This doesn’t suggest that that’s likely:
# git commit -v -s --bad-option
error: unknown option `bad-option’
usage: git commit [options] [--] …

That’s with git (git version 2.3.2 (Apple Git-55)).

Just with my kernel. When I boot on the kernel built by Debian, things
work fine, which is what has lead me to suspect a wrong kernel
configuration.

Ah that's interestng to know! Thanks!

Since it is kernel-specific I guess the bug report does nothelp, at
least I was not able to find informationin it butperhaps I overlooked?

Does it only happen with your kernel or with any kernel? I had similar
issue(but it was with any kernel, not only with custom kernels) on
Fedora, and for fixing I needed to install ACPI packages on Fedora.

This may be related:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=760090

Isn't that because of the -v option which may require this call to show
differences?

This is odd. You’re calling git commit, but you’re getting usage information
for git diff-index.

How did you install git? Have you tried reinstalling? Do you have any odd
symlinks/aliases/shell functions/ … related to git?

Kristof
