We're changing things up because Koha is changing things up. We're taking a
look forward at an upcoming upgrade (at least for ByWater Solutions customers)
where report links have been altered a bit. You will need to update any links
you have inserted in your Koha pages to specific reports if you want them to
continue to work. We'll show you how to do this. It's such an exciting episode,
we completely forgot how to start the show!

If you've every been perplexed by the complexities of writing reports on MARC
records, then perhaps you will find this video to be helpful. George walks us
through some SQL to dig into the 000 (Leader) field of your MARC records. He'll
also cover how this particular field affects field 008. You'll also have the
added bonus of Christopher exploring some methods of simplifying some SQL logic.

Re: [Koha] Library Membership Agreement

2024-06-17 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
I agree, you could probably achieve this with the patron attributes. Upload
the agreement in Koha and make available publicly, and put the link to that
agreement next to the attribute. Probably the easiest solution.

I don't think that is possible to do exactly what you want at the moment.

A workaround could be to use the "Patron attribute types" (Koha administration
> Patrons and circulation). Create some fields to record whether this was
completed or not.

You may be able to use the uploads tool (Tools > Additional tools >
Uploads) to upload a scanned version of your membership agreement. However, I
haven't used this tool to any great extent, and I'm not sure how you could link
it to the patron.

More tricky, and would require developing a plugin, would be to create a plugin
with a custom consent - see Bug 31503 - Allow several consent types on the
consents tab of OPAC account page (23.11). I image this could work similar to
the privacy policy consent (see the PrivacyPolicyConsent system
preference) that requires patrons to agree to the privacy policy consent in the
OPAC. However, this isn't something I have any knowledge or expertise with.

I think your best bet, unless anyone else has some other ideas, is to use
patron attributes.

Reports have turned a corner. With the ability to apply templates to reports,

some new report aspects that will help change the way you do reports.

It's spring, and time for spring cleaning! Let's start with clean prints from
reports. Sometimes when you print reports from Koha, you get extra little
tidbits like menus or wonky margins. Wouldn't it be nice to just tell the
report to print, and get exactly that? Christopher will go over a printing
technique he shared as part of an episode in season 2, and apply it to reports,
and report templates. George will be mostly bored through the whole process,
but in the end concede that Christopher has once again done a good thing for
the Koha universe. And everyone will ooh and ah.

Let's face it. We're all really lazy. And what better way to perpetuate that
laziness than to create a link that just writes email for you! Seriously. You
write a report, and it gives you the information that you need to put into an
email. But if it already has the information, why in the world do we need to
move that information into an email when we can get the report to do it for us?
I mean, come on! Maybe one day, we can get this down to such a fine science
that all we have to do is push one button and our work for the day is done. But
until then, you have this. We're just one step closer to Koha bliss.

[Koha] Koha Community on Slack

2023-12-18 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
Hi everyone!

I wanted to let you all know, several months ago we morphed the koha-US Slack
workspace into a Koha Community workspace. We have really enjoyed using Slack,
but didn't want to limit the environment to just our user group. So, we opened
it up to all.

Please note that koha-US and the Koha Community do not endorse Slack in any
way. We just recognize that there are folks that prefer communicating in Slack
over IRC. This is in no way trying to replace IRC or force any one form of
communication on the community. We simply want to provide another venue for
people to utilize. If you like Slack, great! Put in a request to join the
workspace. If not, just toss ignore this message.

Anyway, I've posted a request form to join the Koha Community Slack workspace
at https://koha-us.org/request-access-to-koha-community-on-slack/. If you fill
it out, I'll send you a Slack invite.

[Koha] New meeting time for koha-US General Meetings

2023-12-13 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
Good afternoon,
I just wanted to reach out and let everyone know that starting in January 2024,
the koha-US General Meetings will be held on the FIRST Wednesday of each month
instead of the second, but still at 10:30am Central Time. We needed to swap
days with the board meeting so our financial gurus could count all the beans in
a timely manner. It was just a little too tight for them. So, be sure to come
to the meetings on the FIRST Wednesday of the month, not the second. If you
come on the second Wednesday, you'll be in our board meeting, and we will be
sure to volunteer you for something! Just kidding, but all are welcome to the
board meeting. It's just business stuff.

For those of you that attend our monthly Conference Committee meeting, that has
also moved to the first Wednesday of the month, immediately after the general
meeting, for consistency.

I have updated our event calendar and Website to reflect these changes. Hope
to see you next month!

