KR> Xpdr antenna

2015-05-13 Thread GaryH
According to AeroElectric Connection p 13-11, transponder ground plane of 5
1/2 inch diameter is sufficient. Thickness should be sufficient to support
the antenna and cable attached to BNC.

Yep. Very easy. I cut out the bottom of an aluminum pie plate. It's
worked well. Be sure and keep the antenna clean. Mounted below it picks
up exhaust debris. It's surprising how a light coating of exhaust stuff
will cause mode c problems - to the extent that some people will think
their transponder is failing.

It's their placement when loaded for flight that is of primary
concern. Put them too far to the rear and it will be more difficult
to rotate of takeoff. One lightweight aircraft that we all know
won't even set with the nose wheel on the ground without the pilot on
board. If loading and unloading is a problem a retractable tail
stand might be in order. The B-24 puts out a pogo stick when parked.

I see no one has answered your question. Setting the angles on the spars is
what creates the correct washout. Once that is done, and you keep it that
way through the installation of the foam, sanding, and glass layup, it will
be right in the end.

I have not ever had to do this because both of my KRs came to me as projects
that already had this done, but that is how I understand it is done.

Someone who knows otherwise, please advise.

I used clear edge grain Douglas-fir 3/4" thick, boards from a local lumber
yard in building my KR2. Have to be sure it meets specs in grain run-nout,
no knots, etc.

For the longerons I planed it to 5/8" thickness (left the height at 3/4",
dampened the longerons and bent gradually over several days in
assembling/shaping the fuselog: no cracks/splits.

Laminated the spars ;do not want to cut spars from thicker pieces due to
possible hidden pitch pockets.

About 15% heavier and stronger than sitka spruce, a little over build/safety
facter.
