[Koha] SharePoint Content Search and Koha

2013-01-22 Thread Dianna Roberts
Our company is planning to implement SharePoint at some stage and apparently
its Content Search can include external sources as 'Web Parts' e.g. EBSCOHost
http://support.ebsco.com/eit/sp.php

If you are using SharePoint have you included  Koha  as a searchable site?

[Koha] Dymo LabelWriter

2014-06-19 Thread Dianna Roberts
Hi Katie,

We had been using one until last year when we lost the connection after a
network upgrade and didn't bother to restore it as we're now using the same
printer that does our routing list slips.

Unfortunately I can't remember how we first set it up, whether or it was done
by our own IT staff or in conjunction with Catalyst IT.

But it certainly can be done.

Re: [Koha] Cataloguing Electronic resources

2011-08-31 Thread Dianna Roberts
Hi Ann,

We've not catalogued any websites but for documents we are using a
collection code ED (electronic documents). Our approach is currently a bit
inconsistent when it comes to items as sometimes we've attached them and
sometimes we haven't, although we do also an item-type ED (E-version). When
we have attached an item we've made up the barcode which can be any
combination of letters and/or numbers, e.g. QLDmain0709.

I'll be interested in seeing any other responses to this question, and would
also like to know what people do about link checking. I must admit I hadn't
thought stocktaking as it's not something we've ever been required to do.

We are also currently on 3.2.

Kia ora koutou

I'm wondering how people are cataloguing websites and other electronic
resources so that they are able to be searched by collection codes. I have
trolled the net looking for discussions but have not found anything
pertinent yet. The nub of the problem is that if they don't have attached
items you cannot enter item types and ccodes, however I don't want to assign
barcodes. Are there hidden snags if you have items without barcodes? What
happens at stocktake when you have no actual item to stocktake? Is there a
better way to do this? I have used item types to assign borrower privileges
and ccodes as search points and I am just about to move from 3.2 to 3.4.

[Koha] Items in offsite storage

2011-11-17 Thread Dianna Roberts
If any libraries have documents in offsite storage I'd like to know how you
use Koha to indicate their location at the storage facility, i.e. box number
etc., to identify items for retrieval if and when required.

I'm particularly interested in how to deal with individual issues of
serials. The company I've been talking to add their own barcodes which could
mean having two barcodes per item, ours and theirs.

I tried this, but it does not look as if it takes care of such things as
having a completely different perl location than the default.

If what I did actually worked, there were no localized copies of the
software made but rather just pointers in the httpd configuration which
point back to the source location I downloaded via git. Is that what I
should expect to happen? If so, and I have installed my own perl
(/shared/perl/bin/perl), things are not going to work properly since all of
the source code is hardcoded with /usr/bin/perl.

Or is it my install which did not work properly? I find very few files
copied over; and almost all are in the misc/translator directory.

Thanks,
Tom

Re: [Koha] Edinburgh tourist tax

2012-03-08 Thread Dianna Roberts
Hi MJ,

I believe you are right in correcting me on this one as after further
investigation I see that it is still only a proposal. I had misinterpreted
what the 20% tax was referring to, not realising that it was in fact VAT.

Thanks for the clarification, and the reminder that I should be able to
claim a refund!

Are you sure? A ?2-a-night tax has been suggested but reports say
city governments don't have the legal powers to raise such a tax:
http://www.eturbonews.com/26930/minister-edinburghs-planned-tourist-tax-not-
legal

The current UK rate of Value Added Tax is 20%, which might be what
that was. To individuals, VAT behaves pretty much like a sales tax,
but I believe the law is that you must show tax-included prices to
them - and non-EU visitors can claim a tax refund when you leave.
More on this at http://wikitravel.org/en/United_Kingdom#Shopping
- other than that, VAT is evil because it taxes the poor more than
the rich, but our shiny-faced leader shows no sign of changing it in
the budget later this month, so a tax cut would be a surprise.

If you spot any Edinburgh sites that aren't aimed at business sales
quoting VAT-excluded prices, let us (software.coop) know and we'll
report them to local customer protection agents.

Anyway, if there is now a tourist tax, let me know more and I'll
update our notes, but I'm pretty sure there isn't one yet.

Hope that explains,

This is an inexpensive way of travelling from London to Edinburgh overnight

There is a git repository for the Koha dashboard
http://dashboard.koha-community.org/

That lives at
https://gitorious.org/koha-dashboard

(In the next bit I will be using you a lot, this refers to the
collective you, or y'all :) not Brooke)

If people wanted to extend it, they are more than welcome to work on
it. I'm unlikely to get more free time to work on it in the near
future. These project always run into the problem of not enough hours
in the day. Which leads me to my next point, we need more people to
get involved. Something like the dashboard is great, you won't/can't
break Koha, no one will lose circulation statistics if you make a
mistake. It needs things you might have skills in, design, css, html,
javascript, wordsmithery (i just made that one up). It's a great intro
into getting more involved, then you can move to signing off.

http://blog.bigballofwax.co.nz/2012/07/09/do-some-signoffs-you-know-you-want
-to/

Then let us know how you choose what to sign off.
http://blog.bigballofwax.co.nz/2012/07/10/choosing-something-to-sign-off/

So it can help us encourage others to do some.

You have a distinct advantage with Koha, you can have direct
influence, and a small change you make, say highlighting the needs
signoff section in a way that makes it stand out and thus get more
people looking at it, may get 20 new features into Koha.

Reading back, I sound like a bit of a idealistic/pompous fool, so I
feel like I should end with

"Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my
brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart
of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake
our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day.
An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes
crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that
you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you *stand, Men of the West!*
"

Thus I have
