[Koha] How to use Log Viewer search fields

2022-09-27 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Collective Wisdom,

I am trying to find descriptions of how to use the "object:" and "info:" search
fields in the Log Viewer of Koha 21.11.10 because the Koha manual does not
provide any, the wiki does not have an article on the log viewer, and my
institution's internet connection is on the fritz right now, so I cannot access
. Will any of you please provide descriptions or point me to a
resource?

Thank you much,

Re: [Koha] Circulation rule by location

2019-06-26 Thread Christopher Davis

Joel,

I am not sure if it helps, but in the example which you gave, you could
make the archives its own library branch in Koha. You could then apply
different circulation rules in that branch.

For just one example that is likely common, let's a book, or older issues
of a periodical move from the normal part of the library to an "Archives"
location that is more dense, and maybe climate controlled for preservation.
The circulation rules for those items might be different, but the type of
the item hasn't changed, only the location.

Is there a feature request I can vote for or bugzilla # I can track to

[Koha] Help with barcode encoding

2019-04-17 Thread Christopher Davis

Dear Colleagues,

I need help figuring out what barcode encoding to use with Koha when
ordering library cards. Barcode encodings which are available include
Code 39 & Codabar. Is there a specific encoding which Koha requires or
likes. Also, the library card vendor wants to know if a check digit is
required; the check digit signals the barcode reader where the beginning
and end of the content is, correct?

[Koha] Help with SQL report

2019-01-24 Thread Christopher Davis

Greetings Colleagues,

I have been attempting to use the "Biblios with like data in a subfield
of a field" report which is found within the Koha reports library at
https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library#Biblios_with_like_data_in_a_subfield_of_a_field;
however, no matter what values I input into the report dialog boxes, I
still get a long list of my system's complete holdings instead of a much
shorter list of records from a certain vendor. I did notice that I
needed to change the "marcxml" on line four of the SQL code to
"metadata" or else the report failed to run. What am I doing wrong?

I am just trying to get a list of bibliographic records from a certain
vendor so that I can then feed the record numbers into the Batch Record
Deletion tool. Maybe there's a better report to use than this one?

Many thanks,

[Koha] Print patron's fines on their CKO receipt?

2018-10-30 Thread Christopher Davis

Hello All,

I tried to find a way to add a patron's fine to their printed checkout
receipt, but failed to do so. I know that in the notices and slips tool,
I can add tags to the text of the notice to instruct Koha to print
dynamic information such as book titles, barcodes, branch names, etc.,
but will this work for this purpose? Is there a comprehensive list of
these tags which I can consult?

[Koha] Edit language on OPAC login instructions

2018-07-30 Thread Christopher Davis

Dear Collective Wisdom,

On our OPAC when our patrons login with incorrect account numbers and/or
PINs, Koha displays a message indicating to them that their PINs must
contain at least 1 character
(https://basinlibraries.org/cgi-bin/koha/opac-user.pl). I have changed
the system preference minPasswordLength to require at least four
characters; however, the message still tells patrons that their PINs
need at least 1 character- not four. Why?

Also, I would like to change that message to indicate that our patrons'
PINs must contain at least four "numbers" not "characters." How do I do
this?

Re: [Koha] Record not found in "Cataloging search" until after CKI

2017-12-14 Thread Christopher Davis
Katrin,

Thank you...I also think that it is related to indexing. My current theory
is that since these items probably belong to a batch of deleted items which
were restored, that they somehow were not caught by the rebuild/reindex
which was run later that day.

[Koha] Record not found in "Cataloging search" until after CKI

2017-12-14 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

There is some strange behavior in our system which I would not believe
happens had I not witnessed it myself. There are a number of items which,
when the barcode or the ISBN are scanned, fail to show up in a "Cataloging
search" (Koha>Cataloging>"Cataloging search") or a "Search the catalog"
search (Koha>Cataloging>"Search the catalog") until after they are checked
in. After they are checked in, then they show up in search results all the
time.

Why? Is this a indexing problem with Zebra?

[Koha] Export Patrons report has passwords encrypted

2017-11-30 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

My library needs to regularly send to a vendor a list of our patrons'
library card numbers and passwords/PINs so that they can authenticate
patrons. The only way which I have found to do this is to use the "Export
Patrons" report found at <
https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library#Export_patrons>.
Unfortunately, the passwords in the report are encrypted and are not given
in cleartext. I am glad to see that Koha does not just give out passwords
in cleartext, but is there a way to make this work?

Re: [Koha] Multiple record matching rules

2017-09-26 Thread Christopher Davis
Paul,

Thank you for your advice on trying the record matching rules. My
institution actually already employs the record matching rules to match
incoming MARC records on ISBN, but after reading the help file on these
rules, I could not discover how to sequence multiple match points. When I
looked at the rules again, I realized that the way to do what I wanted to
do was staring me in the face. What I needed to use was the "Add match
point" link found on the first match point. SORRY FOR THE FALSE ALARM.

