[Koha] Problem with Zebra Index - Koha v3.08.001

2013-01-03 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi All,
I have a strange problem with the Zebra indexing on my Koha 3.08.001
installation.
When I create Bib records, Koha creates the record fine within the system, and
after saving the record, it is searchable within ten minutes of saving it.
BUT
The problem is
If I search the catalogue via the Staff Client the search will give me results
and I can view the Bib/Item Records.
If I search the OPAC all searches return no results and you cannot view a Bib
record.
But, if you click on the "Most Popular" link in the navigation bar of the OPAC,
it will list Titles and if you click on them it will take you to their Bib
record.
It's a weird problem which has left me surprised and I haven't used Zebra
enough to know how to solve this problem.
Best Regards,
Joel Harbottle

[Koha] Changing OPAC Item Status

[Koha] Cataloguing: Fields not working

2013-05-12 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi All, I have added some extra fields into a couple of our cataloguing MARC
templates which are for local use, but have come across a tiny problem with
them. These fields are set up correctly. But, if you are cataloguing in Koha
using the Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome web browsers it won't
allow you to enter anything in these fields. Then, if you are using the Apple
Safari web browser it will allow you to enter data into these fields. Does
anyone know why this may be happening and possible a fix to it? Best

[Koha] Catalogue Records & Holdings Records Disappearing

2013-05-22 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi All,

I have just come across a strange problem in our catalogue.

I went to add some new holding records to a serial which we are subscribed too,
and unfortunately the bibliographic record, the serial subscription record, and
the holdings records have all disappeared!

I can't even retrieve the records via barcode or bib number.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I have a problem with my authorities: I catalog my book in the framework

 Koha version: 3.02.05.

Another question: is it possible to create, in the field 952 (copy field),

Re: [Koha] Z39.50 Search

2011-05-26 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi Victor,

Normally, in the world of Cataloguing, the letter ³a² is what we call an
³initial article². Initial Articles are usually ignored when you are
searching databases, e.g. Library Catalogues.

In my experience, I have found though that Koha will search initial
article¹s instead of ignoring them, but most z39.50 Server¹s stick to the
rules of Initial Articles are ignored.

Some of the many known Initial Articles for example are:
* a
* and
* of
* the
* to

For example, when you are cataloguing using MARC format, you would indicate
that the title starts with an Initial Article utilising your MARC
Indicators, that way your ILS will ignore the initial article when creating
a list of titles in filing order.

Example title: The brief history of Australia : a study guide for students /
by Joe Bloggs ; edited by John Who.

245 14 $aThe brief history of Australia :$ba study guide for students /$cby
Joe Bloggs ; edited by John Who.

MARC Tag Details:
245 = Title Statement
Indicator 1 = 1 (Added Entry)
Indicator 2 = 4 (Character count of initial article, in the example
title ³The² = 3 characters + space = 4 characters)
Subfield a: Title
Subfield b: Subtitle
Subfield c: Statement of Responsibility

Therefore, with the example, when it is listed in a Shelf List the ILS sees
it as: ³brief history of Australia : a study guide for students² instead of
³The brief history of Australia : a study guide for students², but still
prints the word ³the² in the title on the Shelf List.

I hope that answers your question in some form.

Kindest Regards,
Joel

[Koha] Acquisitions - Vendor Purchases History

I¹m just going through a few invoices but can¹t find a way of searching them

[Koha] Customising the Koha OPAC

2011-08-27 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi All,

I would like to make some changes to my Koha OPAC with how it display¹s
Bibliographic Details on the OPAC Detail¹s page, in three particular areas
of the screen.

1. Title Display

At present, the item¹s Title displays as how it normally displays in the
Koha OPAC. But, I would like to add onto this current display format.

For example, two titles I currently have in the catalogue:

The monster book of manga : girls / edited by Ikari Studio.
MARC Format:245 04 $aThe monster book of manga : $bgirls
/ $cedited by Ikari Studio.
Koha OPAC Display: The monster book of manga : girls /

I would like this to display on the OPAC Detail¹s page as: The
monster book of manga : girls / edited by Ikari Studio.

