Personally, I have a non-Koha loan that was due back on February 15th, but today on February 11th I got an email saying that my loan had been automatically renewed until sometime in March. That's a reasonable way of expecting automatic renewals to work I think. That it wouldn't try the automatic renewal until the soonest renew date.
