KR> Mgl, dynon,Garmin

2016-11-22 Thread James McGauhey
I'm in WA, with Dynon just down the road. We have several Dynon employees
in our EAA Chapter 84 and they have given us great support. I have a KR
project to get to in about a year, but now building a Zenith CH-650 with 4
others. We ask Dynon many questions and get immediate answers.

As to the fuel flow issue, we were considering the injected version of Rotax
912, but opted for the carb version, and still have a return line. We
looked at having both sensors to determine net fuel flow. The sensors are
expensive. Per Dynon suggestion, we have only 1 sensor and will adjust that
in the setup after we fly for the % of net fuel flow. Apparently this is
easily done with the Dynon Skyview. It seems the primary supply line sends
back a fairly consistent % of fuel back down the return line. Dynon said
about 70% is the setting to start with, estimating about 30% will go back to
tanks via the return line. Again, this is from Dynon suggestion and I have
no actual experience. We did set up a double throw fuel switch so the
return line sends back to the supply tank as we switch. Many others have
only one fuel return line going to one of the wing tanks. That shouldn't
matter.

The Dynon has many, many features that I am just learning. Like never
having to twist a dial to set a frequency on the radio. Just push the touch
screen airport icon and load frequencies, then Dynon radio has buttons for
Ground, Tower, Approach, Unicom, etc. Of course, there are dials to use if
you want. If you see you are using less fuel due to tailwind, and want to
extend your planned route, just touch airport icon further on and push
button to tell you if you have sufficient fuel to get there. Over 100 pages
in the user manual and it will take a bit to learn, but wow, what features
and simplicity when you know how it all works.

For my next project, the KR, I too am looking at options between Dynon and
MGL. The Dynon package we put into the 650 cost $14,400 with two auto-pilot
servos. That's a complete package. The Skyview itself is only $4K, but add
ADSB, transponder, intercom, radio, gps, etc, etc, and it soon adds up to
real money. I think the MGL is less expensive and as much as I love Dynon,
I am on a tight budget. Having 5 people share costs on the 650 is very
nice; I won't have that on the KR. I have more than a year to make decision
on my KR project, but am reading anxiously and learning from all of you.

KR> VW Engine

2016-08-31 Thread James McGauhey
I'm helping a friend whose father died and left a VW engine in the garage.
He built, flew and sold a homebuilt, and this seems to be a backup engine
left over. I don't know about size, condition, or any details. You can see
some photos at

It is in the Seattle area. There is no documentation or log. We're not
sure about value. I figure somewhere $1K to $2.5K. I'd rather not be in
the middle, but contact me and I'll put you in direct contact with her.

KR> Super2S

2016-07-13 Thread James McGauhey
I bought the Super2S from a fellow who purchased at auction in Phoenix.
Whoever stopped paying the storage bills. The boat is built with turtledeck
on, wings about half way with main wing structure built but fuel tanks need
sealing and testing, then top skin foam and skin applied. There's a lot of
hangar rash. Looks like someone either dropped it or took a baseball bat to
the canopy. It's totally trashed. And there's a few repairs that need
doing. I can't work on it for about 6 months because I'm finishing a Zenith
CH-650 and am committed to others to get that project flying. Then I will
own that with others, but would prefer to own a KR by myself to take on long
trips.

Anyway, I guess I have now joined the ranks of KR builders; if the Super2S
qualifies as a KR. It has been modified in every way and probably should
have its own designation. While its basic roots are KR . Well, I guess
even the KR2S is much modified from anything original. But good designs do
that. They morph and change. Hopefully the changes are improvements. But
thankfully there are purists like Mark, who fly a totally original, stock,
no changes made KR ; )

I was very pleased that Scott Watts replied to my email and said he would
support in any way possible for my completion, but I don't know what status
of his or any other builds are. I'd sure like to know when a Super2S flies
and what it performs like.

I was at the McMinnville gathering last year. I'm the one who shot and
posted the video of Mark's talk on glassing. I had no idea at that time I'd
actually own a glass KR project.

So I now are a KR builder!!

KR> After the Gathering

2015-06-27 Thread James McGauhey
Once again, I'd like to remind folks about a great fly-in very near the
Gathering, and on the weekend following, Sept 11-12. Hood River is just
east of Portland, along the Columbia River, and has an amazing fly-in of
many vintage aircraft. Technically, it's Ken Jernstedt Airfield, 4S2.

