-040500rc7 the laptop did not freeze yet. However, with 4.5.0-040500rc7 I cannot use the proprietary bcmwl driver for my wireless card and the software update does not work properly and while installing the above linux headers package it complained about missing dependencies, howver it did install it. When I restarted my laptop in order to boot on 3.19 kernel so that I can uninstall the 4.5.0-040500rc7 kernel and install another kernel (like 4.4.5-wily) I got a system freeze: it seemed that it happened right after the system performed the logout. I cannot go to upgrade to that daily image because this is the company's laptop and I have work to do. What I can tell more than that is that yesterday after lunch I installed the kernel 4.4.5-040405-generic (from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v4.4.5-wily/) and that it did not freeze since. In addition, with this kernel I have no problems using the apt to update software (as I was having with 4.5.0-040500rc7), but I could not install the proprietary wireless driver bcmwl-kernel-source for my wireless card (Broadcom Corporation BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter) because "kernel package linux-headers-4.4.5-040405-generic is not supported". I may go and try an older kernel (but still something above 4.2, like 4.3) hoping that it will not freeze my laptop and that it will work with the bcmwl-kernel-source package.
