Pete,
I had good results using UV smooth prime.  Easy on the lungs and the ability to 
roll allows priming areas w/out the hassle of spraying.  Multiple thin coats 
for best results.  It dries quickly.  Squeegeeing is an important step

I think I used it (Smooth Prime) early on in my construction, but decided it
really didn't make much difference whether you use Smooth Prime or some
other standard high build primer that was sandable. I never sprayed the
prime coats, only used a roller.  I actually flew the plane that way for
about 6 months. My 1st finish paint job was sprayed on using a "Boat"
acrylic enamel.  That didn't last. My second paint job was Stewart Systems
and it seems to be holding up much better (rolled on).