Sincerely,

Hi folks

We're having a WordPress web site designed for the library by our owning
institution. We're very fond of our Koha Coverflow new books carousel and we're
hoping that we can have something like it on our new web site. Has anyone had
any success with this? We've seen that there's a WordPress plugin

similar, but we've not yet had a chance to look at this properly.

[Koha] 2023 koha-US Conference Registration open through August

2023-08-02 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
Registration for this year's conference in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is still
open!

We want to see you there. Be sure to register! And, even though we offer an
online option, you should really consider coming to New Hampshire in person.

Why should you come in person??? There are several benefits to attending in
person over attending online:

Networking - build strong relationships with your peers through face-to-face
interactions which can result in long-lasting, supportive professional
connections.
New perspectives - getting out of the office, changing your environment, and
going on a mission to seek support and education will help you come back to the
workplace rejuvenated.
Brainstorming - in person events inspire people to think creatively, share
ideas, engage in problem solving, and push their own boundaries.
Risk taking - invest in yourself, step outside your comfort zone, challenge
yourself in a new environment, put yourself out there and get noticed, meet new
people who can open doors to success.
Engagement - attending a conference in person increases engagement and
participation by encouraging you to be fully present. In person attendees
benefit from eye-to-eye contact, non-verbal cues and body language that leads
to a more fluid and dynamic exchange of ideas and collaboration.
Fun - incredible, new places to eat with new and old friends and colleagues,
local culture, new experiences, and taking part in the cultural day activity
are just a few of the reasons to visit Portsmith, New Hampshire.

Register for the conference here -
https://koha-us.org/events/conferences/2023-koha-us-annual-conference-portsmouth-nh/

If you have already registered to attend online, consider coming in person.
Just let us know at conferen...@koha-us.org, and
we'll update your registration. We would love to see you there!

people from breaking Koha. Yes, despite all the hard work the community puts
in to Koha, there are still ways we can accidently cause ourselves a headache
or two. Hopefully this pill is easy to swallow. Specifically we will show how
to set a limit on creating multiple copies at once in a bibliographic record.

Sometimes math sucks. And figuring out the math for a report on permissions is
the worst. Christopher and George with share their approaches to creating
reports that will help you keep a handle on who has what permissions. While the
reports are more advanced, the outcome is quite simple and extremely helpful.
And they challenge users to find better solutions to keeping up with the

Dear all,

We are using Koha 22.05.06.

When displaying OPAC holdings on a mobile device, they are in column (or
table) format (like showing on a desktop computer). In earlier versions, they
were not displayed in such a format.

How can I change this to a non-column (or table) format, so information are
more readable?

Kind regards,

Re: [Koha] Find and searching result

2022-12-12 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
I think 90% of users (and that is generous) don't know and understand working
around Boolean, nor should they have to. They're not going to get the results
they want, and they will give up. Boolean is great if used in the advanced
search interface, but for general searches it either needs to be left out or
the results explained when Boolean kicks in. There is no good reason it should
behave this way.

Hi Tony

are you using Zebra?

If you don't want Zebra to interpret and, or and not as boolean operators, you
can use quotes around your query:
"Philosophy and education George Knight"

Hope this helps,

Tēnā koutou

It is with great sadness that I pass on to you all the news that Rosalie Blake
has passed away.
Rosalie was the Head Librarian at Horowhenua Library Trust when Koha was
started and without her Koha would not exist.
But more than this Rosalie was an amazing person, a librarian who always
thought outside the box, a gifted potter, a friend to many and a beloved mother
and grandmother.

Details around the funeral and memorial note should be available tomorrow.
But I am sure you will all join me holding Rosalie's family and friends in your
thoughts.

Tiwhatiwha te pō, tiwhatiwha te ao.

You know, I just pour my heart into Koha. I don't ask for a lot. But when I
do, it would just be nice to get some validation. What? You hear me? You
really do care about our data? It's so NICE to be validated! In fact, let's
start a small series on patron data validation.

For some reason this didn't go through last week to the list. Trying again:

We've got nothing clever to say about this episode, but the episode speaks for

can't do in Koha, then this is the tool for you. George will show you how to
connect MarcEdit to your Koha server so you can work your magic. (Some assembly

I think this is something different. The change to WELCOME does not
take place until version 22.05 according to
https://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=30237. The version
in question is 21.11.10. Correct me if I am wrong. I don't see this as
backported in the bug.

Hi,

in the new version the notice can not longer be used to sent a password
and the lettercode was changed to WELCOME. Check if you have a WELCOME
notice defined. It will also be sent through the message_queue now, so
you can check for entries in the table as well.