[Koha] Multiple record matching rules

2017-09-25 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

I know that Koha can match the ISBNs of imported MARC records with the
ISBNs of existing records, but is there a way to configure a record
matching rule to try to match more than one match point at a time (for
example try to match ISBN, then try ISSN, then try LCCN, then try OCLC
number, then try standard number, then try publisher number)?

Re: [Koha] Duplicate Biblio Records

2017-07-20 Thread Christopher Davis
Tim,

Regarding you message about what you should do with duplicate bibliographic
records in Koha, as a cataloger myself, I can tell you that not all
bibliographic records are created equal. Many bibliographic records are
missing subject headings (600's, 650's, etc.) and contributor headings
(700's), not to mention that many records do not meet RDA standards.

[Koha] Koha and Dublin Core (and OAI harvesting)

2017-07-20 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

There is a digital repository indexing service named Mountain West Digital
Library (mwdl.org) which uses ExLibris' Primo to OAI harvest the Dublin
Core metadata records of digital artifacts found in digital repositories of
the Intermountain West of the United States. After Primo harvests the
metadata records, it then indexes them, making them searchable and
browseable. I was thinking with Elastic Search, why couldn't Koha replace
expensive Primo at mwdl.org. Maybe that is "comparing apples to oranges"?

I watched Nick Clemens update on Elastic Search in Koha, which he gave at
June's Koha-US meeting (https://youtu.be/hLkVtQ-UHMQ?t=6m4s), but I still
have questions. I would like to know how close Koha is to being able to
perform OAI harvesting of Dublin Core metadata records and then indexing
them the way that Primo does. mwdl.org, and similar institutions, could
then switch to Koha. I imagine that academic libraries, special libraries,
and large public libraries would save a lot of money by switching to Koha
from their expensive discovery layers if Koha, right out of the box, could
harvest and index various metadata schemas from their digital collections
(ebooks, digital photos, audio/video, maps, manuscripts, papers, etc.).

What do you think about this thought? Thanks for reading to the end of my
fantasy.

Kind regards,

Luis,

If your staff need to catalog items without access to the Internet, then
you might consider having them use something like MarcEdit <
http://marcedit.reeset.net/> to create the MARC records, then save the MARC
records until later when they can connect to the Internet again. At that
point in time, they could import the MARC records into Koha.

Thank you for your feedback. At my library, the Koha item type
represents (with one exception) the type of an item- if it's a book,

[Koha] Koha circ & fine rules based on CCODE instead of item type

2017-05-30 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

I thought that I remember someone stating that Koha's circ and fine
rules can be configured using collection codes instead of item types.
Have any of you heard that too? My institution wants to circulate new
videos for one week instead of three, but if we configure the circ and
fine rules using item types, then a patron would not be able to view
all of the DVDs by clicking the "DVD" item type search limiter unless
they also thought to click the "New DVD" item type limiter. It make
more sense to me if the item type reflects the physical manifestation
of the item instead of how an item circulates. I hope that example
made sense.

[Koha] (no subject)

2017-03-21 Thread Christopher Davis
Koha-US is looking for those who could share, with the group, their
knowledge and workflow of the following Koha features:

Inventory
Course reserves
Self registration
Serials vs regular records
Reporting bugs with Bugzilla
How do you make Lists work for you
Acquisitions
Rotating collections

These are just ideas, so if you have another one not listed here, we
welcome it. We are also looking for those interested in joining a
question/answer panel to share their Koha experiences with new Koha
users, and others who would like to help moderate this question/answer
panel. Also needed are people to guide round table discussions.

Sign up or submit your proposals by visiting the conference webpage
found at koha-us.net/index.php/2017_Koha-US_Conference then scroll the
page down until you reach the “Submit proposals...” section. The due
date for submitting proposals has been extended to Wednesday, April

[Koha] Koha-US Conference CFP

2017-03-02 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Koha Users,

Koha-US is calling for proposals for conference talks/presentations, round
table discussions, poster sessions, etc. for its 2017 annual conference
held on August 9-12 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, USA. The theme for this year's
conference is "Koha: You Can Do It" and is in the enabling attitude of
Rosie the Riveter (see attached poster). We are seeking proposals for
diverse audiences, from new Koha users, to the most advanced Koha software
developers. Please check out the proposal submission form found at
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfoq_J7IHoTP-KhdGp3I-FYbi0L44BWMjTIgLZcCZ4XpugRuw/viewform
for more details.

If you are not sure what you could share at this conference, think about
the things you wish someone would have told you about when you were
struggling or maybe think of a lesson you "learned the hard way." Maybe you
could share your experiences integrating Koha into a library program. The
Koha community loves to share and presenting at the conference is a great
way to do just that.

