executing the following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository 
kernel (not a mainline one) via:

Still having this problem in trusty. Pressing Fn+Z shows a volume-like 
notification but nothing happens.
Please tell me what do I have to do to collect more info about the issue.
