KR> wire sizes

2008-10-15 Thread Mark Langford
Somebody asked about wire sizes the other day. The chart I used to determine
mine is at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/wiresize.html . I think this same
chart is also in the Bengelis books, which you should also own if you're
building an airplane. EAA sells the full set for a reasonable price.

KR> / 0-200 starter

2008-10-15 Thread Larry&Sallie Flesner

Dan and other 0-200 pull starter users,

Make sure the starter switch is adjusted properly and that
you are getting full engagement of the starter gears. Mine
was not set up properly when I got the engine and in mere
moments I had ruined some $400 gears in the accessory
case. Fortunately, a friend in the EAA chapter had the
gears and let me have them at a reasonable price.

There is a setup procedure for the starter on the web or
in the overhaul manual, I don't remember which. You want
the gear teeth engaged before the switch makes contact.
I used my own procedure that I won't go into for liability
reasons. :-)

I forgot to add " don't be wimpy on the pull". Give it a good solid
tug to full engage the teeth. Don't give it a "slow" pull or you could
be looking for new gears if the setup is not right.

Excellent idea. Originally, I co-located the ELT with the antenna to keep the
coax short and make for a unitized installation, but relocating the ELT to the
side makes perfect sense. I'll do that; thanks for the idea. Sometimes you
look at a problem too closely for too long and you miss the most obvious
solution. Oscar Zuniga

KR> / 0-200 starter

2008-10-15 Thread Myron (Dan) Freeman
Hi Guys and Girls;

I have thoroughly inspected the starter engagement mechanism and checked it
against the Continental manual and I am confident that it is properly
adjusted.

It fully engages the starter gears before the electrical contacts close and
they most definitely do close and there is plenty of over travel available
beyond that for the contact switch but there is a very considerable amount
of spring pressure to overcome which I cannot and should not change in the
mechanism itself.

Now it could be that there is a lot of mechanical drag in the pull cable
itself when pressure is applied during the pull and that might be helped by
the careful application of the proper lubricant (oil). I did not pull the
cover off of the header tank yet which is what I'll have to do to lubricate
the cable and like Larry said there may be far more cable twisted around in
the header tank area than is necessary, so I'll have to check that out yet
and let you know what I find.

Have a great week everybody.

OK, I checked and lubed the cable from end to end and I checked the routing.
It goes from the top center of the panel down to the left side and under the
header tank along the top longeron and out the firewall then up to the top
right side where it connects to the starter. There is no way to run it
straight up over the header tank because there simply is no room to do it
without a major modification to the tank.

I did not try to crank it over because it's still in the trailer and I'm by
myself and I didn't want to chance damaging something. But I did try pulling
on the T-handle and it seemed easier but without a scale or something to
gauge it by I'm just guessing.

So that's the end of it for now, have a great week.

help
the movement as much as I can. So, Thank you Bruce, you have helped me

PS, Here's another one about half way down the page #124. Might be a good
