Dan, Its nice to see someone else installing one of these. That is a great idea to level everything. I have a D60 with the D10A and hope to put mine in within a month or two. KR> Re: Landing light
I installed the Rigid Industries light that Craig pointed out. It comes with the mount for the light. I mounted it to my forward spar using a piece of wood. I drilled a bolt sized hole through it, and a slightly larger partial hole that goes half through the wood on the inside for the head of the bolt. I glued the board to the front side of the spar so the bolts stick out forward, then just used the supplied mounting hardware that came with the lights. My plane is not complete, and have not flown with it yet. But it seems like it will do a great job. The location was the only real-estate left. I originally installed a heat shield that is commercially available on the exhaust to protect the battery. That worked for nearly 3 years. Then i started to rework the baffles on the engine to tighten them up. I started cooking batteries then. I built another shield around the battery that left air space around it and open top and bottom. I then robbed a 1" scat tube line that feed cold air to the coils and split it to feed air directly to the shroud around the battery. That has been in place for about 150 hours now and i have been keeping check on the battery to make sure it isn't starting to bulge out. Mark is correct that the cowl in general is around 20 degrees above OAT but there are certainly hot spots in there too. KR> Purchased a KR-2, want to change the landing gear config....
My project was originally a conventional retract. It was a lot of work to convert to a tri-gear. Also there was no structure in the wing stub for wing walk area. So adding it took a lot of cutting a re-glassing. If I would've left it and learned how to fly tail dragged, it would probably be flying now. But I am happy with my choice, and would do it over. Remember, it's your plane. Make it what you want it to be. I recently purchased a completed KR-2 (N86DK, S/N 4336), fixed conventional gear & some form of VW motor, posa carb... There appears to be minor glass repair needed on the elevator (I was an airframe mechanic in the Army, so that's no big deal to me), and it's short a few instruments, but the biggest concern for me is the landing gear... I want to convert it to tri-gear, as all my time has been in 172s & I'm not quite comfortable picking up a new airframe and learning to fly tailwheel at the same time. I know that some aircraft can be converted by simply 'flipping around' the main gear so that it angles backwards and is mounted to the back of the spar, and then adding a nose wheel - is this a workable concept with the KR (keep the stock mains but flip/reverse-mount, and add the Diehl nosewheel), or do I need to buy new mains as well? P.S. Tim, I don't know about the plans. I'm building a standard kr-2, and I don't know the difference in the plans. My plans for the tri-gear came with my landing gear (I believe the nose gear assembly). Sorry I can't be more help, Derek Lewis -- Original Message -- From: "Tim Caughron" To: Subject: KR> Plans lacking details List-Post: krnet@list.krnet.org Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2011 23:52:57 -0700 Hi guys, sitting down tonight to plan the layout of my fuselage. Now, I love logic puzzles, and am pretty good at them, but this is ridiculous. I'm hoping someone can take a minute and check to see that I have a full inventory of plans here. I purchased plans KR-2 #9809/KR-2S #1196 in January 2005 from RR. Maybe I'm crazy, or just need to make up some dimensions, but I cannot figure out some of these. For instance, looking at the Horizontal Framing Layout on Dwg A for the 2S, it only gives me the width locations of Stn's A, D, and G. It shows the max width between F & G and straight from Stn I. Nowhere does it give me the width of Stn O, or any other location that would allow me to figure the correct dimensions. I looked through every page in my manual, and the best it does is tell me to refer to the plans for all the correct dimension of the layout??? Can anyone tell me if there is a dimension sheet for all the called out parts on the drawings? Seems there should be a reference to say Station A - O are xx inches in length, or there should be some key dimensions to allow one to figure those out. At the very least, the plans should tell me how wide the aft end of the longerons should be dimensioned - come on! Another cause for concern with my plan set is I plan to build a tri-gear version. Nowhere on any drawing is tri-gear addressed, and the manual deals only with tail-gear details - no mention of tri-gear period! I'm sure the situation is worse the farther from simply laying out the fuselage frame I will get. Am I missing something here? Here is an inventory of the plans I received with this set, if someone notices something missing, please let me know so I can try to contact Jeanette and get them, thanks: KR-2 Drawings Dwg 1 - Fuselage Assy.
