DJ;
I was in the same place you find yourself when I first began looking
at the KR-2. I can tell you emphatically, skip the trike, tail draggers are
easy just a little different.
For a start they fly absolutely the same, (I have flown both), once
you are airborne there is no difference at all. As to taking off, it is
very straight forward, this little bird is fun and thrilling but not at all
full of problem behaviors. It will do exactly what you ask it to. Push the
throttle full forward smoothly and apply right rudder,( if you have a
clockwise prop from the pilots seat) and gently apply a bit of neutral
stick, or just a touch of forward stick even better. Soon the tail begins
to lift off and you hear the drop in fuselage noise, as the tail wheel comes
off the ground. Let the speed build to takeoff speed and gently lean back
on the stick and you are flying.
Go flying for at least one hour, nothing too fast at first nor too
steep in the turns, just get familiar with the plane. Should take about 30
minutes and you double it for fun, Watch for heat.
Landings are very straight forward also, fly the plane to the runway
like it was a trike and just as it is about to touch down, (ever so nose
high to keep the imaginary nose gear off), you freeze your hand and wrist
and allow the plane to roll on, on the mains. Soon as you're on the mains
put forward pressure on the stick to keep the tail up. Throttle off, allow
the speed to bleed off, when the tail just won't fly anymore, and settles
on, (you can hear the noise) use full back stick and gentle brakes to come
to a stop. Taxi may require "s" turns to see forward, and never go faster
than a walk, back to the button to start all over again.
Looks pretty cool too!
Best luck
Jim

Subject: KR> taildraggers
Hi all,
I've been looking for a tricycle gear KR-2 in flying or near flying
condition, which will give me something to fly until my project is
finished. There seem to be many more taildragger KRs than trikes. I
have a few hundred hours in a tricycle gear Glasair, so I am not worried
about the "sporty" flight characteristics, but what I am curious about
is how hard is it to land and ground taxi a taildragger KR-2? I have
zero tail dragger experience, but have been considering getting the tail
wheel endorsement. Would a KR-2 taildragger be okay for a very low time
tail wheel pilot, or should I continue my search for tricycle gear?
Thanks,
-Dj
