After some serious checking out I'm going to change my retrac landing
gear to fixed. If anyone has any parts for this and you're going to the
gathering next month I'd pick them up there.

Also I have a KR2 (boat only with wings) with a boat trailer I'd like to
sell. I could bring it to the gathering as well. For pictures go the F/B (

) and if you want the plane and trailer $1,300.

I also have a 1835 VW with an Ellison Throttle Body and a EIS 2,000 $2,500
and prop. If you want everything I will talk turkey.

All I've seen around here is 91. That's what I'm gonna use. However if
you're gonna use that it is recommended that you have a recirculation
(insulated) love installed if you're using a throttle body system.

I'm using Eaton Synflex Solstice 4247-041 Air Brake Performance. Meets
SAEJ844 Type A 1/4" OD. DOT 1913 (08/14). It is used on semi's air braking
system which can withstand high consentrations of alcohol (if the air line
freezes in the winter they pour several ounces of alcohol to thaw the lines
out).

Re: KR> Mogas Blues.

2018-08-04 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
I'm sealing my wing tanks with a product from KBS Coatings
(KBS-Coatings.com). Randy, 877-548-9323 ext 123, was very helpful. I hope
to eliminate future problems.

After years of running Mogas in both the O-200 in my KR, and the O-320 in
my SuperCub, I have run into a particularly nasty bunch of Mogas after
moving to Arkansas. In NM, I had a good source for alcohol free premium
Mogas and burned it for years with no issues at all. But after moving to a
new area, other than testing for alcohol, how does one verify that the
mogas being sold is free of any detrimental chemicals?

In April I started running a new brand of premium Mogas (everything where I
moved is new to me). Testing for Alcohol showed it to be alcohol free.
This summer I was away from the planes for a few weeks. When I got back to
them, the flow meter on my fueling rig had failed (plastic gear that runs
submerged in fuel failed), there were several leaks in my fueling rig,
including the fuel nozzle and the hoses. At the same time, both tanks in
my supercub developed leaks and the O-rings in my primer failed. I'm not
sure what kind of additive is in this fuel, but whatever it is dissolves
epoxy, pipe dopes, and damages neoprene rubber.Impressive. I was in a
real panic as I had been running this stuff in both planes.

I have spent the last 2 weeks working on the fueling rig and the planes,
and trying to assess the damage to the planes. What I found is, the epoxy
tanks in the SuperCub are both compromised and leaking at points where
there were penetrations through the tanks for various plumbing parts like
the fuel drains and fuel pickups. I will have to cut the tanks open and
repair from the inside, which will give me a chance to better assess the
damage. Additionally, the O-rings in my 2 year old primer failed. New
O-rings and some fuel lube fixed the primer problem.

The fueling rig in my truck (12V fuel pump, flow meter, filter assy, and
fuel nozzle all mounted to a 110G steel tank) had to have new hoses, the
1-1/2 and 2 inch piping had to be dismantled and put back together with new
pipe dope. The fuel meter had to be replaced. And the fuel nozzle needs
new O-rings.

I drained the tanks on the KR, which are also epoxy, but were sloshed with
an alcohol resistant slosh compound 22 years ago. Upon inspection I can
see that the fuel etched the surface of the slosh compound, but I can't
find any peeling or flaking compound; and I have no leaks. So at least the
KR is OK for now.

Not looking for advice, but am putting this out there for discussion. I'd
love to hear ideas about how one verifies that the fuel is good other than
testing for alcohol. I don't need to hear about the wonders of vinylester
as that was an unknown at the time my KR was built, and the tanks in the
Cub were already built when I bought the project.

For now, the KR is still flyable. But it is unlikely I'll complete the
fuel tank and wing repairs to the SuperCub before late fall.

KR> grass runway

2018-04-01 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
On a grass runway, what length of runway is comfortable for you to use? VW
1835cc 650 # airplane (without pilot and passenger). 1,200' altitude. No
flaps or belly board (belly board can be added). SW to NE runway (N & S
winds prevailing).

KR> Mini spring fly-in

2018-03-22 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
Just a reminder that on Saturday April 14, 2018 for those of you who can
fly, drive, parachute in, come to MO9 The Hanger Kafe and see draft horses
plowing a field, people parachuting, and all sorts of aircraft at MO9!

I'd like to host the annual KR fly-in in Sept of 2019 or 2020. There's a
meeting room we can have seminars in, great food, camping (electric, water,
and sewer is available) and just plain fun in rural Missouri. 100 LL and
Jet A available. For those that want to stay in a motel Mt. Vernon is about
8 miles to the south. I'd arrange a shuttle bus for lodging. However
staying at the airport would be a blast. Bond fires, remote control
aircrafts, and even maybe a kite or two could happen.

KR> MO9 lunch?

2018-02-11 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
For those of you who live in the central part of our country, would any
of you like to fly in for lunch? I'm looking at March or April of 2018.
Located West of Miller MO, West of Springfield, MO ENE of Joplin, MO. They
have the Hanger Kafe, 3,300' 18/36 runway (FAA hasn't updated the extension
that I know of). Great food, fun, and maybe a future annual gathering site.

100 LL and Jet A available only. If I have my plane together and hangered
there I'll have 91 Ethanol Free gas for our own use. Week day or weekend,
it's up to you. Let me know and I'll make arrangements.

Re: KR> Get it done!

2017-11-17 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
My current project is getting closer to completion. Landing gear (retrack)
change out finished. Return fuel line will be done today (suggested by
Rotec when using 91). Replacing strobe light next week. Adding second set
of seat belts (that's another interesting story). Getting idle adjustment
finished. I've never flown a tail dragger, getting experience in a Cessna
140. Ground taxi in Dec. 18 flying!

Re: KR> More follow-up

2017-11-14 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
I was talking to Marty Roberts a year or so ago about what types of speed
can the KR2 (that was what Marty flew) could handle. I was looking back
then about a 120 hp engine that could get me up to the 200 mph range. He
said he had his plane over 230 mph more than once and no problems. He also
said his plane (and other KR2's) could handle 4-5 G's.

Isn't that kind of a "Korny" answer? I've hauled and helped haul several
KR's. I couldn't have accomplished it with fixed wings. Your grounded where
you build it. Now if you live or fly out of that airport that would help.

Go to FB Rand Roberson and I'll post a picture.

Also maybe a different local for 2019.

2017-09-20 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
I'll be driving up from the Springfield, MO area (plane and I aren't ready
to fly) so I can play shuttle also.

I learned to fly at Dodge City, KS (DDC) back in the 70's. At that time DDC
had the highest wind speed average of any municipal airport in the USA,
average wind speed 15.2 mph. When you lived in that environment all of your
life you just do it! Oh and the "rule" was no solo flying if wind speed was
above 30 mph.

KR> Toe in or Toe out?

2017-09-18 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
I'm replacing a landing bar on my just acquired KR1 with retractable
landing gear. The inside 12 holes need to be like the old bar. However
where the wheel castings attach to the landing bar I can be Toe-in,
Neutral, or Toe-out. I've read some articles that promote Toe-out, but they
don't say how many degrees.

Any suggestions, experience, or thoughts would be much appreciated.

With my head hanging down (but I'll still see the road) I'll be driving to
Lee's Summit, MO. Looking forward to the annual get-t0-gether!

KR> 2018?

2017-08-24 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
PM - Awards Banquet, meal and presentation of awards,* vote on next years
location.*

I thought that in 2016 that we agreed that every other year (even years) we
would have our gathering at Mt. Vernon, IL. If that is correct can we
discuss 2019 at this years meeting?

Thanks
