KR> Fwd: glass ? panel]
FYI, to the computer savvy guys, Virg Original Message Subject:glass ? panel http://www.eink.com/kits/amepd.html I got a chance to look closely at a Kindle this past weekend. It has a fascinating display. The above link is the marketing site for a protyping system which uses the e-ink flat-panel display, the same display used on the new Kindle electronic book. The protyping kit (at $3K) includes a computer with Linux preinstalled. What I wish I had now was the time (and disposable cash) to buy one of these units to see if it could be interfaced to aircraft engines and instrumentation. What especially interests me is the very readable low-power display. It is just as easily read in bright sunlight as in dim light. The display draws a small current only when the image is being updated, so when used as an electronic book, the unit (which weighs only a few ounces) has a battery-life of one month. Friends of mine are building LSA aircraft without standard electrical system to minimize weight. Some are using small solar panels to charge lightweight lithium batteries to power their instrumentation. The very light weight and extremely low-power display may have a future in aircraft. Larry I love this idea but, your pic shows only 1 tube recessed into the ribs. How do you get 12 gal per side with only 1 tube? I calc that one 5"x72" tube is 6 gal. Here is what I came up with for 12 gallons. http://www.kr2seafury.com/11.html, scroll down and hit refresh if you don't see it at first. And I thought the engine decision was going to be hard. This fuel tank business is a much harder decision. But I am zeroing in on my design. They run from root to tip and extend only 10 inches behind the forward spar. From full to empty tanks my C.G. shifts forward 1 inch. I seldom run them completely full. Most of my local flying is done with 1/4 to 3/4 full tanks. fo.html

I think this is causing alot of email traffic that should be >> private.<< That question has come up several times over the years and the answer is "that's the way we like it". If it comes up with the originator's email address in it, any replies go to that guy only and it's a real effort (more than many KRnet folks can muster, apparently) to change the email address to the whole list. The result would probably be a ten-fold drop in traffic (and therefore information, food for thought, and admittedly, drivel), and KRnet would cease to be as useful as it is. It's a little painful the way it is now, but it's an acceptable level of pain that I try to ride herd on . I think it's better to have more info exchanged and more drivel than to have less information going to the subscribers, and several informal polls over the years agrees. Same goes for switching to a web-based forum. That's not going to happen either, and that'd take me an hour or two to go through. I hear quite often that this is one of the better lists on the net regarding building homebuilt aircraft, and I'd like to keep it that way. I could change the "TO" field to just you, but others are probably wondering the same thing, and it makes sense to let everybody know right now, rather than answer that question twenty more times to individuals. Maybe it's just a self-defense mechanism for me, come to think of it. But for items that really only apply to one guy and nobody else would be interested (like cute little personal quips), deleting kr...@mylist.net from the TO field and copying the originator's email into the TO field is a great idea... KR> Outboard fuel tanks
I have had three spam cans with wing tip tanks. And believe me. I have not always had picture perfect lands through out my flying career. And never have I had a problem that surfaced or that my annuals found any stress points on the wing structure. So, my inclination about the stress indicated by others is something that anyone should consider. But on the other hand I know that for me that until some prof is set in front of me. I will be fine with tip tanks. And yes, I am installing tip tanks on my KR1. The fuel is at least 6.5' further away from me in the cabin. And it is only 2.3 gal. per side and another 5.8 gal. in ea. outside wing panel in alum. tubes. I will be using an auto fuel pump to bring the fuel to the engine with an electric fuel pump boost. I have a picture on my desk top of a KR2 with tip tanks in flight. I guess I just need more prof if I were not to install them. For now, tip tanks a coming. M. Greg Martin

KR> Outboard fuel tanks
Charles, Your comment about the outer wing being the least stressed point on the wing, the reason that is because there is no weight there & the aerofoil is not holding up much of the a/c. If you put 30 lbs of fuel out there the stress could change from the least stressed to the most stressed. If you did a heavy landing with 30lbs of fuel at the win tip it may turn into a disaster. Be careful. Robin. - Original Message - From: "Charles Smith" To: Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 8:42 AM Subject: KR> Outboard fuel tanks Watching this discussion of fuel tanks closely. I have built a Dragonfly (hasn't flown yet) and found the construction technique to be fast and easy (you have to be fast when applying epoxy). However, I want to start over with a conventional design that fits the requirements of E-LSA. I would like to use the same construction techniques used in the D-fly but do not know what the parameters or results of putting a hollow space inside of a foam core wing would be but think it might be doable as wing tip tanks, just hollow out the outermost 'x' inches of wing and use it as the tank, the least stress place in the wing. I am looking at the KR design as the basis for this plane and soaking up any ideas I can run across to help me out.
