KR> Weight & Balance

2013-05-21 Thread Sid Wood
Completed a weight & balance on my tri-gear KR-2 today. Started from
scratch and re-measured the wheel locations. The main wheels were 0.25 inch
further forward and the nose was 0.5 inch further forward than from the
numbers previously used. One explanation would be a new nose wheel strut.
For the mains it was probably closer attention to detail. Instead of using
one number for the fuel arm, I made progressive measurements adding five
gallons at a time and derived an arm number each time. It does change,
granted, not by much. I think that is due to the tilt of the tanks loading
to the rear and then adding fuel forward as the tank fills. Empty weight is
781 pounds; FAA calculated gross is 1178 pounds for a useful load of 397
pounds.
With my tender body onboard the CG ranges from 12.4" full fuel to 11.2"
empty. Just guessing from my first flight results, I could use the extra
stability. The price for that extra stability is adding 30 pounds of lead
to the cowl about 0.5 inch behind the spinner. Really need to move the
engine forward another 1.25 inches for best efficiency, but that major
operation will wait until next winter. Right now the airplane and I are
ready to fly.

Good for him! Most builders use the "Diehl" gear, which is now available
from NVaero at
http://www.nvaero.com/categories/Aircraft-Components/Landing-Gear/. It can
also be bought used from builders who've given up the dream, but those finds
are somewhat rare...

Hi, sending this for my dad who is building a KR1. It has been his dream his
whole life and now at 75 he's doing it. He would like to know where to get the
landing gear? His name is Wayne Davis and I'm Becky his daughter. Thanks

Does anyone out there have the video of the 13th annual KR gathering? I've
lost mine and that's the last gathering in which I flew my original KR N1977M.

KR> Resin Wars.

2013-05-21 Thread m.ladigo at cox.net
Lee, I believe you misunderstood what Brian said about VE bonding because of
the uncured layer of resin at the surface. He was indicating that VE is a
"laminating" resin and that uncured layer of resin is for the VE to bond to ITS
OWN previous layer, ...not so it can bond to epoxy laminates. If you are going
to lay VE up over a completely cured surface of VE, you will need to scuff it,
also. If you examine a part layed up in a mold with VE resin, you will find
that the side next to the mold surface is hard cured as well as any epoxy. The
side away from the mold surface however is still gummy and unsandable unless
you have wax additive or cover it with PVA or peal-ply.
For those that don't know me, I hangared with Dan for almost 18 years and spent
countless hours working with VE just as Lee.
As far as which resin is best? ...each has its pros and cons. Use the resin
that you are comfortable with using.
