[Koha] Hazard notice: koha-community.org currently down, due to linode failure

2018-05-01 Thread Liz Rea

Linode says:

An issue affecting the physical host this Linode resides on has
 been detected.

They are working on it and I'm sure hope to have it back soon.

Spare a thought for their engineers, they need your gentle caring and
supportive thoughts.

Cheers,
Liz

And just like that, it's back. :) Possibility for dodginess in the next

[Koha] Help with funding the koha-community.org webserver

2018-06-05 Thread Liz Rea
Hi all,
I've been funding the koha-community web server for about 5 years now, and
I've been happy to have the disposable income available to me to do that
personally. As it turns out, this year I don't really have that and I could
really use some help paying for it.

The server is paid for yearly, this year it was $308 NZD It's all paid up
until June of next year.

If you'd be interested in tossing a few dollars my way to support running
the website, I'd be really grateful. I think it would be better to have a
community funded server anyway. I'm happy to keep looking after the server
and website too.

I don't have a plan currently for how best to receive the funds - ideas
welcome on this front as well.

Thanks for your consideration,

Cheers,
Liz

Re: [Koha] Help with funding the koha-community.org webserver (also short outage for Linode free upgrade!)

2018-06-06 Thread Liz Rea
Further to that, I do mostly keep the work on the website separate from
the work I do for Catalyst. That excepts the occasional urgent apt or
wordpress upgrade that has to happen during working hours, or urgent
help requests from members of the community in relation to working with
the website.

I'll try to figure out a way to make a nice "cost sheet" for the ko-fi,
I've added the most recent invoice from Linode so far. Sorry, I know
PayPal sucks but I like the model for ko-fi better than patreon or
direct transfers - much better for one-offs or little funding drives and
easy to keep transparent. Don't get me wrong, if you want to send a
direct transfer I'll try to facilitate your contribution as best I can. :)

That said, the server is paid for this year, and for next year (and a
little on top)! Well done team (thanks again so very much)! I'll hang on
to the money you've sent and spend it next year when I get the next invoice.

Also a hazard notice: Linode is upgrading your server ('cause hey, you
paid for it!) by migrating it to a new virtualhost with MOAR DISK and
MOAR RAM, they expect a ~20 minute downtime while they do this. That
will happen sometime today, don't panic (rather, let me do the panicking
for you).

Re: [Koha] Plugin Error

2018-06-12 Thread Liz Rea
A few things here:

* do you have the plugin directory defined in koha-conf.xml, a la
/var/lib/koha/instance/plugins

* are the directories listed above owned and grouped into instance-koha
(instance will be the name of your instance)

* are the permissions correct for that directory *and* it's
subdirectories (for plugins, usually 755 is good)

Package installs, except in exceptional and highly non-standard
circumstances, don't use the www-data user. Use the system user
koha-create created for you, as that's what your instance is running
with (you can see the user it's using in
/etc/apache2/sites-available/instance.conf under AssignUserID)

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Liz

Re: [Koha] EDS Plugin not loading

2018-06-12 Thread Liz Rea
I have seen this, make sure you've got all of the apache configs for the
EDS plugin in your /etc/apache2/sites-available/instance.conf. The ones
that you're probably looking for are the ones that let you execcgi on
that plugins directory, something like:

   Alias /plugin/ "/var/lib/koha/instance/plugins/"

  Options ExecCGI
  AddHandler cgi-script .pl
  AllowOverride All
  Require all granted

If you don't have this, the plugin will simply download the .pl over and
over (and you probably won't notice that for at least 30 minutes or so
because of the auto-close of that update-data button).

Cheers,

Liz

I had to do this today, so here's what I did. Instance is the name of
your instance.

sudo koha-shell instance -c

[Koha] Fwd: Doubt on Integration of Extra feature In Koha

Subject: Doubt on Integration of Extra feature In Koha
To: wizzyrea+kc...@gmail.com

Hello Ma'am/Sir,

Can I add Gate Register feature (entry and exit for the daily library
visitor) with RFID card in Koha platform?.

Basically, I am trying to add a feature in which it will hold data (name,
date and time) of daily library visitors. Entry and exit will be recorded
using RFID card.
Is there any built-in feature for RFID card based entry/exit log? Purpose
of this is to do away with manual entry and exit while visiting the
library.

Therefore, I would be very grateful if you could let me know about the
feasibility and approach if I am allowed to edit or modify the koha
platform in such a manner.

