[Koha] Upcoming CatSIGs!

2023-07-25 Thread Hernandez, Heather H
Hi, all!

Our next Koha-US Cataloging Special Interest Group ("CatSIG") is on Thursday,
July 27, 2023, at a later time, 1(13:00)PT / 4(16:00)ET / Friday at 9NZT /
20UTC! You don't have to be a member of Koha-US to join us!

For the rest of the year, we'll hold our regular monthly meetings on the first
Thursday of the month, information here:
Calendar – koha-US

And there will be a special CatSIG later in the day during the Koha-US
Conference in September! Information on the conference is here (and online
attendance is free):
https://koha-us.org/events/conferences/2023-koha-us-annual-conference-portsmouth-nh/

Remember that you don't even need to self-identify as a cataloger! There will
be our usual roundtable of questions, solutions and resource brainstorming,
tips, tricks, suggestions, bug & development awareness, and the usual laughter,
fun, and fellowship to discuss anything cataloging, authority, or metadata
related in Koha. Not sure if it's cataloging related? It probably is! Actual
catalogers do attend, as well as the cataloging curious and those who have had
cataloging thrust upon them!

Can't make it? No worries--it will be recorded and available on the Koha-US
YouTube Channel:
https://www.youtube.com/c/kohaUS/playlists
(See the Cataloging Special Interest Group's playlist for more cataloging fun!)

As ever, feel free to send me any questions or topics for discussion ahead of
time! See you there!

Please tell me, what sorts of issues might I encounter if I try to import as
many as .25 million MARC records, and what sorts of automated authorities
process might you suggest? --Eric Morgan, University of Notre Dame

Re: [Koha] [EXTERNAL] Re: ChatGPT

2023-07-25 Thread King, Fred
There has been a fair amount of discussion regarding ChatGPT on the medical
librarians' listserv. One big problem is that it tends to make up
citations--lots of libraries (including ours) have been getting requests for
nonexistent articles. Add ChatGPT to the predatory journal industry, stir in
some medical schools that require students to publish a paper before they
graduate, and you'll see why so many medical librarians feel like they have
hedgehogs trying to crawl out of their chests.

Hi Igor:

No, not lying actually. It's exactly doing what it is designed to do. It is
generative AI. Pulling up from what it already knows and tries to come up with
an answer it may not know. What it expects is the user to give it feedback to
correct the incorrect assumptions which it then tries to learn for the next
time someone asks the question.

You can see the fun if you try to use ChatGPT to generate SQL reports. it will
succeed with very simple ones. For complex ones it often makes up the db
schema. Pointing out the actual schema will train it.

Cheers,