Printer. Deskjet D2560 [equipment] / Hewlett-Packard.
MARC Format:245 10 $aPrinter. $nDeskjet D2560
$h[equipment] / $cHewlett-Packard.
Koha OPAC Display: Printer.

I would like this to display on the OPAC Detail¹s page as:
Printer. Deskjet D2560 [equipment] / Hewlett-Packard.

2. Publication Details

At present, the Item¹s Publication details show on the OPAC Detail¹s
page as:

Published by : Collins Design, (New York, N.Y. :)

I would like this to display on the OPAC Details page as: - Published by
: New York, N.Y. : Collins Design, 2008.

3. Physical Details

At present, the Koha OPAC will only display the data that is entered in tags
300 $a, $b, $c on the OPAC Detail¹s page, but I would like to extend this
to display the fields 300 $a, $b, $c, $e.

At present details would be listed as per normal, e.g. 64 p. : ill. (some
col.) ; 28 cm., but if there is any data in 300$e (Accompanying material) it
won¹t display in the OPAC display.

I would the 300$e (Accompanying field) to display in the OPAC Detail¹s
display if there is data in the field, e.g.: 64 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 28
cm. + 2 posters.

I have looked through the Koha manuals to see there is any mention of how to
make these changes to the OPAC Details page, but have been unsuccessful on
finding anything.

Does anyone in the Koha community have knowledge on how to make these
changes they would be willing to share with me please?!

Joel

Hi All,
Before upgrading from Koha 2.2.9 on Windows Server 2003 to Koha 3, I set up a
virtual test server of Koha 3 on my Mac with this test install using Zebra.
With Zebra enabled in my test environment, I found that when I added items to
the Bibliographic database, I had to wait a good ten minutes for Zebra to
reindex before that Bibliographic Record/Item Record would appear in the OPAC,
whereas with 'NoZebra' the Bibliographic Record/Item Record appears immediately
in the OPAC once you click 'add' in the Staff Client.
I like to know I have the functionality of when I add in an item to the system,
that it will instantly appear in the OPAC, and not have to wait ten minutes for
Zebra to reindex every time a record is added to the database.
My test environment was on a Intel Core 2 Duo machine with 4GB RAM. I hope that
sheds some further light on my choice of 'NoZebra'.
I'm hoping there is someone out there in the Koha Community whom is able to
help me past this problem I'm having.
Kindest Regards,Joel

It should probably be pointed out that No Zebra code will probably be removed
at some point in the future. So along with the fact that it is deprecated and
unsupported, it is really a dead end road as well.

I should add that collections over 10k, we usually really recommend using Zebra
for indexing.
As a data point for you, I have run a functioning library with 8k or so records
with zebra on a P4 with 1G of RAM. So, zebra isn't *that* big of a hog. You
could do it on very modest hardware.

I suspect that your problem lies in your current NoZebra configuration. I'm not
sure what to tell you to do since you *want* to keep using your NoZebra.
Any thoughts out there?

decided to not utilise Zebra, as our Koha server doesn’t have enough power to
be able to run both Koha and Zebra together.

I hope this helps in some form.

I hope your able to provide me with some insight on how to fix this problem.

Joel,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. I have a few questions, if you don't mind.

What operating system are you running Koha on?

Which minor release of 3.4 (the last digit is important)?

Is this a new install or an upgraded install?

If it is an upgraded install, was the previous install running with the zebra
indexer or with the nozebra preference set?

If it's Zebra, have you done a full reindex?
(/home/koha/kohaclone/misc/migration-tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -v)

Do you get results when you search?

Are you using a translation?

Have you changed or edited your bibliographic frameworks?

The answers to these questions will help us figure out where to begin
suggesting fixes for you.

Thanks!