Looking forward to your quick response.

Thanking you.

Yours faithfully,

Re: [Koha] Koha Master Password

2018-08-07 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Ashok,

This probably means that the password you have in your mysql server, and
the password in your koha-conf.xml are different. Make sure they are the
same (both username and password) and it should come right.

Cheers,
Liz

Have been in contact with Chad, but haven't heard anything yet. The latest
wordpress upgrade broke both the editor and the permissions plugin we were
using, both seem to be working ok for me after a bit of fixing.

Hi Irène,

There will be more to this error message above that in the output, I
don't think we can help diagnose this without a bit more information,
and more of the error message.

You may be able to see the errors in your /var/log/apt/term.log file
from the last upgrade attempt (or not, it just depends).

Re: [Koha] Many support providers added (Liz Rea)

2015-09-01 Thread Liz Rea
Hi,

You need to follow the instructions on this page:
http://koha-community.org/support/paid-support/how-to-get-listed/

in particular, you are not fulfilling the requirement: "Companies must
show their support of the Koha Community by adding a visible link to the
Koha community website at http://www.koha-community.org to their Koha
offering web page."

While it does not preclude you from inclusion on the paid support
list, it has been consensus in the past to not use
koha.top_level_domain
for business, but redirect that to the official Koha website at
http://koha-community.org. This is just considered being a good
community citizen.

Cheers,
Liz

2015-09-13 Thread Liz Rea
Hi,

This version is very old, and not supported for various reasons (it's
very old, you're running it on Windows, it's very very old).

The Windows install may seem "easy" but I promise you'll have better
results, better support, and better success if you run this on Debian or
Ubuntu. Plus, we'll be able to help you. :)

[Koha] Koha 3.18.11 Released

2015-09-30 Thread Liz Rea
The Koha release team is pleased to announce the release of Koha 3.18.11.
This is a maintenance release, but does contain one security fix. All users
are recommended to upgrade.

You can read the full release notes at
http://koha-community.org/koha-3-18-11-released/

As usual, you can download the tarball from
http://koha-community.org/downloads or wait for the debian packages, which
should be forthcoming in the next day or two.

Cheers,
Liz

Hi Bob,

I was unable to replicate this on 3.18.11. We would need to know more
about your setup to help with this, I think.

One possible thing, would be that perhaps you need to clear your cache
and/or cookies.

Cheers,
Liz

2015-10-06 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Bob,

It's totally that "STRICT_TRANS_TABLES" that's doing this. I just tested
on my MariaDB (same v. as yours) with that and I get the errors too now.

Try this:

SELECT biblio.title, biblio.author, items.itemcallnumber, lcsh FROM

ExtractValue(marcxml,'//datafield[@tag="650"]/subfield[@code>="a"]') AS
lcsh FROM biblioitems) AS subjects JOIN biblio USING(biblionumber) JOIN

Also, since we didn't have a string freeze last month, it's doubly

Hello Liz

I found your email by Github (Koha project). My name is Fabricio and I'm
from Brazil, I am working on the implementation of Koha in my institution
with about 20 libraries, and we are writing some scientific articles (one
of them has been published in a scientific journal here in Brazil ) in one
of the articles that we are writing, we are describing the evolution of
development by assessing the Bugzilla bug reports . Anyway, we have some
questions and we would like to clarify for the completion of our work. Do
you know who can clarify such matters? We look forward to completing our
work and thus disclose the Koha in scientific journals and also in Brazil
(which still does not know the tool) and South America.

I await answers ,

Hi,

I've just done this exact same thing, and I used the patch from 15341
to patch the running system live. It should be fixed in 3.20.08.

Nasty little bug, that.

Re: [Koha] Remove the password option in patron attributes

2016-04-19 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Dianna,

The PIN/Password we are talking about here is separate from the normal
user id and password that you put in when you are registering a
borrower. That user id and password are what allow logins to the public
side of Koha, these extended attribute passwords are different to those,
they are stored in plain text (very bad), and don't have any code behind
them to even be used.

You can confirm whether or not you are trying to use this feature by
going to Administration -> Patron attribute types, and clicking through
each one, verifying that the "Password" box is not checked on any of the
attributes.

If you have no attributes listed here, you are not using this and it
would be safe for us to remove it. :)

I hope this helps, please let us know what you find.

