KR> New tires

2010-08-10 Thread laser...@juno.com
I just put my new Nanco 4-ply tires on today. Just for fun I went
through my logbook and counted the landings on the old tires - Cheng Shin
2-plys. Tread is the same on both - sawtooth. I have 189 landings on
the old tires and they were good for some more but cord was showing on
the right tire - the one that wears the most due to the tremendous torque
of my GP 2180. Anybody else notice with their left-turning engine (from
the cockpit) that their right tires wear faster? These are nice looking
tires and cost $11.99 each. Tubes were $6, although I didn't use them.
The old ones were fine. I ordered the Nancos from GEARWORKSMFG.COM, in
case anyone is interested. I'd never heard of Nanco tires but they are
well known for making trailer tires. Desser no longer carries the Cheng
Shin 4.10/3.50-5 tires or I wouldn't have went looking and found this
place. As I recall the Cheng Shins from Desser were $17 each with free
shipping, so these were cheaper even with shipping - which was $11 UPS
for two tires and two tubes. No tax.

With the Cheng Shins that works out to 18 cents per landing. If I get
189 landings on the Nanco tires they will have cost 13 cents per landing.

KR> Wing in surgery

2010-08-10 Thread Dan Heath
Yesterday I got the top on the other tank and today, I began the surgery on
the right wing. I chose this wing to start with because I knew that it had
a glass tank built in and knew that it would be the most difficult of the
two. A fellow builder and friend from the Orangeburg area, suggested that I
might be able to insert the tanks in from the stub end. It looks like that
might be possible. Thanks, John.

Yes, and confirmed, that is still a beautiful RV and worth more due to a zero
time prop and recently inspected engine.

When does the back end of this thing get going?Â

Paul OReilly

+++
At Oshkosh this year I watched a beautiful RV-8 taxi off R36 apparently
heading for the RV parking area going about 20 mph on the concrete taxiway.
The meeter/greeter/ground director was desperately signaling for the RV to
stop since there were obstructions and people on the taxiway. At the last
second the RV driver finally saw the problem and slammed on breaks. I saw a
little puff of smoke from the tires as he locked the wheels. The tail rose
slowly with the elevator full up until the prop started beating the concrete
into submission. First time I had actually witnessed that as it happened.
Bit and pieces of the composite prop scattered everywhere. Then the tail
settled back onto the concrete. Confirmed: Taildraggers can and will do
that when suitably abused in operation.
