[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1575250] Re: close laptop lid = complete system freeze
While messing around with this I noticed that the system does actually unsuspend on recent kernels after exactly five minutes. After unsuspending the system clock is five minutes slow, to the second. There are no useful messages in dmesg, syslog or journalctl. ** Summary changed: - close laptop lid = complete system freeze + system takes exactly five minutes to wake from suspend ** Description changed: To reproduce: 1. Close laptop lid. 2. Wait a couple of minutes. 3. Open laptop lid. Result: the screen remains powered off and the system will not respond in any way. Pressing keys does nothing. Pressing the power button does - nothing. There is no disk activity but the power light is lit. The only - thing you can do is press the power button for four seconds or remove - the battery. + nothing. There is no disk activity but the power light is lit. After + exactly five minutes (to the second) the system resumes. Alistair Buxton, thanks for working on that, and ruling that out. It's one less rebuttal upstream may offer with regards to addressing the issue as soon as possible for you. Despite this, could you please test the latest mainline kernel (4.7-rc2) and advise to the results? If this is still reproducible with the latest, the next step is a standard bisection to identify the offending regression commit. ** Tags removed: bios-outdated-24cn62ww ** Tags added: latest-bios-24cn62ww ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-4.6 regression-release ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575250 Title: close laptop lid = complete system freeze Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: To reproduce: 1. Alistair Buxton, if one simply reads from the release notes of your hardware from the link I sent you, it's pretty clear your BIOS has bugs (and is in turn insecure): https://download.lenovo.com/UserFiles/Driver/en/Downloads%20and%20Drivers/S10-3T/Tem/24CN62WW-win.txt The date of release is not a reason to delay upgrading if the OS relies on keeping ones BIOS bug free. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1575250] Re: close laptop lid = complete system freeze
None of the links you provided support your claim that my BIOS is insecure or buggy. Have you tried actually reading the stuff you copy and paste every day? I would further point out that the last update for this system was released in 2010, at least four years before this bug was introduced. On top of that, no method for reflashing the BIOS of this system without installing Windows 7 or Windows XP exists, for which my system does not have a license. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575250 Title: close laptop lid = complete system freeze Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: To reproduce: 1. Alistair Buxton, as per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products /Laptops-and-netbooks/IdeaPad-S-Series- netbooks/IdeaPad-S10-3t?tabName=Downloads=Mast:SubNav:Support:Drivers%20and%20Software|Drivers%20and%20Software=false an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (24CN62WW). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. Also, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible: 1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect): sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date 2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not. 3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed. If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid. Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.6 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance.