Cheers,
Liz

Re: [Koha] Need help to open a staff patron

2016-06-28 Thread Liz Rea
Hi,

This is because you are using Ubuntu 16.04 with MySQL 5.7 - see bug
https://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=16583 and
other related bugs.

The recommendation is to downgrade MySQL version or use an OS that comes
with any prior version of MySQL until this bug is sorted.

Liz

Hi Kate,

It would be a really cool feature, for sure, but sadly there isn't a way
to import label templates.

If you file a bug at https://bugs.koha-community.org asking for it, it
could become reality. Even better if you toss a few bucks towards a
developer to make it happen!

Hi Joel,

Also, do you happen to have more than one field mapped to biblio.title
in your framework?

Cheers,

Re: [Koha] Superscript?

2016-09-26 Thread Liz Rea
You can also try using the Windows (or Mac) character map to copy/paste
the superscript:

Windows 10:
http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/6-ways-to-access-character-map-in-windows-10.html

MacOS (various): http://symbolcodes.tlt.psu.edu/keyboards/charpalosx.html

Apologies if you already thought to do this and just want to type it in.
This is the "easiest" way I know of.

Re: [Koha] Regarding updating Patron messaging preferences

2016-11-23 Thread Liz Rea
Hi,

There is a script to do this in the Koha package, in
misc/maintenance/borrowers-force-messaging-defaults

To use it, you would set your borrower categories up the way you want in
terms of messaging, and this script will update all borrowers based on
their category default.

Bear in mind, if you have had the enhanced messaging preferences on
previously, and borrowers have updated their own settings, using this
tool will wipe out their settings and replace them with the new default.
This could make users angry.

I hope this helps,

Liz Rea

Hi Michael,

Please file a bug under "Koha -> Website" on bugs.koha-community.org and
we'll get this looked into. I see what you are talking about and it does
in fact seem wrong. Nothing on the page itself has changed recently, so
it must be that stuff has moved around on the target server and no one
let us know.

Re: [Koha] Number of Koha Libraries in the Word

2016-12-12 Thread Liz Rea
Hi,

I'd really like to see Hea improved, and link to that instead. It is our
own, open, data. It is fully voluntary. We can make the registration
process easier for libraries - possibly as part of the installer. It is too
hidden now.

An API to Hea that I could pull from to use the data on the website would
be a nice thing, but not a requirement. I'm happy to simply link to it.

We have this tool, we should encourage more strongly the use of it, instead
of depending on a third party with non-open data.

Second this, terrifying as it is. Drop the database and reload the
backup. It has to do with the way mysqldump exports the data,
alphabetically and without regard to foreign key dependencies.

Re: [Koha] Koha 16.05 - Holds Script - Run Frequency

2017-01-25 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Craig,
The cron job is run from files are in /etc/cron.hourly/koha-common for a
package install.

Note that "build_holds_queue.pl" doesn't affect the holds to pull. It
only affects the hold queue.

To change the frequency, you could comment out the job in
/etc/cron.hourly/koha-common, adding an octothorpe at the beginning of
the job like

# koha-foreach --enabled
/usr/share/koha/bin/cronjobs/holds/build_holds_queue.pl

and then create one in the /etc/cron.d/koha-common like

*/15 * * * * koha-foreach --enabled
/usr/share/koha/bin/cronjobs/holds/build_holds_queue.pl

very much like the process_message_queue.pl entry. This will run the job
every 15 minutes, at 00, 15, 30, and 45. To change the interval, swap
out the the 15 in */15 for your desired interval.

On a recent debian(8)/ubuntu(16), you can check the cron log super
easily with sudo systemctl status cron

I hope this helps!

Cheers,
Liz

Re: [Koha] Koha 16.05 - Holds Script - Run Frequency

2017-01-25 Thread Liz Rea
A common thing on the holds-to-pull list is that the default limit for
holds to show on holds-to-pull is 2 days, you might consider upping the
default limit in the system preferences, or adding a filter that is
further back, which might catch a bunch of things you didn't know were
there!

Liz

Re: [Koha] Koha Plugin System

2017-02-07 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Bob,

Probably you have a compile error in your plugin, see bug
https://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=17461. It
turns out that if the plugin has some kind of syntax error, the plugin
entry won't turn up in the intranet, *and* won't give any errors either!

I'm going to take a guess that you have a use C4::Branches in your
plugin, as that seems quite common a thing for plugins to choke on since
all of the branches stuff was moved to Koha::Libraries in a recent version.

