I tried the latest mainline kernel, 4.6.0-040600rc6-generic #201605012031 SMP Mon May 2 00:33:26 UTC 2016 x86_64 -- it still freezes in Netflix + Chrome (this time 20 or so minutes). I noticed my CPU fan was idle / lowest state - but about 8 secons after the freeze the fan went to highest speed. Intel GPU drivers seem to be the common thread here. My Acer system freezes hard with screen stuck and entirely unresponsive. It's an Acer E1-510P-2671 with 8GB of RAM. Intel Celeron N2920 processor with Intel HD Graphics (integrated graphics). I found a report on a Lenovo that describes the behavior (solid hard freeze): http://askubuntu.com/questions/760731/lenovo-thinkpad-11e- randomly-freezes-on-ubuntu-16-04 For me: playing Netflix on Google Chrome and not touching the system - it happens typically in 1 hour. Sometimes it will go 90 minutes, but I've never seen it play for 2 hours without a freeze. Fan also goes to 100%, indicating that the firmware is sensing a hot CPU - suggesting that the CPU is in a tight kernel loop. In the mainline kernel install instructions i too had noticed that it mentioned out-of-tree modules could interfere with the kernel installations, and so i wondered if they could be causing problems in other ways as well. Specifically Virtualbox. I did not see the specific error message that the instructions had listed but i had planned to uninstall virtualbox just in case. It seems i forgot to do that. I have uninstalled virtualbox and am testing 4.6.0-040600rc5-generic kernel again. Currently i have watched several youtube videos without incident, but i will keep testing. Is it possible that virtualbox is part of the root problem? Strange that it didn't cause issues in 14.04, but it would later. But not an impossible scenario. I still have yet to do the kernel bisecting as i'm still a little confused at the basic process. I have a similar issue on my Hewlett-Packard HP Z820 Workstation after upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04. I have attached the associated kernel bug log. I have the latest BIOS flashed. When this happens the system is completely unresponsive (neither Ctrl+Alt+Backspace nor Ctrl+Alt+F1 do anything). However, Alt+SysRec while typing REISUB does reboot the sytem. The out of kernel module is VirtualBox. I'm not sure if I'm seeing exactly this bug, but my desktop (old i7, 64bit) also freezes froze up on me several times since upgrade to 16.04. Looks like it's just the X server that gets borked. Every time it happened I had music playing in the browser (Google music). Display goes dark, mouse and keyboard are unresponsive, music keeps playing. Logging in via SSH and killing X sort of fixed it, but after logging back in my analogue sound output is gone (I see in Control Center > Sound only built-in digital one). Ok Christopher, i'm new to the commit bisecting stuff as i've never done that before. I read over the wiki page you linked to but i think i'm still a little confused. Can you simplify what i'm supposed to do in easier terms to understand? Basically i assume that unlike what we were doing before (testing various kernel versions) that this time we are testing the in-between kernel versions in greater depth to help narrow down where the problem is? As in i'm supposed to compile each kernel commit manually (starting with the commit that is halfway between the known good kernel and the known bad kernel to save time) and testing those? The only way is to do a hard shutdown. I'm usually in a browser when this happens, and often watching a video or two. It seems to happen more often in Google Chrome than Firefox, but it happens with both. It has happened at least once with no videos loaded. I haven’t observed it freeze / hang when I’m not in a browser, but that's mainly what i use my laptop for, so that's where most of my time is spent.
