[Koha] Creating New local fields in 952 tags

2011-11-23 Thread R Sunil Kumar
Dear All,

We like to create some local holding information for a library. We do not
want to modify and use already existing 952 tags (0-9 and a-z) as most of
the tags is already used. Can anybody suggest us how to create local fields
in Koha especially in MARC local holding 952 series?

Thanks and Regards

[Koha] Installation errors in log - Koha 3.6

2011-11-23 Thread piko
Dear All, while installing 3.6 standard version on Debian 6 (squeeze) I
notice many errors logging in koha-error-log (examples shown below). I can't
find out reasons. In earlier versions of Koha (3.2.9, 3.2.10) everything was
right. What is worse in 3.6 version I can't install my preferred language
(pl-PL) in any way: before starting webinstaller (what was also impossible
in earlier versions) as well as after installation (what succeeded in the
case of 3.2.9, 3.2.10). I noticed the 3.6 version works fine but only in
english mode, despite logged errors. Any help is welcome.

[Koha] Subject headings in CAPS - convert to "proper"

2011-11-23 Thread Hartman, David W. - GBTS Library
Hello all!

My original imported data had all of the subject headings in CAPITAL LETTERS
and all of my new headings are "proper" (first letter is capitalized and that's
it). I know in EXCEL there is a PROPER command that converts ALL CAPS to the
proper 'All caps'.

Is there a command in SQL to convert my all CAPS subject heading to proper?
Or Koha? Thanks in advance for any help!

[Koha] Reading history concerns and opinions

2011-11-23 Thread David Schuster
This is a library question on policy and just curious how others are
handling it.

Reading history can be maintained in Koha - I understand that, and as a
policy we protect individuals freedom to read what they want.

As a School district - we often get the request from teachers and parents
"I need a list of what Susie has read this semester"... Currently we have
not been providing access to even the students so it is easy for us to say
"Sorry we don't keep that information"... I know we could say "Sorry that
is private student information and I can't share it", Teachers could
probably be thwarted with that, but not so much Parents...

Then the whole "FBI" coming for reading history is another issue... As we
build these features that allow "staring" and "if you read X you might
enjoy Y" or "people who read X also read Y" - what is our best avenue for
defending our clients reading history, yet making these features available
to them.

Just pondering...

I don't think that is silly at all.

You should definitely contact the EFF, if you haven't already, and
also the Free Software Foundation . You might
also want to talk to the Software Freedom Law Center
. While they might not be able to
help you directly, they might be able to give you some advice and/or a
referral.

Thanks,

2011-11-23 Thread Jared Camins-Esakov
Welcome to the community! One of the great things about the
community--possibly the greatest--is how supportive and welcoming it is.

Speaking as an American business owner, I hope that you do not take this as
indicative of the "American Way." As most of you probably know, I am in the
business of preserving cultural heritage, not co-opting it. About a year
ago I shared my feelings on the importance of openness and community, and I
still stand by what I said. Koha is a gift from Horowhenua Library Trust,
and I, for one, am very grateful for it. I am very sorry that not everyone
recognizes that, and that this absurd trademark application is an issue at
all.

[Koha] Koha routing list or routing slip question

2011-11-23 Thread Hartman, David W. - GBTS Library
Hello!

I am using the serials module for Koha and was wondering how to change the
default wording "Please return this item" for the note on the routing slip.
 It currently reads:

"Notes: Please return this item promptly as others are waiting for it."

Is there a way to remove this? I can add to this note but this phrase "Please
return this item.." seems to be hardcoded and unable to edit/remove. I'd
like to remove that wording.

It is indeed hard-coded in the template. At this point your only
option may be to edit the template. An idea for future development
would be to bring this slip into the work being done on Bug 7001:

Oh, I don't know about that. We investigated Koha and Evergreen for a year
and recently decided to go with community Koha using ByWater Solutions as a
vendor rather than LibLime largely because of LibLime's position within (or
rather, without) the community. That, and the fact its product has
basically become a proprietary system with all the weaknesses and pitfalls
of such systems. While investigating, we did visit a couple of LibLime
clients who are jumping ship as soon as they are legally able, for many of
the same reasons we eschewed it from the git-go.

So, I think it has, in fact, made a difference. People who care do pay
attention.

"Here’s PTFS/LibLime’s press release about the matter:
http://www.liblime.com/ptfsliblime-granted-provisional-use-of-koha-trademark-in-new-zealand

The TL;DR is: this was inherited—by surprise—from the previous owners. We
don’t know their intentions then, but we know ours now. We’ll hand the NZ
trademark off to a non-profit (including HLT) who agrees to continue our
practice of protecting non-exclusive use of the name."

Which sounds great to me, HLT makes that promise (as they are the community
elected body to hold community property and a registered non profit Trust)
and PTFS/Liblime can sign over the application. This could all be resolved
in a couple of days time.

I really hope this is true and the application is signed over to HLT as
soon as possible so we can put this all behind us.

There is 'lower' and 'upper', but I'm not aware of anything in MySQL
which does the equivalent of 'proper'.

Also, I think the subjects are in MARC rather than a database table, in
which case it'd be hard to do from plain sql anyway. It might be
necessary to write a small perl script to do it.