You could also try applying or editing your code to use the patch off of
the above bug, and see if you get more useful diagnostic information.

Sincerely,
Liz, who just spent much too long figuring out what the heck was going
on and now has a bruised forehead from banging her head on the wall.

This sounds to me like you have specified the MARC flavour for the
zTarget incorrectly, perhaps it is set to UNIMARC instead of MARC21, or
vice versa?

1. What exactly did you enter in menu "Koha administration >

2. Have you been able to connect to the entered Z39.50 server using

If you can't connect to the Z39.50 server reinstalling everything from

Re: [Koha] SQL query to enable all patrons messaging preferences

2017-02-28 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Vimal,

There is a script provided in Koha to do this, on the packages it will
be at /usr/share/koha/bin/maintenance/borrowers-force-messaging-defaults

To use it, set the defaults for each category within the Patron
categories editor in the Koha administration, then use this script to
apply those defaults to all borrowers. Be aware that if you have
borrowers that have personally set these settings already, using the
tool to force defaults will override their preferences. This can lead to
angry borrowers.

I hope this helps,

Cheers,

Re: [Koha] Exporting batchs in card creator

2017-02-28 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Tony,

In your batch, do you have titles that have macrons or other special
characters in them? In older versions of Koha I recall there might have
been a problem with special characters in the label creator.

If you do have titles with special characters, removing them from the
batch might solve the immediate problem of the batch not printing. You
might have to do the labels with special characters manually.

Cheers,
Liz

Re: [Koha] How disable sending email

2017-04-05 Thread Liz Rea
If you installed with packages, you can run

sudo koha-email-disable instancename

where instancename is the name of your instance. This will disable all
emails, including things like hold notices and all of the enhanced notices.

Re: [Koha] Koha circ & fine rules based on CCODE instead of item type

2017-05-31 Thread Liz Rea
You can add a tab to the search page to limit by collection code as well
as by itype, and change the order of them so that say, ccode comes
first. It's in the system preferences.

I don't know if that knowledge helps you really, but thought I'd point
it out.

 * Type, *print.alway**s* in Filter.
 * Look for *print.always_print_silent*.
 * Double-click the value to change it to false.

no longer enables silent printing?

Re: [Koha] Allowing patrons to set their passwords during self-registration

2017-12-19 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Arturo,

While I haven't tested your scenario precisely, it's possible that the
reason that you are having problems here is that we don't want to set a
password before the account has been confirmed via email. A possible
shortcoming of the feature is that it doesn't take this into account
(but haven't tested it so don't take that as absolute truth).

Regarding the emails, you can see the registration emails and links by
putting this report into your saved sql reports:

select to_address, content, time_queued from message_queue where
date(time_queued) = CURDATE();

Then copy/paste the link from the content into your browser.

The sandboxes don't send mail for a very good reason, to keep spammers
from using them for evil.

Good luck, happy testing,

Liz

ps with apologies to Arturo, I didn't send this to the list and I should
have, so sending it again.

Re: [Koha] Koha 17.11.01 released

2018-01-04 Thread Liz Rea
Hi Bruce,

If you are really on Debian Squeeze (6.0), that's super old Debian and
Koha 17.11 won't work with that - as you noticed some of the
dependencies aren't there for that old a version of Debian.

This upgrade will be a slightly bigger project for you, as you'll need
to upgrade your OS before you can upgrade Koha. You should probably do
that anyway, sooner rather than later. Debian is now up to version 9,
code name Stretch.

Cheers,

Hi Clint,

Did the instance koha_instance exist before you tried to restore the
database? i.e. did you koha-create instance before or after you restored
the database?

Is the instance name the same between your dumped database and the new
instance? If not, they probably should be. If you can't do that for some
reason, you'll need to unzip and edit the database dump to include the
new db name, it'll look something like:

--
-- Current Database: `koha_instance`
--

CREATE DATABASE /*!32312 IF NOT EXISTS*/ `koha_instance` /*!40100
DEFAULT CHARACTER SET latin1 */;

USE `koha_instance`;

if "instance" there doesn't match the name of your new db/instance,
you'll need to edit the dump to change it to match up, if that makes sense.

I'm making a grand assumption that you know that most Koha instances
aren't named instance, they can be named whatever you want and that
there's nothing magic about "instance" as a name when you've done
koha-create, or koha_instance as the database name. All that needs to
happen is that the koha-create and koha_ should
match up. Then everything should work. And that the should
exist before you try to import the database.