Thank you,

Christopher Davis

Re: [Koha] Messaging Preferences - Help

2016-08-25 Thread Christopher Davis
Satish,

As far as I know, setting the messaging preferences within
Home>Adminstration>Patron categories will only affect patron account
records created *after* the change in the messaging preferences of the
Patron category templates. It is not retro-active; however, I know
that my institution's Koha support vendor, ByWater Solutions, ran a
script on our database which changed the messaging preferences of
every patron record to match the preferences found in Patron category
templates. Does that make sense?

I do not know why your Koha system has not sent welcome email messages
to your batch-loaded patrons. For some reason, the messaging cron
which sends messages and notices does not recognize the batch-loaded
patrons as being in need of welcome messages.

Good luck,

Re: [Koha] Koha for beginners

2016-08-15 Thread Christopher Davis
Mehvish,

Hello and welcome to the Koha Community :-) MARC records are computer
files which represent an item bibliographically (a citation of the
title, author(s), illustrator(s), publisher, subjects/topics, a
summary, etc.) at a title-level (not a record of each individual copy
of a tile). When MARC records are displayed in human-readable format,
one can find at the beginning of each line the identifier (also know
as a MARC tag) of each data field (for example, 040, 100, 245, 300,
etc.), and the letters or numbers preceded by a dollar sign ($a, $c,
$2, etc.) are sub-fields within those data fields. Found between
fields and sub-fields are indicators which instruct the computer
system how to treat the information found within the MARC record. An
example MARC field with sub-fields is 245$a[title] : $b[remainder of
title] / $c[name of author].

Check out loc.gov/marc for a more complete explanation.

[Koha] Average # of guests at KohaCon.

2016-08-09 Thread Christopher Davis
Greetings,

I would like to know the average number of guests who attend KohaCons
around the world. I was told that there were up to 300 guests at the
KohaCon in Greece this year, but I do not know if that number was
exaggerated at all; I think that the number of guests would also
depend on where in the world the KohaCon was hosted.

Re: [Koha] Inventory

2016-06-07 Thread Christopher Davis
Joel,

My institution is currently running an inventory on our collections.
The way we do our inventory is to collect item barcodes, submit them
using the inventory tool found at Koha>Tools>Inventory>Use a barcode
file (the *first* time that you run this tool, you will need to record
the date found within the "Set inventory date to:" field for future
use). You should probably scan the barcodes of your collections when
the library is closed because the "Use a barcode file" tool will
automatically check in/discharge any items which it finds checked out
(which causes a big mess if patrons have items which are no longer
checked out to them). Also, sometimes the "Use a barcode file" tool
will encounter a barcode which did not read correctly or has another
problem with it; the "Use a barcode file" tool will note any such
barcodes it encounters. You can handle those exceptions manually.

Next, add the "Inventory Report" or "Inventory Report by Location" to
your Koha system (found at
<https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library#Inventory_Report>).
When running either inventory report, plug the threshold date into the
report parameters (remember the date I told you to record in the
paragraph above?), and the report will display which items have not
been seen by Koha since the threshold date which you inputted. This
gives you list of items you can then hunt for or weed out of your
collections.

[Koha] ISBN search results

2016-06-02 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

Bear with me, this message is kind of long. I just ran the "List of
all normalized ISBNs" report found at
<https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library#List_of_all_normalized_ISBNs>.
I then took the results of this report to search for the titles to
which the ISBNs belong. When I search for the ISBNs using the ISBN
filter on the the staff interface of Koha as well as the OPAC
interface, Koha could not find most of the ISBNs; however, when I run
a keyword search for the ISBNs, I find many more of them. Why?

My current theory is that the ISBN filter search cannot reconcile the
normalized ISBN which the "List of all normalized ISBNs" report
produces. My theory is more of a "facts which support the theory" kind
of theory, so I could be completely off on it. Your thoughts?

[Koha] Change default text of login field name

2016-02-09 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

I am looking for a way to change the default text of the "login" and
"password" fields on our Koha OPAC webpages (see image found at
<https://goo.gl/photos/9w1hN6tefQrGp1G8A>). Is this done via the
"NoLoginInstructions" system preference or...? The Koha user manual
page found at
<http://manual.koha-community.org/3.18/en/administration.html#nologininstructions>
indicates that this preference will not have the same affect as what I
am looking for, but maybe I am reading it wrong(?).

TIA,

[Koha] Vote on proposed location for Koha-US meeting

2016-02-03 Thread Christopher Davis
Dear Colleagues,

Koha-US (formerly, Koha-NA/NAKUG) has collected proposals for sites to
host its 2016 annual face-to-face meeting. I would like to invite you
to read each site proposal found at
 and then cast your
votes to indicate your preference. Related questions and/or comments
can be submitted to rhastings at nekls dot org. Cannot make it to this
year's meeting? You can still tell Koha-US which site you think is
best for this meeting. We want your feedback :-)
