They are stored in the db. (see the link Nicole posted) This was originally
to avoid security issues involved in writing to the file system.

2)where i have to define the source where i dowload photos?

You can upload patron images individually by accessing the patron account
in the staff interface. Bulk upload is also possible via the Tool menu in
the staff interface.

3)How is made the link between the borrower and his photo (all the
 borrowers com from our ldap)?

I'm not quite sure how to answer this one given that I am not familiar with
Koha's ldap code. Maybe someone else can comment who uses both ldap and
patron images.

First off, using that barcode sequence is a bad idea. It was a bad
idea and should really only be retained for backward compatibility for
libraries currently using it. Sequential is a better choice.

This phenomena occurs because of the interaction of a short
(char-wise) barcode number and poor barcode image scaling code. The
quickest solution is to start your barcodes at some number starting
with a non-zero digit and containing five or more digits.

At present that adjustment would require changing some code.

In the patron card tool these spacings are adjustable in the sense that
the position of each element may be specified. That tool was written after
the label tool and so the label tool missed out on that feature.

At this point with the clear consensus that a CSS based printing tool is
better, the odds of the current label tool having this implemented are
pretty low.

Our Library Online Public Access Catalogue or OPAC
 --**--

We are pleased to announce that our library catalogue is now online at
 http://opac.**navalmarinearchive.com http://opac.navalmarinearchive.com.
It currently contains over 20,000 books - all that remains to be done is to
catalogue the remaining 15,000 books, 250,000 magazines and journals, 2,000
charts, several hundred paintings and engravings, and all the other
documents, files and manuscripts at The Victory.

Importantly, we are now formally accepted as an international library
(CaOPIACS) and have access to major libraries for automatic retrieval
[Z39.50] of their bibliographic records. Reciprocal use of our records by
other libraries is planned in the near future.

This online library project has been achieved by an investment of about
1,400 hours of volunteer time into designing and implementing the system
(including limited import of some of our spreadsheets), and continues with
between 20 and 40 volunteer hours per week in cataloguing. In-house testing
continues to make progress on the very complex matters surrounding
efficient cataloguing of our periodicals; we tentatively plan on putting
these fully on-line by mid-2013, but in the meanwhile all work stations in
the library have access to this work-in-progress.

Technically, it involves a new 64-bit web server on our premises with
enhanced internet connectivity, running a Linux operating system. This has
allowed us to develop a customized version of the Koha open-source library
 system.

Call numbers are split based on a standard splitting algorithm. As far as I
know there is no way at present to force call numbers to be stacked in the
manner you want. Perhaps with Dewey numbers one might add lots of
segmentation markers as the splitting code should honour those, but that's
a heap of work. Fixing up the code to add an option would be much quicker

[Koha] Fwd: Koha Database Migration

2012-10-25 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Yesan,

Please send your support requests to the Koha User's list. You will
have a much greater chance of getting a response that way.

You should be able to do an in place upgrade. After taking a backup
of your current database, just install the new version of Koha and
browse to the staff interface to run the installer. There is also at
least one script you will need to run from the command line to remove
the items from the bibs.

Probably the best way is to move to the packages. I believe there is a
way when installing from the packages to import your existing
database. Check out koha-create for more on that. Also, I think the
packages will run all of the necessary back-end scripts. Someone else
will correct me if I'm wrong.

 Hi Lori,

We don't do this exactly. Instead we create these checkout sheets for
each grade of the elementary school. We store the grade level information
in the sort 1 field, write a report to export the patron name, grade level
and barcode number, run the spreadsheet through another program (not open
source) that creates a scannable barcode image for each patron. We then
import the barcode images one by one into a word document where we group
them by grade so that the librarians have a scan sheet for each grade.

We use Koha's patron card creator to create a patron card batch for each
class/grade and use a template generate scan sheets for each which contain
the student's name and barcode.

I'd imagine that the the patron search could simplify the batch creation
for larger schools.

