How to set pages mapped to a vma to all zero

2014-05-16 Thread Cheng Quan
Hi,

Suppose I have a vma belonging to a user process and in its address range a
lot of pages are mapped.

What should I do if I want to set the data of all the page frames to zero,
without unmapping any of them or mapping any new pages?

Can zap_page_range / zap_vma_ptes do that? It seems zap functions would
unmap pages.

Thanks,
Cheng Quan

[SOLVED] Re: 2.6.10 no boot

2014-05-16 Thread Marcello Stanisci
Dear friends,

the problem is that GRUB2 does not like version 2.6.10. I created a
liveCd with isolinux + kernel 2.6.10 and the system boots up fine with
it.
So the most modern toolchain able to build 2.6.10 correctly that I tested is:

gcc 3.4,
binutils 2.22.
this patch (it fix errors raised up by binutils 2.22 (and maybe lesser
ones)) - www.kernel.org/pub/linux/devel/binutils/linux-2.6-seg-5.patch,
...and avoid grub2!!

Greetings,
Marcello.

 I forgot:
if someone is cuorious about the working and non working config files
 for 2.6.10, they are:
 http://www.polarhome.com:753/~marcello/config-2.6.10-5-386 -- the
 working one from Ubuntu 5.04
http://www.polarhome.com:753/~marcello/.config -- the non working one
 from make defconfig

 Hi Marcello,

The most updated version of LDD3 code I know of is in here:
 https://github.com/martinezjavier/ldd3/

I updated most of the modules to work with Linux 3.10 when I was going
through the book. Those that do not work you can try fixing yourself,
it is mostly updating the procfs interface calls.
