1-Have aquired an older unfinished project, boat stage...and plan to stretch
it two feet. I have successfully done 18" in the past but now I thought I
would beg the comments from others and to see if anyone else out there has
stretched this lenght. 2-This will be my fourth KR project. Unfortunately
none were kept long enough to later evaluate my use of blue board styrofoam
insulation instead of urethane foam. Does anyone on the KR net have
experience on this? 3-What is the useful life of a KR? Does anyone on this
list have a KR with the original builders placque afixed with the name Pat
Russo or Keith Hoag (my brother-in-law and partner in building)? The build
dates are in the seventies, eighties and nineties. My lord that is almost a
third of a century! I must be getting on. Fortunately my brain is still in
the embryonic stage.

Dan,

Sure pass this along, the best way to learn is through other peoples mistakes.

I'm doing great. The bruising is going away really fast. There has never been
any pain from the accident, just from the breathing tube down my throat during
surgery.

I went to the airport to look at the KR, it is not in good shape. The biggest
problem is the firewall. I never took off the cowl but the cowl is pulled away
from the fuselage over 1/2 inch. I will not get it home until next week, then
we will open things up so we can see what is going on.

Got your bags packed yet for the KR Gathering? Have a great time. Give
everyone a big Hello for me.

From: David Goodman [mailto:dgood...@verticalavionics.com]

Dan,

I sent this narrative to another KR builder to be put on the KR net so everyone
could see the lessons learned from this mishap, but it has not yet made it
there. I was in the plane with Jim.

I think it important to get the word out to people so they can (hopefully)
avoid the pitfall that reached up and grabbed Jim and I. I am cc?ing Jim on
this e-mail so he aware.

N522PC was a standard KR-2 with a Revmaster VW engine. The h-tail had small
extensions on it for stability, and had a trim tab that worked extremely well.
The instrument panel was a purely VHF-only set-up, with traditional steam
gauges, and it was well thought out. The workmanship was first rate, and
actually made me a bit envious. I had 12.6 hours on this airframe, and it flew
great. The total time on the plane was around 25 hours. 2PC flew very well,
with a stall speed around 53 MIAS, and was very easy to trim up and fly hands
off.

LESSONS LEARNED UP FRONT:

1. NEVER, EVER RESET THE NOSE FORWARD ON A BOUNCED LANDING. The result
will be a landing on the nose, with a high probability of nose gear collapse.
My first ?flight? in N191PZ (My own KR-2S) was inadvertent on a high speed taxi
test, and I did what Jim did, but not as severe. The result in my plane was a
destroyed nose gear that had to be replaced. I probably only moved the stick
forward 1/4?, but it was enough to bring the nose through. Jim moved the stick
more than that and we came through much faster as a result.

The proper procedure for a bounced landing is to add full power and hold the
nose attitude. If you contact the ground again, you will still be in a good
nose high position. If not, you are flying again and can execute a go around.

2. FLY THE PLANE TO STOP. I do not know if Jim got the brakes on or not,
but I do know if we had more speed on when we flipped, we would probably have
been killed.

3. WITH TWO PEOPLE IN THE KR, UPSIDE DOWN THERE IS NO ROOM TO MANEUVER.
Our feet were stuck under the instrument panel when we came to rest. I managed
to get mine free of the panel, but once I got my belt off, there was almost no
room to maneuver under the plane. I might have been able to get out of the
plane eventually, perhaps a ten minute effort, but if the plane had been on
fire it would have been doubtful I could have gotten out before the flames
reached the cockpit.

4. BRIEF EVERYTHING YOU ARE GOING TO DO BEFORE YOU FLY. Even if you are
flying by yourself, go over what you will do in an emergency. We did this, and
having a plan in your mind when things go bad will help you solve the problems
as they present themselves.

5. BRIEF UP, STRAP IN, AND THINK THROUGH WORST CASE SCENARIOS. Jim
suffered some bad lacerations to his face and forehead. When the plane
stopped, I checked myself, hands move, feet move, nothing feels broken. I was
hanging with my head about three or four inches from the ground. I looked
over at Jim and his face was in contact with the ground /canopy. When I
examined the aircraft in the hangar that afternoon, Jim?s lap belts were about
eight inches longer than mine. While Jim is a bit thicker than I am, I did
strap in very tightly using the seat straps first, then the shoulder harness.
My lower back was immobile. Additionally, when I saw the plane begin to tip, I
pulled my hands to my lap and tucked my head down and full forward. Maximize
your survival chances by thinking out what you will do, then keep thinking as
events unfold.

Narrative:

The day of the mishap, Jim and I flew for 1.1 hours in the morning, with him
flying from the right seat most of the time. We did nine landings, and other
than a tendency to line up right and accept right drift in close, Jim flew very
well. In fact, it was clear to me he was ready to fly from the le

KR> projector for the Gathering?

2010-09-08 Thread Mark Langford
Anybody have access to a projector that can be used to project computer
presentations at the Gathering? Willie Willson from Britain (retired 747-400
pilot, and a really good story teller) is going to give a presentation on
flying qualities of the KR, as well as 747's and Vickers Viscounts. We may
have a solid list of forums for Saturday already, so Willie may be up on Friday
afternoon or somewhere in there. Anyway, if somebody has access to one I'd
appreciate it if you could bring it. Please let me know if you think you can
swing it. I'll bring the laptop, I just need a projector with a VGA connector
on it.