It's not just the fly-in, it's the museum that is on the field - WAAAM, that
is the best attraction. Some wonderful old planes, cars, and motorcycles.
And they all fly or drive, and they do so frequently. Every 2nd Sat there's
some that take to the road or the air.

And the best part - only $5 per PLANE, not per person. Gets fly-in,
camping, showers, and museum entry. And Friday night's spaghetti feed for
pilots and fly-ins. Food available cheap for each meal all weekend. Beer
and wine garden.

Bring tie-downs, tent and camping gear. But you really won't need stove or
cooking stuff.

Here's video I made of last year's event. It's bit long, but skip around or
just enjoy the music. They flew the 1910 Parker Pusher, had an engine
failure, and I caught it on tape.

KR> KR Gathering video

2015-03-11 Thread James McGauhey
Mark and others,

I'd be happy to video the workshop, and other events at the gathering. That
is if I attend. It's on my calendar now, but I'll also be doing the Hood
River Fly-In the next weekend, also in Oregon. My Social Director may have
other plans for me when we get closer to these dates.

I haven't decided whether to drive or fly from AWO. It's a short flight,
but I usually use 2 to 4 cameras and lots of tripods, lights, and other
"stuff." By myself it will all fit in my C172, but if another person comes
along.. And I like to share these events with others. Plus there's
camping gear if I don't hotel it.

If I'm doing an "official" video I'll use multiple cameras, but if just a
spectator or participant, I'll use just one. Something like your workshop
it would be good to use more than one camera so there's close-ups of the
hands-on stuff.

Posted before, so some of you have seen this.
Here's one example of using just one camera - at last year's Hood River
Fly-In:
https://vimeo.com/107101162

Here's a short example of using multiple cameras at a high school concert;
Emma has a great voice:
http://youtu.be/5P6WQZiHLC
This is more like the setup I would use for a workshop.

The only issue is editing takes 40 to 100 hrs for any major event (2 to 5
hrs per minute of finished video). As I'm still working and being the guy
around the house, with a teen foster kid in high school, that can take a
while to publish.

And I don't mean to hog in here. If there's anyone else who'd rather video,
I'm super happy to just watch the show and learn.

Both the same.

It's 33 min, so either grab a libation when you have some time, or download
then watch as you work in the shop.

KR> 2015 Gathering

2014-09-20 Thread James McGauhey
I've been lurking and enjoying the posts as I'm deciding on which plane to
build. Budget is very tight, but safe and a reasonably quick and reliable
cross-country vehicle is desired.

As for the 2015 Gathering, there's a little, but getting better, known
destination at Hood River, OR; Ken Jenstedt Airfield. It has, IMHO, one of
the best museums of the history of planes, cars, and motorcycles. They're
not polished museum pieces (well, some are), but regular looking vehicles.
And the planes fly, and the cars and motorcycles drive. (Every month 2nd
Tues) It's about 100 wheel miles and 85 propeller miles from McMinnville.
AND, they have a Fly-In the weekend AFTER Labor Day. The museum and fly-in
started about 8 yrs ago, with 50 planes flying in. This year there were
over 300. But it's not the quantity, it's the quality. While my C-172 and
your KR's will fit right in, the focus is in Antique - as it's the WAAAM.
The Western Antique Airplane and Automobile Museum. Oh, and as for
registration fees for the fly-in - they're very high .. $5. That gets you
aircraft parking, camping, showers, toilets, and admission to the museum for
the 3 days. And that's per plane, not per person. Food is reasonable $ and
available each meal of the weekend.

Did I say their planes fly and their rolling vehicles roll? I mean
virtually all you see. Even the 1910 Curtiss-Parker Pusher. It flew this
Fly-In, had an engine failure - and well, you'll have to watch my video...
No, the engine didn't re-start.

This is a preliminary copy. It's much too long at 44 minutes, the sound is
too high, and there's several more changes I want to make. (Suggestions
invited.) So settle down with a libation and watch, or just watch 10 min of
it, or ??? It seemed appropriate to post now as the discussion was options
for more attractions around the 2015 Gathering.

It's not public yet as I'm still working on the final version. And I'm not
a pro videographer. Just a "serious amateur" trying to make and share
travelogue's of my adventures. So some is shaky as much is handheld.