Hope this helps,

Katrin

Message-ID:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed

Hi

We saw in Koha 22.05 there is a new Koha menu "Administration > Manage
background jobs". Unfortunately there seems to be no entry in the Koha manual
22.05 for it, also the context-sensitive help just leads to
https://koha-community.org/manual//21.11/en/html/ (this is in an installation
of Koha 22.05!).

However the shown list has a column "progress" which can say "1/1" or "0/0" for
example. What does ist mean? Library personnel thinks "0/0"
suggests that something went wrong even if column "Status" says "Finished".
Unfortunately clicking the button "View" does not show more information like
WHAT biblio or item exactly the entry is referring to.

We saw that Bywater Solutions wrote an article about this new menu (
https://bywatersolutions.com/education/koha-21-11-background-jobs-and-task-queue-enhancements
) but our question is not answered there. Can someone please enlighten us what
"0/0" means?

Best wishes: Michael

We've slipped up again, but in a good way! Check out this week's hack where we

Michael,
I've had some jQuery in the Koha library for quite a while. You should
take a look at
https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/JQuery_Library#Add_clear_and_preset_permission_buttons.2C_and_a_copy_button_to_user_permissions_page_.28v20.x.29

There are 3 versions of this for different versions of Koha, but this
latest one includes a clear permissions button, a couple of preset permission
buttons, and a copy permissions button. Please check it out. We also did a
video tutorial on this enhancement in season one of The Terrific
Every-Other-Thursday Training Videos. You can find that here:

Hi

Is it possible to copy the permissions of another patron when creating a new

I always thought this would happen when copying/duplicating an existing patron.
But when I actually tried it today the permissions were not there with the new
patron and I had to set them manually.

in the titles! That's right! You too can slash the slash! Simply watch this

in staff AND OPAC searches without all those pesky trailing slashes! (Only
applies if you modify the XSLT to remove authors and contributors from the
title line and may not be valid in all 50 states (just kidding). Side effects
may include spontaneous jumping for joy after endless ranting about slashes
being part of the MARC standard for titles, and may alleviate strange looks
from co-workers as you recount your annoyance at the existence of characters
mixed in with your data which would otherwise be pristine.)

Hi

Our library is working with Debian GNU/Linux 10 and Koha 21.05.05.

Since the update the check out process does no more respect the circulation
conditons regarding the due date (the loan period is 1643
days) but instead sets the due date to the current date!

So If I check out a book today the due date is today.

2021-06-02 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
Michael,
My knowledge on this is limited, but off the top of my head, I would say no,
you can't create an account through this method. As you said, Shibboleth is
just about authentication. You could setup a link to the separate online
registration, and have it in a category that would authenticate right off the
bat, but people might abuse that. There should be a staff member that
moderates registrations...until Koha can do it on it's own. That is not likely
to happen if multiple accounts can use the same e-mail address.

Hope this helps.

Hi

We are trying to implement Shibboleth with Koha. As far as I understand
Shibboleth is just about authentication (allowing users to sign in using
just one identity to various systems).

Now the library (that doesn't want to link Koha to LDAP directly)
suggests that Koha should create a user the first time when that user
logs into Koha through Shibboleth resp. the single sign-on IDP. The SSO
IDP is using underlying LDAP to give back the "mail" and "uid"
attributes from LDAP.

Is it possible that Koha autocreates new users this way?

I couldn't really find the answer to this or the way to go in
https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwiki.koha-community.org%2fwiki%2fShibboleth_Configuration=E,1,cV_OOHSDy3SNMgiIuSEjnZToJWHmwXU8dBOKfJV-R60l4JcZL39sUEC-Kyo62R7hyQksCiqmwerZWJkRUlxn7-ZbT_3tBAE_SR0EuhoMRu0,=1
 but then
again I am trying to implement Shibboleth in Koha the very first time...

Our self check stations consist of a touch screen, a small computer that mounts
to the back of the touch screen, a barcode scanner and a receipt printer. You
don't need anything more than that. You can use Koha's self check software, or
there is other software, free or paid. If you want more information, feel free

Hi koha community,

is there an easy way to temporarily disable the hold notice for all patrons?
Letter code HOLD.

We want to skip hold notices for a few weeks, then turn them back on.

Is there a syspref? Do we have to manipulate the message preferences of every
patron?