If koha-restore doesn't work after you've unzipped and edited the dump
file, you can do (I'm assuming you'll have only one dump file in the
current directory - if you have more than one specify the full filename!)

cat instance-*.sql | sudo koha-mysql instance

and that will import the edited database into the instance's database.

Cheers,
Liz

Whoa, that's a pretty big bug and I don't see anything like it in bugzilla.
Since you know more about it would you mind filing one for that at

Re: [Koha] Problem circulation records

2011-04-01 Thread Liz Rea
I just tested this in (something very close to) current master. The issue you
describe here is no longer an issue in koha. Which version are you running?

One caveat to that statement, as bug 3597 states, it still doesn't check for
transit or waiting status for reserves. This screencap confirms that on issue
items are not deleted, but that waiting and transit status items are deleted:
http://screencast.com/t/Lh5vwCxetec

I've updated the original bug to reflect this discovery. Thanks for bringing it
up so that we could double check it!

2011-04-13 Thread Liz Rea
Linda,
This configuration information may help you, it is what we do to configure our
receipt printers to print automatically.

http://www.nexpresslibrary.org/go-live/configure-your-receipt-printers/

You can also do this with a version of portable firefox, used only for Koha,
that has the receipt printer configurations built in. I'm happy to provide
direction in how to get that working as well (there are a few tricks to it).

I also added one more bit of information regarding better use of Firefox as a
Koha client:

http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Using_Portable_Firefox_as_a_Koha_Client

This way you can have a version of firefox with a restricted printer, and a
version that can print to any printer.

In 3.2 the parameters are defined like this:

<>

So instead of: '__BRANCHCODE__'

Use the <> and it should work. :)

Re: [Koha] Issues with superlibrarian

2011-04-20 Thread Liz Rea
Zachary,
Probably what you want to do is create another patron/staff user, and give that
user Superlibrarian privileges. You can then assign a "home library" to that
user, log in as that user, and the dropdowns will be populated correctly.

I'm making an assumption here: that you are logging in as the koha user that
you use to update your database (go through the web installer). That user is
supposed to be used ONLY for that function, and not for everyday cataloging
functions.

Any account can be given superlibrarian privileges, and any other account
besides the original superlibrarian can be assigned a home branch.

I hope this helps, please let us know if you change your user and you're still
having trouble.

Re: [Koha] Problem Setting the Renewal Field on Item Types

2011-04-20 Thread Liz Rea
I believe a recent change to Koha moved the renewals out of the item type
definition, and into the circulation rules. The rules for renewals by item type
are now located in the circulation rules (where they properly belong, imo) and
can be edited through that interface.

This tripped us up on a recent upgrade as well, so you're not alone. :)

You didn't say which version you were running, so I can't be totally sure about
this. If this seems wrong, holler back and we'll try to troubleshoot more.

Re: [Koha] reports function

2011-04-25 Thread Liz Rea
For the 1st, a CSV/tab delimited file is viewable in any text editor or
spreadsheet program. I really like using Libre Office
(http://www.libreoffice.org) for that as it's pretty smart about dealing with
CSV and Tab delimited files. You can use MS Excel if you File -> Open the file,
but it's not quite as slick as LO.

As for your 2nd question, I believe you have your parameter set up incorrectly.
Try this:

> SELECT
> sum(items.barcode),sum(biblio.title),sum(biblio.author),sum(biblio.datecreated),
> items.barcode,biblio.title,biblio.author,biblio.datecreated FROM items

You were missing an 's' on your itemtypes parameter declaration. :)

Re: [Koha] Font changes on receipts

2011-04-27 Thread Liz Rea
Lesley,

Congratulations on your go live! I hope things are going well! :)

As to your question, yes, it is possible to use the intranetuserjs preference
to edit the CSS for the receipts. Here's a snippet of what I have in ours:

There is a lot more you could do to the fonts/receipts, a decent primer on
font styling in CSS is available here:
http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_font.asp. If you are using Koha 3.4, there is
actually an IntranetUserCSS preference now that you can use to avoid the
necessity of using to start your style block in intranetuserjs. In
that case, I believe you'd just need the bit:

> #receipt {
> font: 15px, arial, sans-serif; /*editing to your whim, of course*/
> }

to style your receipt fonts.

You'll probably want to get rid of my comments in the code, so copy/paste the
following:
