KR> Ignition switch

I don't think so. It's supposed to be rated for 10A, and I was only
pulling 5.1A through it, and one just like it (bought at the same time
from AS) powered the same system on N56ML for all that time with zero
problems. I think it was infant mortality...it literally rattles now,
as if a contact broke completely loose inside. I borrowed the one from
N56ML for now, but will install a 30A DC version shortly. I flew it
almost every day last week, and the only reason I quit after only a half
hour today is because it started hailing on me...

Thank Mark for the reply. Give me something to think about.?
Did the switch fail because it was undersized for a DC circuit? ?

Only one side failed...the beauty of a double pole switch...the two
circuits are completely isolated from each other, except they are within
one enclosure. I'm pretty sure WW got that idea from me...I did it
first and he liked the idea, at least that's what he told me. You could
use two SPST switches, but when you do that you have the possibility of
having them both turned off at once...not good in a rapid-first highly
tense situation where that could be overlooked, and you'd also be
connecting fuel to ignition, rather than keeping them separated. You'd
need four SPST switches to accomplish the same functionality, with an
increase in human error potential. When I flip my switch I wouldn't
even notice anything happened except the green LED turns RED (it's a
bicolor). See http://www.n56ml.com/electrical/index.html to get the
gist of how mine is done (although the bicolor LED isn't shown here).
N56ML flew 1130 hours with this setup without a single hiccup.

Since the bad switch incident, I now start the engine with the switch in
the "backup" mode, so the ignition gets its juice from the backup
battery, rather than the main circuit. This not only gives me a check
of the backup battery, but it ensures the ignition system is getting a
full 12.8V during starting, rather than "whatever is left over" when the
starter has taken a huge bite out of the main battery power. Once it
starts, I swap it over to "primary" to make that red LED go away, and
continue to fly it that way until I land. Works for me! Of course the
iEFIS also monitors and displays the voltage on both backup and main
battery at all times anyway, so the main point is more juice to the
ignition system and a check of the switch, rather than doing it on runup.

KR> Tri-gear main wheel location

2014-10-08 Thread Sid Wood
Update on moving the main wheels on my KR-2:
Removed the main gear fiberglass struts. These are supposed to be used for
a tail dragger version. Obtained Scotch ply Grumman Cougar blanks from
Fletch Air. Planed these blanks from 1-inch down to 0.750-inch on my
Craftsman wood power planer. Cut the blanks to size on my Craftsman metal
cutting band saw. Used the original gear legs as patterns for the upper
section of the leg and for match drilling to fit the old aluminum castings.
Canted the lower leg to get essentially the same shape, but added the
boomerang shape for the tri-gear; moved the end for the axle bracket
3-inches further aft. Rounded the edges and sanded smooth to get rid of saw
marks and eliminate stress risers for these highly stressed parts. The new
gear legs fit the original aluminum castings bolt holes precisely like the
old legs. Now trying to fit up the axle brackets to get the 0-degree toe
before drilling. Also need to wrap the legs with 2 BID fiberglass for
better torsional strength, streamlining and plastic soda straw conduit for
brake lines.
The work is going slow, but so is the worker.

KR> Newsletters 168-214

2014-10-08 Thread Mark Wegmet
Go to your library with a flash drive. Most libraries have internet access,
so you can "research" the web site and download the content to the
flash/thumb drive. If your library doesn't have it, check with a friend who
has high speed access. You can find 2GB thumb drives for around $5 if you
look - some sales content comes on flash drives with that much "free" space
left on them.

Just a suggestion.