You may safely ignore those warnings.

Before I had created brdglibrary I had tried creating a few other

work. It appears that when it tries to drop the mysql user, it fails
because it doesn't pass the name of the instance properly to the DROP

I'm not sure about this. Someone more familiar with the packages will have

[Koha] Branch Specific System Preferences

2012-03-22 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Recently the need has arisen locally to run the self-checkout (sco) under
multiple user accounts to accommodate multiple branches using the sco
module. To the best of my understanding this is not currently possible due
to the way in which the user for the sco module is defined using a system
preference. While there may be a number of ways to accomplish this, it
seems that it may be desirable to have a category of branch specific
system preferences. This would be an attempt to group system preferences
into one of two general categories of global or branch. Before
launching out into writing such a feature, I thought I'd run it by both
lists to see if a) I'm way off base, b) if such a feature is desirable, and
c) if I'm off on an insanely hard project.

 To: lis-fo...@ncsi.iisc.ernet.in, fran...@ncsi.iisc.ernet.in

 Dear Professionals,

I am happy inform you all that our University Library Web OPAC has gone
 the
 * mobile way*.  We
have adopted open source library automation system KOHA for all our house
 keeping activities
including OPAC and the same has been made available in cloud hosting
 environment. Anybody
can access our OPAC on *Mobile* at site
 http://mopac.mysore-univ.org/

To see what it looks like in a mobile phone, please use following site on
 your desktop/laptop:
 http://iphonetester.com/?url=http://mopac.mysore-univ.org/

Apple claims to have sold record number of Smart-phones smashing the the
record of PC sales. The same has
been the fate with Laptops and notebooks.
 (

 http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/smartphone-sales-exceed-those-of-pcs-for-first-time-apple-smashes-record/
 )
Internet access through Mobile has become the order of the day. This being
the case, I strongly feel that all of us
should go the mobile way for our OPACs.

Our patrons can use their mobile for reserving, renewing the documents and
 all related activities.
We are working towards using Mobile SMSs for overdue reminders, informing
 the availability of
reserved documents, documents purchased against requests, broadcasting
 important library
 related messages, etc.

The automation model we have adopted is *-* Centralised database,
 decentralised inputting/
housekeeping activities and Universal access to OPAC. Once completed the
 OPAC will
have 10 Lakh records of documents available in colleges, institutes, PG
 Centres and various
departments, which are directly under the control of Mysore University.

We acknowledge OSS Labs, Bangalore for having given quality, timely and
 cost effective service to us
in this matter. Probably ours is the first university library to go mobile
way for OPAC (?). Please have a
look at it and give your feedback, enabling us to improve the service.

 Regards,

 Dr. I.R.N. Goudar
 Visiting professor and Library Adviser
 University of Mysore

These may be safely ignored. They are harmless.

After database upgrade is done, I get the following error in web browser:

 Software error:

Can't call method delete on an undefined value at
 /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Auth.pm line 717.

This is unrelated to the above. It appears that there is no session object
or something is otherwise broken about the session. Perhaps clearing
cookies, flushing browser cache, or truncating the sessions table would
help.

How did you do your installation of 3.6.3?

Koha is a web-app and as such does not run in the sense of a traditional

The .tt didn't need it, but the .inc did (maybe a quirk of my install of
 memcached.)

You are probably being caught in the caching trap in general. In order
for you changes to show up in the user's browser, either do a shift-F5
refresh or otherwise clear the browser's cache.

Your memcached cache may need flushing depending on what it is caching as
 well.

Without digging into the code, it is probably set in the calling template

I would suggest becoming familiar with Firebug. It is your best friend when

This is not a bug, per se. It will always happen when the list of servers

[Koha] 3.4.x Branch and 3.4.8 Release Update

2012-01-21 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Hi All,

I've just had time to bring the 3.4.x branch current with master. We will
be releasing 3.4.8 next Saturday.

