[Koha] POLL : Kohacon11 volunteers followup meeting dates

2011-06-29 Thread Koustubha Kale
In the last Kohacon11 volunteers meeting on 29th June 2011, we asked
people to drive participation, paper submission and review of papers
during the next Koha general IRC meeting on 6th July. We decided to
hold a followup meeting of Kohacon11 volunteers one week thereafter to
review what was discussed during the general meeting.
So I am proposing a few dates and times here please make your choice.

[Koha] Inventory : barcode limit ?

2011-06-29 Thread marlened
Hello,

For those of you already using the inventory module in Koha 3.2 : how are
you dealing huge files of barcodes ? Have you experienced problems ?
I plan to upload batches of 5000 barcodes each, does it sound acceptable for
you ? Or have you performed with bigger batches ?

Many thanks in advance for your advices,

Best regards,

Marlène

[Koha] Re Linux anti-virus software and other security issues - UPDATE

2011-06-29 Thread Buster
Thanks to all who responded to my query with the very helpful information. I
went to the City Council meeting loaded for bear, but it turned out to be
unnecessary. I gave our library director a list of anti-virus programs
available for Linux and he passed it on to the councilman in question, along
with the promise we would install one. That appears to have been sufficient
to appease him.

Our agenda item remained part of the consent agenda and it passed without
question. Today we begin the process of getting Koha on board as our ILS.

I would love to just run it on a Linux server, but alas the virtual machine
on a Microsoft platform was a necessary compromise to get our IT department
on board during the RFP process. We may have been able to win that battle,
but it would have definitely been a battle, since all RFP must be approved
by the Finance Director, and IT is (oddly) in the finance department.

Thanks again for all the help.

On the one hand, it is really very nice that open source developers are
being invited by 3M into this process (ditto for you inviting us in as
well, to the extent that you're allowed to). ++ all around.

On the other hand, I am wondering why effort on 3M SIP would be more
valuable in the long term than comparable effort on the continued
evolution (and adoption) of NCIP?

I've read the March 2010 press release from 3M about the SIP 3
development process, and was a bit surprised to see that it gives a
small nod to "ISO standards" but doesn't even mention NCIP. Is the NCIP
development process broken?

Partially yes, although most of the big proprietry systems participate
in the NCIP process the number of practical applications of it is
woefully small (and even less that might be called in production ).
SIP for all its faults is being used for lots of off the shelf library
equipment (often doing things SIP was never envisioned to handle).
I think a lot of those equipment suppliers would be interested to see
what SIP3 might offer.

[Koha] SQL for items with a lot of holds

2011-06-29 Thread Cindy Weber
I'm trying to write a report that will list items with the number of
holds/items over a certain number and then list the number of holds
placed per library. Since the holds to items ratio is different
depending on the format of the item (book, DVD, CD, etc.) I'm thinking
I've got to have one report for each item type.

My initial attempt:
SELECT biblio.biblionumber, reserves.branchcode AS 'Library',
biblio.title AS 'Title', COUNT(items.biblionumber) AS 'Copies',
COUNT(reserves.biblionumber) AS 'Holds'
FROM biblio
LEFT JOIN items ON (items.biblionumber = biblio.biblionumber)
LEFT JOIN reserves ON (reserves.biblionumber = items.biblionumber)
LEFT JOIN biblioitems ON (biblioitems.biblionumber = biblio.biblionumber)
WHERE items.ccode = 'BK%'
GROUP BY biblio.biblionumber HAVING
(COUNT(reserves.biblionumber)/COUNT(items.biblionumber)) > 15

When trying to troubleshoot why this didn't return any results, I
discovered that
SELECT biblio.title, COUNT(items.biblionumber), COUNT(reserves.biblionumber)
FROM biblio
JOIN items ON (items.biblionumber = biblio.biblionumber)
JOIN reserves ON (reserves.biblionumber = biblio.biblionumber)

returned really large numbers and the items and holds numbers wer all
equal. For a specific bibionumber, it gave me 520 for both the count of
items and the count of reserves. There are 8 holds and 65 items for
that biblionumber. So it's multiplying the two counts together and
returning that as the result. Changing the JOIN types didn't help any.
Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix this?

Thanks!

Others have suggested that SIP is much more widespread than NCIP.
That's been the co-op's experience too.

Personally, I don't much care which US corporation develops standards.
I care more about how they do it. 3M have invited us in. NISO have
not. It's not clear to me whether NCIP's process allows anyone who's
not a NISO member to participate (I've read the NISO Procedures cited
on ncip.info and I still don't know - I'm often a bit thick when it
comes to bureaucracy) and there doesn't appear to be a membership
class for non-library co-ops (even OCLC seems to have joined as a
"large non-profit" rather than a group of libraries). While I'm not
wild about SIP's by-invitation process, it'd be better than
pay-to-play.

To me, the killer thing is the copyright permission notices: although
we're not allowed to develop SIP independently of 3M (boo!), we are
expressly permitted to implement it. NCIP's notice is the usual
"prior permission in writing" stupidity - anyone know if someone
writing the NCIP code (is that from Evergreen?) actually had that, or
if there's some other permission notice I've overlooked? But that's
an abyss I'm not going to look into very soon.

Hope that helps,

Hi. Thanks for the question, but to help with that, we need a bit
more information. You probably need to tell us:-

* How to obtain the error, step-by-step if possible. What z39.50
server are you searching for what terms?

* Whether that process has worked for you before and if so, the date
  when it worked.

(This is copy-pasta which you could avoid by reading the list archives
before posting. I see many bug reports that are missing vital info
like the above and this seems better than you getting no reply.)

[Koha] newbie: items from Follet export

2011-06-29 Thread Nigel Barker
Dear All,

I am the IT teacher at a very small school. For several years we have
been running debian-edu/skolelinux on our servers and workstations. So
when the librarian (who is a part-time volunteer and doesn't know
anything about library systems) told me the ageing Follet system would
no longer allow her to add books, I naturally turned to Koha. I have a
test instance running, and I can bulkmarcimport.pl the marc records
exported from Follet.

So here is my question:
Although the marc export from Follet had the "include copy info" box
checked, and I can see the barcodes in the microlif.001 file, the
catalogue on Koha has no items available for any record, and there are
no barcodes showing.
I am hoping someone with Follet migration experience will know what I
have to do.

Thanks!