Hi All,

If I was to turn on Zebra in Koha¹s System Preferences after having and
using the database on ŒNoZebra¹ for so long, would this break the database
or Koha in any form? - Also, by doing this, would this fix the problem that
I have been having?

It should probably be pointed out that No Zebra code will probably be
removed at some point in the future. So along with the fact that it is
deprecated and unsupported, it is really a dead end road as well.

[Koha] Help Please! Problem during upgrade to 3.06.00.001

2011-11-27 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi All,

Please help!

I¹ve just upgraded my virtual box (Koha running on Debian, virtual machine
created by Kyle Hall), and now encounter this error when navigating to the
Staff Client in either Safari or Firefox. How can I overcome this?

Software error:
Can't call method "cookie" on an undefined value at
/home/koha/kohaclone/C4/Templates.pm line 323.
For help, please send mail to the webmaster (webmaster@koha), giving this
error message and the time and date of the error.

How do I go about installing this patch onto my system, I can be a bit
clueless on installing these sorts of things on our Linux installation which

Joel,

First off, I would encourage you to subscribe to koha-devel if you are using
Master. I sent out a warning about this yesterday.

As for applying the patch, the following commands should do it:
sudo apt-get install wget
cd ~/kohaclone
wget -O
bug_6629_followup.patch http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/attachment.
cgi?id=6424
git am -3iu bug_6629_followup.patch
[hit 'y' when asked]

Let me take this moment to reinforce Chris's note about running from Master:
it can be dangerous! If you aren't comfortable working with git, I would
encourage you not to run from Master. Although it is in theory possible for
something like this to happen on a stable branch (e.g., 3.6.x), it's much
less likely to happen. If, for whatever reason, you *have* to use the Master
branch, test the exact version you want to use on a staging server before
applying it to a production server.

And, while I'm on my "teachable moment" soapbox, here's a list of
recommended reading for learning about git. I'd encourage you (and anyone
else who is uncertain) to read at least three of the items on it if you
intend to remain on Master:

Hi Lori,

We use uppercase letters in our barcodes, for example A70022330679B, and
have never had a problem with Koha and these type of Barcodes.

Our patrons records, in their barcode having the leading zeros, for example
008910067. We have also never had a problem with Koha and these Barcodes.

Re: [Koha] Barcodes with leading zeros and spaces

2012-05-24 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi Lori,

Hmmm... That can become a tricky one.

I know on most barcode readers you can set them up so if there is a space in
the barcode as your suggesting, that it will drop the space when it scans
the barcode, so it will read it as P123, etc. for Koha. I use an Opticon
OPR-2001, Cino FuzzyScan F460/F680, and DataLogic scanners and they all have
this option that can be set.

I¹m not sure without looking, but you might also be able to tweak the
settings in Koha to configure it to understand these types of barcodes...

But I would suggest changing the scanner settings is the best way to get
around this problem.

Best Wishes,
Joel

Joel,

I think the problem for this library is that they have a prefix (e.g. p or
sometimes P) and then a space and THEN leading zeros.  So, they want "p
000123" to be interpreted as "P123"

That seems like too much to ask!

[Koha] OPAC Navigation/Browse Buttons

2012-05-26 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi All,

I¹m just wondering if anyone would be able to provide me with instructions
on how to add the OPAC Navigation/Browse buttons into my OPAC. I have
attached a screenshot from another library¹s OPAC of the navigation/browse
buttons I am referring to.

If anyone would help, that would be fantastic. :)

Kindest Regards,
Joel

[Koha] Cataloguing Items with Multiple Parts

2012-07-03 Thread Joel Harbottle
Hi All,

I'm cataloguing an item with multiple books as part of the package.

Ideally, I want to catalogue each individual book in the package and then
link those Bibliographic records to a 'main' Bibliographic record for the
kit/package?

I used to be able to easily do this in our old ILS, but still haven't come
up with a way to achieve this in Koha. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Best Wishes,

Joel