There are a huge number of commits made in the last 8 hours, so I'd like to
call for some testing on 3.4.x before the release next Saturday just to
avoid any obvious bugs.
So if you have a chance to, please test and let me know if you discover
anything.

Re: [Koha] database migration 3.2 to 3.6

2011-12-07 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Hi Paul,

It's really rather straight forward:

1. Backup your db
2. Get you new installation up and running completely over the default db.
3. Restore db to your new installation (using msyql client, and call
it whatever you like so long as you update koha-conf.xml to reflect
the new name)
4. Koha will automatically bring the older db up to date after the restore.

If you have template customizations, you are in for a bit more of a
ride. I think there is a script done by Chris C which may help convert
tmpl stuff to tt stuff, but there will probably be much hand work to
do after that.

Kind Regards,
Chris

 details, preferences etc.

We have built a new server (Ubuntu 11.10 with mostly Debian Squeeze added
modules) LAN only. It is not dedicated to Koha, but also serves several
internal websites and databases.  All is now fully functional, and we are at
the point of running Makefile.PL (i.e, all Perl, Apache, Zebra, MySQL etc
has been double checked in preparation for Koha 3.06.01).

We are looking for advice as to:

        - at what stage (before or after Koha installation) should we copy
over the current kohadb and how should we do this? Preferably we would like
 to rename it to koha306db.

        - is there a detailed write up anywhere on the data
migration|conversion for the new template usage?

        - any other advice on potential difficulties, errors, pitfalls etc

 Thanks - Paul

[Koha] Request for Koha data for development

2011-11-18 Thread Chris Nighswonger
A common problem among those of us who do development work on Koha is
the lack of complete datasets for the development and testing of
features. This is probably more of a problem for those of us who do
not support a large variety of organizations running Koha.

I would like to see some good, sanitized datasets available for
development and testing. Several of us have plead for this for years.
Just now, the lack of a good dataset including a sizable number of
serials is preventing me from doing some testing and development on
DataTables integration work which has been started by Biblibre.

So, this is a request to all of you libraries out there with small,
medium, and large datasets who would be willing to contribute
sanitized data for development purposes, to do so. It would be a great
way to give back to the community that has provided such a wonderful
product with all of its attendant benefits.

Kind Regards,
Chris Nighswonger

Re: [Koha] Printing Patron Barcodes

2011-11-12 Thread Chris Nighswonger
2011/11/12 S Anand sanand1...@gmail.com:
 Dear all,

We need to print only the Patron barcodes ( not the Patron Cards), and past
them on to the Staff/Student ID cards - already issued to them by our
 Institution.

Can someone guide me as to how to print only the Patron barcodes?

We are printing barcodes for books on A4 size label sheet having 5 columns
and 13 rows.  The same way, we need to print the Patron barcodes.

Just setup a template in the patron card creator for whatever size
labels you like and then setup a layout which only prints the barcode.
We do this for situations where we need patron barcodes separate from
patron cards.

Chris

Re: [Koha] Koha and Third-Party commercial services

2011-11-05 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Hi Ian,

2011/11/5 Ian Walls ian.wa...@bywatersolutions.com

Am I being crazy? Is this a valid issue? Are the advantages of being
able to talk to more external products greater than the risks of a few
specific company's products getting hardcoded into our ILS?

The point is well taken. However, I tend to think that if we were to
isolate the unique code for external product Z to something like
C4::ExternalServices::Z. and the database fields unique to a new table Z,
this would sort of quarantine any undesirable aspects of product Z. The
installation of the schema for table Z could be triggered by both a choice
in the installer or the running of an separate install script (install_z)
later by the sys-admin. The installer would simply call install_z if the
choice was made at install time. install_z would recognize that the db was
populated (if this were a later addition) and handle any db housework
accordingly.

Furthering this thought of convenient abstraction, we could have
C4::ExternalServices which would provide basic API between Koha and the
various C4::ExternalServices::FOO modules.

Whatever way we take, quarantining/abstraction should help keep your fear
from being realized.