Re: [Koha] OPAC Browsing Kiosk

2020-01-16 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
Joel,
The best free kiosk software I have found is OpenKiosk. It is built
off FireFox. I don't know that you will be able to do what you want with
removing logins, holds and carts without some smart jQuery based on IP
addresses. However, I can tell you, we use this in our library for all our
catalogs and self checks, and it works great. It will reset the session,
removing history, and any logins. You can set how long it sits idle before
resetting, and it will warn the user in case they are still there. You can
remove navigation, so it only depends on where the site you point to takes
them. But if you want to make the links in the 856u field, I would suggest
jQuery to make them inert, again, based on IP. You could whitelist the catalog
in the OpenKiosk settings, but you would also have to whitelist all the
resources it relies on. So, it would take some work, however you approach it.
Otherwise, you would probably be better off setting up a second catalog
address that you could customize for this purpose.

I hope this helps.

I'm investigating adding a kiosk to our library. I can handle getting a
generic workstation to load the web site I ask for in full-screen/kiosk
mode on my own, but I'm having a hard time finding how to get Koha to show
a view that won't allow breaking out of the kiosk.

I want the following features:

   1. Disable external links, especially anything in an 856u field.
   2. Disable logging in. We don't want someone walking away and leaving
their account active for someone else to use.
   3. Since you can't log in, there's no need to show things like "Place a
   hold" or "Add to cart"
   4. This needs to happen ONLY in the kiosk view. That is, we also want
the OPAC to work normally when accessed from other places.

This will not be used for self-checkout, at least at this time. We're
talking about using this instead of the old-school card catalog for someone
who can't browse via a phone or other device.

The idea is this is a walk-up machine in the library, and rather than using
a feature like Lists the patron will write the call number on scratch paper
provided right there and immediately go pull the book, which is likely to
be located within 15 yards of the kiosk. But patrons should still also be
able to do all those other things when viewing the kiosk from home or other
locations.

Our staff would like the option to cancel only selected items on the Holds Over
tab in the Holds awaiting pickup table. Staff could select the group of holds
they want to cancel and do it as a batch. The development would add a checkbox
next to each item, along with a 'Cancel Selected' button next to the 'Cancel
All' button, with a confirmation. Bywater has provided a quote of $2,000 for
this development. If we could get 10 interested libraries it would only be
$200 per library. I would love to know if you are interested in this type of

Re: [Koha] Separate hold queues?

2017-04-01 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
Andreas,
Our consortium simply does not show the patron where they are in the
queue. We find it to be misleading, due to the number of items available to be
placed on hold, local holds priority, cancellations, and high demand loan
periods that kick in. Plus there is the rare occasion a hold is shifted.
Showing that information is just inviting patrons to try and manage what the
system is doing. We do let them know how many requests are on the record, but
that is it. We never let them know where they are in the queue, even if they
ask. This has worked very well for us.

Hi all!

We are at Stockholm University Library experiencing some difficulties with how
Koha is currently handling hold queues, and are considering development in this
area. Are there any other libraries who are experiencing similar issues (see
below), and would be interested in the development of separate hold queues? Or
have an opinion on whether this would be a good/bad idea?

In Koha today it is possible to limit the fulfilment of holds per branch (same
pick-up location as home/holding library) and item type. For us, it makes most
sense to view this as several hold queues for one bibliographic record. For
example: a person queuing for a book from the textbook collection (item type =
”TC”) isn’t actually queuing for books for the general collection (item type =
”GC”). But Koha handles this as one big queue. This isn’t a problem for the
holds per se, as Koha only fetches the book that has the right criteria to fill
the hold (i.e. the correct item type or home/holding library) but it has proven
to be an issue for our patrons.

As Koha displays it as one big queue, it might seem that the queue is much
bigger that it actually is. This has confused a number of patrons, and have
discouraged others from placing holds. Continuing our example: a book has three
patrons on hold for item type GC, when a new patron adds a hold for TC. This
makes this person number four in the queue in Koha today, making the patrons
believe that they will have to wait weeks or months for the book (in our
library TC is 7 days, GC 28 days) when in reality it is only one week.

For us, this would better be described as two queues:
One with 3 patrons on hold (General collection) One with 1 patron of hold
(Textbook collection)

The same is true for hold fulfilment that require pick-up location to be the
same as home/holding library (i.e. hold fulfilment per branch). Say a public
library also have a school library in it’s organization, that is a special case
where books from the other libraries should not be sent to the fulfil holds, or
vice versa. As in our example above it would be better to display queues
separately so 5 holds at the main library won’t discourage a student from
placing a hold on that same book at the school library.

