Aviation is an amazing world. Put you tube in and air it up then take the
core out and slip the half on , if you use a little powder seems to work
almost all the time. A point for an AP. la...@lebanair.com

I got my new bearings today, and putting them in was fairly easy. At first
they did not fit the axle, even they measured as though they should. A
little buffing with some 220 solved that problem.

However, I tried the Clorox bottle and the light cardboard and neither would
work. In fact, I still ended up pinching a hole in the tube. So I have 3
tubes left and if I go through those, I will have to go to some different
wheels. This is insane. Why would anyone ever design a wheel like this, to
go on an airplane, setting everyone up for failure from the start. I am up
to four tubes shot, now.

I should be flying, instead, I am screwing around with something that should
be a no-brainer task.

KR> Scary?

2010-04-16 Thread Larry Knox
Thanks Dan, I have one of those . They are on Cleveland's but do the same
thing. I guess I'll pull mine down and check them. I would have had my
Corvair started today but after a problem with the starter not engaging the
ring gear deep enough then today there is a wiring unknown that we haven't
ran down. We have her loaded and she will go down Tue to our Business Expo
in Town. We have two spaces there free as we are willing to bring 2 planes
down and set them on both sides of the entry to the expo building. We will
take our 150 trainer and our Corvair KR2S this year to show the ways you can
get into Aviation. We had over 2000 people last year and looking for almost
double that this year. Great fun. la...@lebanair.com

2010-04-16 Thread Ronald Wright
How could you pinch a hole in the tube with the plastic insert installed??
Would love to see some pictures and how you managed to do it.. My next
question is why wouldn't it work?? I've used the method for years with no
issues and no holes. Simple to install and slightly inflate the tube.
Inquiring minds need to know what you did or didn't do..

KR> Fw: First Flight - N774A

2010-04-16 Thread Mark Langford
From: Brad Ankerstar
To: KRnet
Sent: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 10:12 PM
Subject: First Flight - N774A

Today was not supposed to be the day, but it was. N774A inadvertently left
the ground at Butler County Regional (HAO), Ohio. Wind was 5-7 knots right
down runway 11. After a brief attempt to put it back down, it became
apparent that was not a good idea. I made one wobbly pass around the
pattern and set up an approach, but I thought I was too fast, so I just
continued my low pass and returned to pattern altitude. I was going to take
another shot at it but my KR pilot on the ground suggested I get some
altitude, above the airport and feel it out a little. So I went up to
2500-3000 and orbited the runway for about 40 minutes.
I didn?t really have that Yeeaaahhh moment but I could see the
potential. Upon reflection, it was pretty exciting. I was way out of my
comfort zone on this unplanned adventure so I didn?t really enjoy it as much
as I should, after 35 years of working and dreaming. The guys on the ground
said it looked like it flew great and sounded awesome. I was glad to hear
that, but after the landing, it may be irrelevant. The landing was
marginally successful. I was able to climb out and walk away. N774A will
need new shoes, among other things. The standard retracts will probably be
replaced with training wheels, provided a close inspection doesn?t find some
serious damage that is not visible now.
Once I get it off the trailer and on a couple saw horses I can find out how
bad it is. We had it off the runway and back in the hangar in less than 30
minutes. EAA guys are great! Then I got to spend a couple hours with some
nice State Troopers and folks from the FAA. The young man working at the
airport is the son of the FAA safety inspector who checked out the ?hard
landing/crash?.
Assuming I don?t find additional serious damage, I will probably be in the
market for a set of Diehl tricycle gear or maybe a project with that gear
set up.

KR> Pants

2010-04-16 Thread Dave Dunwoodie
Hello all;

I am toying with the notion of adding some pants to my KR2. I found a
couple of offerings, one at $120, the other at $250. Neither of them
gave me a clear, concise idea of what would be involved in the fitting,
etc. And neither offered a direct shot of what I would be buying.

My KR2 has spring gear for grass strips, I think everything is
'standard' but I don't know for sure. It drags its tail.

Can anyone offer some places to find some pants for my baby?

Thanks!

Dave.

KR> Wheel woes

2010-04-16 Thread Pete
Dan,
I do this kind of thing almost every day. What I do for wheels like this
is put just enough air in the tube to inflate it without pushing the
tyre out, so the inside of the tube is pretty well flush with or just
inside the bead of the tyre. I use plenty of lube (We use a special tyre
& tube lubricating compound, but soap flakes dissolved in water to a
creamy consistency will do fine) on the rim halves and I put the two
halves together. The tube should slide over the lube without pinching.
once the halves are together, I fully inflate the tyre, deflate it
fully, then re inflate it up to pressure. This seats the tube correctly
inside the case.
Hope this helps.
Pete.

It?s my opinion that all people with ?special knowledge?
have a responsibility to teach. On KR

from every posting, but I especially

I guarantee, many many of my questions have been answered on KRnet. It?s a

KR> Annual Inspections I found this valuable

2010-04-16 Thread Jeff York
Below is a copy of a response to a person on the Dragonfly lists request for
help with an annual inspections. It came from onesky...@aol.com

I found this reply very helpful and interesting and near the bottom is a link
for an FAA powerpoint on the subject.

I thought this was of great value and thought I would pass it along to the KR
group.

Jeff York

Are you asking for an annual when you talk to them?

The requirement is for a condition inspection. The plane should be
constructed in accordance with AC 43.13-1b ACCEPTABLE METHODS, TECHNIQUES, AND
PRACTICES?AIRCRAFT INSPECTION AND REPAIR

You should have a inspection checklist modified from AC 90-89 A Appendix 1.
This list is just like the one I use for my Cessna it is the same concept
and my A&P follows and checks the list to see that things are in good
condition and checks it off. When I call for an owner assisted annual for my
Cessna I talk to the A&P tell him I have the list I will remove all of the
covers, I will do the compression check, I will take out the interior, etc. He
comes out and looks at all the critical inspection items that I have
already looked at and serviced and if it meets the requirements he signs it off.

My last flying Dragonfly I owned I did not hold the repair certificate and
my co-builder moved away. It was cheaper to hire an A&P to do the
condition insprection.

I used the same approach as with the certificated Cessna. I modified the
checklist referenced above, printed out AC 43 to have on hand as my
maintenance reference, inspected the airplane per the check list had it all
opened
up with a compression gauge on hand, and met the A&P at my hanger. He
reviewed my records looked in the plane for loose nuts, wires, no threads
showing, unsecured wiring cables etc. The plane had flown safely the last
logged
flight

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/field_offices/fsdo/orl/local_more/media/ppt/exper-ia.ppt

I found this power point it explains a lot show this to your A&P and have
your part done.

KR> Scary?

I for one would be greatful if you, the gentleman that built the tire press and
Mark Langford (formerly famous for flat tires) would put on a demonstrationn of
your findings and fixes for the rest of us at the next KR gathering.

I hear so many interesting things here on the KRnet and feel it would be so
valuable to many of us to see a table of displays on some of these subjects as
well as a few hands on seminars at the gathering. Maybe a an hour or two of 10
to 15 minute demos of things like tires and flats, trim motors, canopy ideas,
How I made this work and how I made that work.

If I think for a minute and go through the last month or twos emails, I am sure
it would bring to mind a whole list of subjects that I think a lot of us would
enjoy seeing demonstrations of at the next gathering.
