KR> fuel system fittings
Hi Guys Thanks to everybody that responded to my queries re fuel system fittings. I have to admit that in all the responses I got, there were a lot of personal preferences and opinions but few examples of genuine reasons or facts favouring either system. The hose most commonly used here is regular aeroquip reinforced "rubber" hose rated at 30psi if I am not mistaken. The barbrd fittings are generally brass with multiple barbs concentric to the fitting. These are "ratchet" type barbs and not just swollen rings around the fitting. As Mark L said, they can be a real pain to remove even after the hose clamp has been totally removed (could this characteristic not be an advantage). We have a JABIRU agency here and all their aircraft are assembled using the blue tinted clear fuel piping shown in the spruce catalogue as used in microlights etc. I suspect that all Jabiru factory assembled aircraft are done this way no matter where in the world they are built. I know that their oil cooler kits supplied by Jabiru Australia come shrink wrapped on a card with rubber hose and hose clamps. I know this because I have installed two 120hp Jabiru motors already. I ended up having hoses made up by a local hydraulic supplier with proper fittings on them. Unfortunately the AN fuel fittings are very expensive for us here in South Africa and can take up to 6 Wweeks to ship them in. We therefore use the best "rubber hose" locally available with barbed fittings and hose clamps. So far I have not heard of anybody having any problems. My personal opinion is that if if done with care the rubber hose / barbed fitting method has less of a chance of developing a leak over an extended perion of time but thats just my opinion. Thanks guys. Regards Dene Collett Avlec Projects cc Port Elizabeth South Africa

KR> Time Machine still ticking smoothly...
NetHeads, Today I flew down to the other end of the state to buy a car for the kids. My wife came along to be part of the process, and to drive it back if we bought it. It was a gorgeous flying day, but with tailwinds around 35 mph at 9500' on the way down, and similar headwinds for the trip back. We left a little late and I ran it nearly wide open for the trip down, and since I was racing against sunset for the return trip, I did run it wide open on the trip back. We bought the car, and she drove it back while I flew. Bottom line is I did 520 miles at nearly wide open throttle, at an average speed way over my usual 160 mph "economy" cruise, and still landed with 6 gallons of fuel left over. That's still in the low thirties as far as MPG goes (not my usual ~40 mpg), but it was a quick trip both ways for me, and I still beat the Volkswagen's MPG by twenty percent, not to mention I made it home three hours earlier than she did. I got another nice sunset picture Friday night. See the one at the top of http://www.n56ml.com/sunsets/ . It's "unreal" looking... Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com website at http://www.N56ML.com

Answer: Maps can be oriented both North-Up and Track-Up (as of latest software update). I'm needing to replace my old Lawrance 500 as the data base is 5+ years old and can't be updated. This unit looks GREAT but don't know if I have room to install it around my panel. In looking at the KR this morning my plan might be to move my Lawrance to the compass location on top of the instrument panel and set it on the "compass rose" screen and use it to replace my compass, move my radio from the bottom of my panel to the upper left where the Lawrance is currently mounted, and put the IFly700 between my legs below the panel. Question for those using one, will the screen rotate 90 degrees? Maybe something even better if I understand it correctly. Just touch the screen and it tells you the distance and direction to that point from your present location. There is a complete, easily read and understood, manual on their web page under support. There are nice clear pictures with labels of all the input/output jacks on the unit. Their manual looks to be one of the best I've seen for any GPS unit I've looked at. They are definitely on the right track and going places as they add a few more features. Don't look back Garmin. Your $2000 and $3000 units are going to have some serious competition. I e-mailed them to see if the unit could be used in the portrait mode but the answer is "no" for now. Only landscape. Maybe in future versions. Larry Flesner