So my question is basically, is there are other libraries out there who are
using any of these hold fulfilment features (or would like to), and would want
to see a new feature to separate/split hold queues? Or who could see the
benefit of such a feature.

Please note that separate hold queues would of course only come in effect if
any system preference that limits hold fulfilment is set to allow. Also, this
would not effect holds to pull.

I look forwards to hearing people’s opinion about this!

Best regards,
Andreas

Re: [Koha] Finding patron's previous card number?

2016-06-17 Thread BRANNON, CHRISTOPHER
Actually this is a very common problem. We run into the same issue here, and
unless we record the change in patron notes, we have no way to know the old
number unless the patron recalls it.

It would be great if the logs recorded these types of changes.

Regarding 5 - Why would anyone checkout items they don't have in their hands?
Checking out from the cart seems like a good way to confuse everyone if the
item can't be found.

Hello all,

Offering some hopefully constructive criticism of the self-checkout module
et cetera.

Details:
I've just finished upgrading to Koha 3.22.04, with Perl 5.02.

The following are enabled:
AllowSelfCheckReturns
AutoSelfCheckAllowed
AutoSelfCheckID
AutoSelfCheckPass (with the info of a staff user who had first circulate,
and later superlibrarian permissions)
WebBasedSelfCheck

1. First off, the information in the Koha manual in section 5.12 has been
unchanged since version 3.8. I believe the code snippet that's meant to be
pasted into IntranetUserJS is incorrectly formatted. I can't get it to work,
after having removed the line breaks and fiddling with various things. To
access the SCO, therefore, I've used a plain HTML hyperlink which is
inserted in "opacheader". This works fine.

2. It turns out that users must be assigned a card number in order to use
either the barcode OR the username/password logins to the SCO. This was
probably a dumb error on my part, but it's not a totally obvious dependency
either as far as the u/p login is concerned.

Anyway, after that the SCO allows a patron with no permissions to log in,
either with barcode or with u/p, and check out books by barcode. The SCO
correctly displays a blue message with the right username.

3. In 3.22 the bug where one would return to opac-main logged in as the
checkout staff user has been fixed; however it now redirects to a log-in
screen rather than the catalog main page, which I don't really like. I'll
toy with this. The most seamless Apple Inc. solution would be to return
someone to the main screen still logged into their patron account, but
perhaps the recent SCO bugfixes have ruled this out.

4. In the SCO files by default the "koha" header in the top left corner is
pointed to /opac/sco/sco-main.pl. This is useless. I fix this by editing
/usr/share/koha/opac/htdocs/opac-tmpl/bootstrap/en/includes/masthead-sco.inc,
and replacing the link in line 7 with /cgi-bin/koha/opac-main.pl so that
someone can click "Koha" to escape the SCO. This seems much more intuitive
to me. (Adding a "home" link would serve the same purpose, but this is
easier.)

5. Very ambitious - I would really like the capacity to dump the contents of
the cart into the self-checkout so that it is a one-click process (barring
the login), but I think I lack the programming knowledge for this. Some sort
of simple script which saved the contents of the cart and then injected
barcodes one by one into the self-checkout, automatically, is what I'm
envisioning. Most of the parts required seem to be already there. I will
experiment and probably open this as its own question at some later point.
Any pro bono contribution to this would be very much appreciated.

At this point the only actual PROBLEM is that SCO users are unable to return
books through the SCO. I click the return button on an active checkout and
nothing happens - the page reloads and the item is still checked-out. It
seems like all the right preferences are on. If I figure this out I'll post;
if anyone else has resolved please let me know.

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: [Koha] [ByWater Partners] [Koha North America] Your suggestions for a new name of Koha NA

I think too many people have too much time on their hands to squabble about
stuff. We could waste a LOT of time trying to come up with something
wonderful, that rolls off the tongue, and is a cool acronym, and offends the
least amount of people.

I vote for Koha Super Duper User Group!

Has anything like this idea ever been proposed for Koha? A Netflix-like holds
queue that patrons can set up?

https://alissadale.wordpress.com/2011/10/03/i-want-a-library-book-queue/

It was suggested on our statewide Tech group, and I was intrigued enough by the
idea that I thought I'd inquire...

The conference committee has not made any decisions at this time on the next
meeting. However, it will definitely be in a different region. For sake of
fairness, it will most likely be mid or western states for 2016.

Good morning everyone,

I am putting together some budget information for 2016 and I am curious if
anyone in North America is thinking about where the 2016 NA user's group
meeting will be.

It just helps me to get as accurate data as possible,

Thank you in advance,

Jesse