I'll be up Thursday. The goal would be before lunch, but I have such a long
list of things I HAVE to do (like finish up and hastily install a new oil vapor
separator) that it might be after lunch.

Thanks,

KR> tach

2010-09-08 Thread STEVE bennett

The Tiny Tach will work on a Slick Mag. One removes the mag harness cap, drills
a 1/8" hole in it, pass the red wire through and wrap it around the unshielded
portion of the harness, inside the cap. The new TT are fully programable and
will run on just about any engine, as they can be set to sense 45 degrees 8
sparks per rev, 60 degrees 6 sparks per rev, 90 degrees 4 sparks per rev, 120
degrees 3 sparks per rev, 180 degrees 2 sparks per rev, 360 degrees 1 spark per
rev, or 720 degrees 1 spark per 2 rev, all in the same tachometer. They also
now have a resetable job timer in them, so on can set the oil change interval
for example at 25 hours and it wil let you know when you reach 25 hours.

Also have a UMA 2-1/4" tach that senses the singnal off the magnets in the
magneto in stock. If you run off the P lead, be sure to use a 1/4 amp fuse or
so between the mag and the tach.

KR> Jim Morehead's (and my) mishap in N522PC, lesson learned (long)

2010-09-08 Thread David Goodman
KR builders and pilots,

Here is a narrative of the salient points from Jim and my mishap last week
at KRIU. If anyone has questions, they may either e-mail me or call me at
360 678 1602. The goal is that everyone out there who is getting ready to
fly or will fly a KR understands how quickly things can go wrong. At the
same time, DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THIS AIRCRAFT! It responds to your inputs…
very quickly.

N522PC was a standard KR-2 with a Revmaster VW engine.  The h-tail had small
extensions on it for stability, and had a trim tab that worked extremely
well.  The instrument panel was a purely VHF-only set-up, with traditional

gracefully, and he was an ATP with an unbelievable amount of experience.

2.  FLY THE PLANE TO STOP.  I do not know if Jim got the brakes on or
not, but I do know if we had more speed on when we flipped, we would
probably have been killed.
3.  WITH TWO PEOPLE IN THE KR, UPSIDE DOWN THERE IS NO ROOM TO MANEUVER.
Our feet were stuck under the instrument panel when we came to rest.  I
managed to get mine free of the panel, but once I got my belt off, there was
almost no room to maneuver under the plane.  I might have been able to get

Maximize your survival chances by thinking out what you will do beforehand,
then keep thinking as events unfold.

6. REINFORCE YOUR TURTLEDECK. The turtledeck on 2PC collapsed about four
inches after the canopy shattered. If we had flipped with any more speed
than we did, the outcome would have been much different. Having now been in
a KR that went end-over, I will be strengthening my own turtledeck shortly.
On the subject of flipping, I never expected this to be something I would
experience in a KR. It happened anyway.

Narrative:

The day of the mishap, Jim and I flew for 1.1 hours in the morning, with him
flying from the right seat most of the time.  We did nine landings, and
other than a tendency to line up right and accept right drift in close, Jim
flew very well. He was ready to fly from the left seat based on how he had
done on the right, so we talked about line-up, power, missed approaches, and
bounced landings.  I stopped just before we got in and said a quick prayer,
“Lord, thank you for the great day to go flying, give us a safe flight, and
watch over us, amen.”  We hopped in and were airborne ten minutes later.

Takeoff was unremarkable, and we headed to the downwind.  The first pass was
tight on the field so we went around.  Jim did drop the nose on the first
pass at about 400 feet and I talked to him about it as we climbed out, that
he had to not let the nose drop drastically on approach or

anyway as the company suggests hardwiring the unit into the system

chance on having to do it all over again. The new regulator also
gives me a 1 volt higher charging rate. I might have a problem with

I'll also bring some ramps that are perfect for those scales. I have two of

them, anyway, and they are something like 1.5" thick. Another of those
would be nice, along with something like a 24" stool for the tailwheel
planes, although a cardboard box or two might get that job done. If anybody

that's driving has one of those it'd be good.

Last week I attended my first EAA meeting at i39 in the hopes of meeting
some KR folks before the gathering and to ask some questions. Nobody at the
meeting knew about the KR Gathering. ;-) They were quite glad I came and
told them about it.

I'll bring some extra canvas chairs on Friday for anyone who might need
them.

OK gang enough is enough.I was at the airport today going over the final
details of the gathering. The manager of the FBO and I walked the grounds to
finalize the camping arrangements, the availability of tables & chairs, hangar
access, vehicle access, food, snacks. fuel, tiedowns, bathrooms and the entire
list of things we have been going over the last couple of months. The local
EAA is a group of people of for the most part, no long pilots and like to get
together to talk about the golden days of flyingas in why in the world to
we need radios.I actually did not provide them with info for a reason, oh
well!! The place knows about the gathering, I can't help the EAA doesn't or
some line boy who works 1 day every three weeks doesn't know about the
gathering. Can you tell I've had enough of this??? The place knows we are
coming and is waiting with open arms. Be safe and see everyone shortly.
