[Kicad-developers] problem with clashing hotkeys and translations

2015-04-19 Thread Marco Ciampa
There is a little problem arising in the way KiCad handles hotkeys and
translations.

All occurences of menu strings are all merged togegher in all KiCad
programs of the suite.

The more KiCad grows the more is probably is that hotkeys that are
perfectly valid in one menu will be clashing with another in another
menu of another program.

See for example the double 'p' hotkey in the Pl_Editor file menu (press
the Alt key in Ubuntu for seeing the hotkeys underlined).

Another problem arises from the fact that is not always possible to
translate different strings in different context that are rendered in
English with the same word.

As an example in English none is translated to nessuno or nessuna
in Italian depending respectively from the context male or female
object which they are referring to and I imagine that in other languages
there are similar problems.

Gettext has a way to handle it using the context:

https://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_node/Contexts.html

Will you consider to adopt such a expedient to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance,

I know a joke about UDP, but you might not get it.

I don't know if wxWidgets support this kind of context, but to tell the
True, from my point of view (I mean, the point of view of the French
translator), when this issue arises, it is mainly due the fact the label
menu is too short (therefore ambiguous), or the sentence is not
correctly built in Kicad (for instance not using a Printf syntax, but
using a code like message x y x which is never
translatable ).

Therefore, in all cases, it is due to an incorrect code.

I always prefer fix an issue than find a workaround.

So, at least for a first approach, send us where these issues are found.
I am pretty sure they can be fixed correctly.

(By the way, I do not understand the issue about clashing hotkeys:
The double 'p' hotkey (p is not a hotkey in this case) in the
Pl_Editor file menu does not create any issue because these shortcuts
are not in the same menu list )

Thanks.

I am using Linux Ubuntu, some other SO could behave differently.

I have set English language and opened Pl_Editor. If I open the file
menu, I see (pressing the Alt key) two different entries with p
underlined, meaning that there are two different p somewhere in the
strings. Print is a string used almost everywhere, see the .po file for
a list of references, and I think that there are places into that p do
not clash with other menu entries.

The strings are:

 Load Page Layout File
and
 Print

both shortcut with Alt+FP -clash

ahemmm...

tried now: the first go with Alt+FP the second Alt+FPP (pressing again P switch
betweent the menu with the same shortcut).

Sorry for the noise!
