Re: [Koha] Best way to install koha in ubuntu 12.04?
I have tried both methods as suggested on http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_Ubuntu. My first installation was from source. It didn't work so I removed it and tried packages. I have tried 3.8, 3.10 and 3.11, and I have followed the instructions. Nothing really worked. At one time an installation seemed OK, but I couldn't search and find the books in my library, and since then, nothing has worked. Could it be that there are to many config-files over the place, that are not removed, when I uninstall koha? -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Best-way-to-install-koha-in-ubuntu-12-04-tp5743104p5743114.html Sent from the Koha-general mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha
Re: [Koha] Best way to install koha in ubuntu 12.04?
David, I can't help you with the install (last time I did an Ubuntu install was on LTS 10.04 about 2 years ago) ... but maybe if you share more specifics about what isn't working, what error message(s) you get, or what specific step seems to where the install grinds to a halt ... maybe then other much more able helpers could figure out what to suggest. Re: [Koha] Best way to install koha in ubuntu 12.04?
Strangely enough, It's hard to describe it better. 1) I tried to install from source. I followed all instructions, but couldn't get the web-installer working. So I uninstalled koha again. 2) I tried installing koha-common from packages using of the guides. I couldn't get an instance working. Again I uninstalled. 3) I tried installing koha. Now the web-installer worked. I created a library, a patron with superprivilliges, catalogued books and so on. Everything seemed to work, but - there were no books, when I searched for them! After two days of trial'n error, and asking around, I uninstalled again. 4) Since then I have tried to install and uninstall 4-6 times. There are no error-messages when I do so, but I haven't seen the web-installer since. I have - in despair - manually deleted all files and directories I could find, that were called 'koha', but no luck what so ever... I have installed and uninstalled twice today. No error messages. I even tried to uninstall apache and mysql, and installing them again. Nothing works I consider spending the weekend on making a clean server install, but if someone had better ideas, I am all ears! -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Best-way-to-install-koha-in-ubuntu-12-04-tp5743104p5743132.html Sent from the Koha-general mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha

2) I tried installing koha-common from packages using of the guides. I couldn't get an instance working. Again I uninstalled. Couldn't get an instance working is very vague. It would have been good to ask questions on the mailing list or on IRC at this stage of the game. Everything seemed to work, but - there were no books, when I searched for them! This is a very common installation problem. There's even a FAQ entry for it: http://koha-community.org/documentation/faq/#qa-faq24 I'm not sure what kind of cleanup you might need to do at this point but it's worth reiterating that the packages are the best way to install Koha. -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha
Re: [Koha] Best way to install koha in ubuntu 12.04?
Greetings, Packages are the best way to go: http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_ubuntu_-_packages You have three hurdles to jump when doing the installation, four if you count installation of Ubuntu. 1) Editing files. People new to Linux aren't familiar with how to edit files. 2) Apache configuration. Koha can install either in a named hosts way or a non-named hosts way. If you got the OPAC client when you thought you were supposed to get the staff client, the symptom is based on Apache's handling of a non-Apache configuration issue. There are some simple things the #koha IRC channel (http://koha-community.org/support/ scroll down to the IRC chat area and click here) can help with. 3) Zebra configuration. Packages generally have it working so you just have to wait a while and the entries should show up -- if you wait an hour and nothing shows up, then there is a problem. However, people on the IRC channel can help you with if you don't try to solve your problems first (fresh clean installs are easier to debug). In short, chat with the #koha IRC channel (http://koha-community.org/support/ scroll down to the IRC chat area and click here) during installation, and then perhaps near the end of the install have your system administrator/network administrator handy. :) GPML, Mark Tompsett ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha
Re: [Koha] Best way to install koha in ubuntu 12.04?
Couldn't get an instance working is very vague I couldn't get it working, because I followed the instuctions, and when I was supposed to finish installation via the web-installer, there was none. There were no error messages, or anything else, that indicated that something was wrong, so I call it instance not working -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Best-way-to-install-koha-in-ubuntu-12-04-tp5743104p5743140.html Sent from the Koha-general mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Koha mailing list http://koha-community.org Koha@lists.katipo.co.nz http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha

I give up! Apache has stopped working. I must have removed some needed file, at a point. /usr/sbin/apache2ctl -S gives no output since apache2ctl doesn't exist... I don't know why. Probably my fault.