Chris

Dear Chris Nighswonger cnighswon...@foundations.edu

May I request you for your kind help of my KOHA problem.

My Institute is India Government funded research Institute located in
Kolkata, India.

We have been using KOHA last one year. We are having the following problem,
we would be grateful to you, if you could kindly solve our problems as we
are worried. We have been using open source software for our library since
long time. We also use DSPace.

Can u help us on my KOHA problem.

The following are main problems :

*KOHA PROBLEMS-

1. Rebuild Zebra--- aborty after about 9000

2. Searching catalogue for books-showing about 560 list where as more than
11000 in the DB.

3. In case of Bound volume Journal it is showing ok.

3. In Database (MySQL)

Item type table has 13 fields specifying the item types

But in the table items and biblio itemtypes the itype and itemtypes
contains data with values “Book” which is not present in the itemtype. Some
itemtypes are “Null” which should not be the case.

On deleting the records with itemtypes “Null” and “Book”, it is not changing
the situation.

Can u give me solution for this ?

With deep regards.

 Tom,

Until you can either update your Koha install to 3.6, or downgrade Firefox
to below 7, you can disable the staff client Cart to restore logout. It's
an unfortunate tradeoff, but it does provide you a temporary workaround
until you can get a more permanent solution

This is a known bug, I believe, and a fairly recent one:
 http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=6970

logout not redirecting to login page - Staff logout does not reload the
login page. Seems to be an issue with Firefox
7.x since it works properly in 6.x and prior.

The encouraging thing is that the patch for the problem is attached to the
bug and is in 3.6 (and will likely be picked back into a future 3.4
 revision).

 Hi,

I'm in the middle of my first Koha install. I'm running on CentOS 5.7 with
perl 5.8.8. The Koha INSTALL file says 'You need to have a server running
 perl 5.8.8 or later',

but 'make test' is failing due to perl 5.10-isms (eg C4/Search.pm line 497
 'unless ( $data ~~ @used_datas )'.

I believe we actually require 5.10 at this point. The INSTALL files
should be updated to reflect that.

IIRC 3.2.x was the last branch that used 5.8.8.

In all of the work I have done on the labels code, I have never worked with
the 'alternating' layout option. I think this was originally intended to
do this sort of label. That's what it looks like in the code at least. You
could give it a try and see. I'm sure it will take some work at developing a
template which will work correctly with the LSL04 set.

Give it a try and post back the results.

After a quick look, this is not possible due to the current
limitations in the template interface. Expanding the template
interface to accommodate this sort of thing would not be too
difficult. Assuming the 'alternating' layout type works as expected,
the changes to the template interface would be all that was needed.

I've opened a bug for such an enhancement. You may find it here:

only string affecting patches that will be accepted at this point are
blocker and security related bugs. Other patches will be pushed up to the

HELP!!!
To: cnighswon...@foundations.edu

 Hi All,

Before upgrading from Koha 2.2.9 on Windows Server 2003 to Koha 3, I set up
a virtual test server of Koha 3 on my Mac with this test install using
Zebra.

With Zebra enabled in my test environment, I found that when I added items
to the Bibliographic database, I had to wait a good ten minutes for Zebra to
reindex before that Bibliographic Record/Item Record would appear in the
OPAC, whereas with 'NoZebra' the Bibliographic Record/Item Record appears
immediately in the OPAC once you click 'add' in the Staff Client.

I like to know I have the functionality of when I add in an item to the
system, that it will instantly appear in the OPAC, and not have to wait ten
minutes for Zebra to reindex every time a record is added to the database.

My test environment was on a Intel Core 2 Duo machine with 4GB RAM. I hope
that sheds some further light on my choice of 'NoZebra'.

I'm hoping there is someone out there in the Koha Community whom is able to
help me past this problem I'm having.

Kindest Regards,
Joel

It should probably be pointed out that No Zebra code will probably be
removed at some point in the future. So along with the fact that it is
deprecated and unsupported, it is really a dead end road as well.

I should add that collections over 10k, we usually really recommend using
Zebra for indexing.

As a data point for you, I have run a functioning library with 8k or so
records with zebra on a P4 with 1G of RAM. So, zebra isn't *that* big of a
hog. You could do it on very modest hardware.

Our database contains approximately 13,600 Bibliographic records, and we

Joel,
Sorry to hear you're having trouble. I have a few questions, if you don't
mind.

What operating system are you running Koha on?
Which minor release of 3.4 (the last digit is important)?
Is this a new install or an upgraded install?
If it is an upgraded install, was the previous install running with the
zebra indexer or with the nozebra preference set?
If it's Zebra, have you done a full reindex?
(/home/koha/kohaclone/misc/migration-tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -v)
Do you get results when you search?
Are you using a translation?
Have you changed or edited your bibliographic frameworks?

The answers to these questions will help us figure out where to begin
suggesting fixes for you.

Thanks!

[Koha] 3.4.x String Freeze and Roadmap Update

2011-07-14 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Hi all,

My apologies for my low profile of late. My job schedule has kept
me mostly away from my office and off the computer of late.

In spite of this, the monthly 3.4.x release is on schedule. As of
UTC 15 July 2011, 3.4.x is in a string freeze. 22 July 2011 will be
the date of the 3.4.3 release. At this point the only patches that
touch strings which will be accepted are blocker and security fixes.
Non-string patches will still be applied up to the date of the
release.

3.4.x will thaw immediately following the 3.4.3 release.

I did some work with ExtractValue and marcxml a while back and IIRC this has
to do with the way ExtractValue returns the data from the xml. I was unable

Chris, in this library's case (cause they do have professional
catalogers) the subject headings all end in periods ... could we use
 that instead of the comma/space?

Assuming there were no periods embedded anywhere else in the data its
possible. The 'foo' I mentioned amounts to writing a stored procedure in
your db do handle the splitting since MySQL does not have a splitting
function. So it would require some coding apart from the reports tool in

 Dear Sir/Madam,

We need some answers and support based on Koha Version 3.4.1.

You may want to have a look here for your support options with Koha:

http://koha-community.org/support/

We are having problems like, if two people reserve the same book at the same
time, there is no circulation email.

We'll probably need more detail to help with this sort of problem such
as: Do you have a mail server setup for Koha to use? Are any Koha
emails sent successfully? Etc.

Also, does the support for Koha have a cost for the service??

That depends upon the type of support you need. If you need one-on-one
phone support, you will most likely need to contract with a Koha
service provider. There are several excellent choices located at the
above link.

If you can tolerate a little slower support, volunteer support is
available via the list you have emailed. Just send along an email
giving as much detail as possible concerning your issues and someone
will usually respond in a reasonable amount of time.

IRC is another option as well for volunteer, real-time support.

I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible to help us use your
 product most effectively and efficiently,

Again, welcome to the community! We certainly hope your involvement
with Koha will be long and prosperous.

[Koha] 3.2.x String Freeze and Roadmap Update

2011-05-09 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Hi All,

We are going to keep with May 15, 2011 for the 3.2.8 release which puts
3.2.x into a string freeze as of today. The 3.2.x branch has quite a few
commits since 3.2.7, so this will be an important release. 3.2.x will thaw
on May 16.

Subsequent 3.2.x releases will be largely dependent upon commits available
for back porting and patches submitted directly against the 3.2.x branch. At
present, the plan is to support 3.2.x through 3.2.10 *if* there are
commits/patches to do so. When we get to 3.2.10 or when it is clear we will
not get there, I'll add a monthly IRC meeting agenda item to discuss EOL for
the 3.2.x branch.

As always: Thanks to all the individuals who have put time, effort, and
money into making Koha a great ILS!

I think its fairly safe to say that any version 1.3.5 or newer should work
just fine. The general consensus tends to be a little conservative about
upping required versions in Koha often preferring to reflect the minimum
required version rather than the latest stable release.

Anyway, I'm a little bit loath to force an install of ~96 Mb of code if the
functional impact on Koha 3.4 is minimal, or could be fixed with just a
 couple of lines somewhere else.

 Any thoughts, please?

None of the labels/patron card features will work w/o G::M. Beyond that, I'm
not sure, but don't think much else would be affected.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Re: [Koha] perl modue Graphics::Magick not found

2011-04-29 Thread Chris Nighswonger
 2011/4/29 Mizst Audens mizs...@gmail.com

For Ubuntu, 1.3.12 is actually the newer version found in 10.10 and is
stable. 1.3.5 is an older version from 9.10. The dependency checker tool in
Koha simply parses the version number incorrectly so it believes that you
 have a lower version.

 Then I install GraphicsMagick-1.3.7-4.el5.x86_64.rpm and
 GraphicsMagick-devel-1.3.7-4.el5.x86_64.rpm

Still after running my program which is called koha, it gives me error

What is the solution, is it version issue or something else?

[Koha] Koha 3.2.7 is now available

2011-04-16 Thread Chris Nighswonger
 ./koha_perl_deps.pl -u -m to get a list of
any new modules to install during upgrade.

Upgrades
==

The structure of the acquisitions tables have changed significantly
from 3.0.x. In particular, the budget hierarchy is quite different.
During an upgrade, a new database table is created called fundmapping
that contains a record of how budgets were mapped. It is strongly
recommended that users of Koha 3.0.x acquisitions carefully review
the results of the upgrade before resuming ordering in Koha 3.2.x.

Documentation
==

As of Koha 3.2, the Koha manual is now maintained in DocBook. The
home page for Koha documentation is

[Koha] 3.2.x Roadmap Update

2011-04-16 Thread Chris Nighswonger
Hi all,

With the release of 3.2.7 and the eminent release of 3.4.0, I want to let
the community know what my plans are moving forward.

Due to the excellent work during the recent hack-fest sponsored by Biblibre,
there were a multitude of bugfixes which did not make it into 3.2.7. My
plans are to begin work on getting these backported into the 3.2.x branch
over the next week or so. Because there are such a large number, I will be
releasing 3.2.8 on May 15, 2011. I had originally intended to go to a
bi-monthly release schedule for 3.2.x after the release of 3.2.0. This will
still be the case, but will be delayed until the release of 3.2.8.
Subsequent 3.2.x releases will take place on the 15th of the month with
3.4.x releases taking place on the 22nd of the month.

***Translators please take especial note of the above dates.***

As long as there are commits to backport to 3.2.x, I will release on a
bi-monthly schedule. If there are no commits during a two month period, no
release will be made.

If you have template related bugfixes you want included in 3.2.x, it will be
your responsibility to ensure that they apply correctly to the current 3.2.x
branch. With the switch to TT in master, backporting template commits will
be nigh impossible. Of course any related underlying logic changes should be
applicable to the current 3.2.x branch as well.

After the 3.2.10 release, I will add an agenda item for the next monthly IRC
to discuss EOL of the 3.2.x branch. The results of that discussion will
determine the direction of 3.2.x from that point forward.

I plan to handle 3.4.x maintenance in the same fashion as I have handled
3.2.x. If anyone has any suggestions for improvement, please speak up! I'm
very open to suggestions, critiques, etc.

Thanks to everyone for the hard work being put into Koha lately. Things have
moved along at a fantastic rate! Keep up the good work.

Kind Regards,
Chris Nighswonger

Before I start adding more Authorized values to a near-production Koha

I'll let others answer the other questions, however, I trust that before you
add, subtract, do-any-sort-of-foo to your near-production DB, you make a
quick backup of it using mysqldump Then you can try all sorts of things
w/out worry.

Better yet, setup a cron job to run a dump at regular intervals so you can
roll back if need be.
