Dan said, > "I am convinced that EMPI is the reason that I have junked 2 sets of heads." Well I am convinced that you just enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together again. Re the EMPI heads, there are EMPI heads and other EMPI heads. Mine are EMPI, with the larger valves, but this version also has more mass - it weighs a couple pounds more than standard EMPI heads. I would work with Steve on getting the right heads for the 2180 as he clearly knows all about the different heads and which ones are appropriate to get the kind of longevity I'm experiencing. ** Interesting piece in the current "The Experimenter" on high-time experimentals. Mike Melville's Long-EZ has 4200 hours, built in 1980. Dick Rutan has one with even more hours, but it's retired. It is called "Old Blue." There's an RV-6 with 3000. It was a long trip a year and a little ago. AZ to WI for Oshkosh, then to MI over the big lake. Then to IN to see Bob G. Mt Vernon for fuel and home. Well one day later home. I cracked the case on the 2387 VW. That has been rebuilt and I have a new cowl. All CARBON. I still need to pull a mold from the bottom and redo again but it will do for now. I got it fired up tonight, thank you net for the instructions. I ran it for about an hour, and all temps ollked real good. Copperstate flyin started today, and I wanted to get the plane down there for Fri and Sat. It is a 15 minute flight so what the heck lets do the testing on the way down. It appears that there will be about 15 people over to the house on Fri night for a cook out and Root Beer. My little KR Gathering on the WEST SIDE. more later and I will have photos. Lee Van Dyke.

I'd put all of the foam on the stub wing (that wasn't a choice, was it?) and glass it into the stub wing skin. If you put all the foam on root of the wing side, when you lean them up against the wall your foam and glass will get smooshed (tech term there). And I'd make them meet together perfectly so that all that was needed to fill the gap would be 3/4" white electrical tape. That's an "upgrade" I'd like to do to mine next time the wings come off (that's been a few years already). I had the same question when I did mine, but didn't have the good sense to ask that question when I was building mine... Mark Langford N56ML "at" hiwaay.net website at http://www.N56ML.com

Hey Guys, I've got a little question. I will be glassing the stub wings this weekend and I was wondering if the area between the stub and the wing template gets the same amount of foam to fill in the gap or can I put all the gap filling foam on the wing ? Which is the easier way. I do plan on using the wrap to seal it when all is said and done. Mike Sylvester kr2s builder Birmingham,AL. Cell no.205-966-3854 _ Windows 7: Simplify your PC. Roy is going to have my new Vair with the front bearing, at the CC next month, for a run on the test stand. But, I will have to drive this toy around for a while longer, till I can get that new engine in her. Can I be in the click, then? Hey guys, my toy now has wheel pants, well at least in the Cleco version. I will have pics on the site soon. I just have to get some rivets and blind nuts to finish it off. Once I decided that the pants I was trying to install were not going to work, to my satisfaction, I tried two other sets and the ones off the Black Bird, fit perfectly. Then I used the Dan Diehl leg to pant fairing, and the rest was a breeze. I have messed around with this for many hours, and with some good advice from Dan, they were all fitted within 3 hours, using NO brackets. However, I may still put one on for peace of mind, but Dan said that he flew his for years with no brackets. [Bulk] KR> WV engine choice
Gunnar, You can't go wrong with the Great Planes 2180 VW from Steve Bennett. I have 210 hours on mine since new and still no problems to date that I can attribute to the engine quality. One thing to consider is that the KR2S needs 180- 200Lbs up front to balance properly with the longer tail ( 14 inches) so going with too light an engine will restrict your useful load due to CG limitations ( max 30% MAC recommended). If you want to fly 2 people, you need the horsepower and the CG position to do it. Seems the 2S length was meant for the 0200 Continental and lately the Corvair crowd as they are heavier than the VW. I have full electric system, 30A Walmart battery and dual ignition and still needed a 2 inch spacer on my 9 1/2 inch engine mount to get the CG where it should be with the 2180VW. Chris Gardiner KR2S C-GKRZ 210 hours If anyone could share some information and experiences, it would be highly appreciated Thanks ! I am convinced that EMPI is the reason that I have junked 2 sets of heads. The ones that I put on, on this last re-build, are genuine VW. Well, as genuine as you can get these days. I think the EMPI are OK, on the heads with the stock size valves, but are not, on the 2180 with the oversize valves. Ron, Hundreds of KR's have been completed with virtually no "factory" support at all. It's one of the reasons KRnet exists. For the most part, WE are the "factory" support, since we are the closest thing you'll come to a KR "factory". Steve is doing a lot towards getting all the fragmented resources that there are out there for KR parts and accessories together but when you come right down to it, you CAN indeed build an entire flying KR with zero pre constructed parts. It's one of the very few completely scratch buildable aircraft there is. Cheers.
