KR> Rotec
Just a small note, the Rotec carb, is not a fuel injection system, nor fuel injector when compared to what a modern day automotive fuel injection system is. It is a knock off of the Ellison series of carburetors. Their web site does say " fuel injection", if you read down the page a bit. When Monnett came out with his AeroCarb, a POSA knock off, is killed the sales of the EFS-2, so Ben Ellison ceased production of that particular carb. Ellison Fluid Systems still manufacutrers all the other carbs. http://www.rotecradialengines.com/TBI/TBI.htm http://ellison-fluid-systems.com/injectors.shtml Steve Bennett
KR> VW crank failures
Hi Mark, if your referring to a VW hub/crank failure from WI, the only one I am aware of this late summer is Bret T. If so, it is a 2180 from a competitor of ours that still uses a shrink fit hub on stroked engines. The engine is currently in our shop being rebuilt with an American Forged and Machined crankshaft and our Force One Prop Hub and Main Bearing Assembly. Had all of about 50 hours on it. We sent the crank out to METCO (a metal testing lab) to see what it was made of and if it was a forging or not. The material is E4340 and it is a forged crankshaft. The material had a lot of extra sulfpher in it as well as many other impurities. It was a classic break on a stroker crankshaft using a shrink fit hub. Started at back of small keyway, went around the crank until it met the back of the hole where the 20mm x 1.5 thread bottoms out. The subject crankshaft is made By/for CB Performance and this one was just a standard 8 dowel 82mm automotive crankshaft. A little 1835 or 1915 does 80 some ft lbs of torque. The 2180 generates 125 ish lbs of torque. So when using a shrink fit hub on a stroker crankshaft, the engine has to transmit that torque through the same small area on the nose of the crankshaft, just about a 50% increase in torqe!! Works some times but not always! On the stock 69mm crankshaft, the shrink fit hub or tapered short hub works very well. I don't really know of any failures unless one has a prop strike, buddy says dial the prop hub, a new prop is installed and then they go fly. And then the crankshaft breaks because the crack was already started. The other scenario of failure is if the hubs are over torqued. The big bolt 20mm x 1.5 really only needs about 40 lbs to key all in place as its in compression, working just like the prop bolts do. Sincerelyh Steve Bennett ifly...@msn.com

It has done nothing but rain since yesterday afternoon here in FL. Today we had a severe storm, possibly a F1 tornado that came through the airport. Many tent booths down, all of Zenith aircraft destroyed, two AirCams destroyed and about 20 homebuilts flipped over and most likely destroyed. Numerous campers damaged, trees and limbs down everywhere. On the north side of our bidg A, Airparts tent and ECI tent was blown away. Jimmy Tubbs from ECI suffered a head injury from a flying tent pole. WW Corvair tent was down, food tents down, the GEICO ins salesman was injured also. Bill Clapp and company are ok. Bldg A which we are in shook a little during the wind and hail. Some roof vents were removed an let lots of rain in. The police declared it a disaster area and closed down all the blgs and did not let any other attendees in after 4 pm. KR> wings
I bet one could build a set of wood KR wings, constant cord would be easier, but tapered cord doable. About 8 ribs in outer panel - all wood. skinned with 1/6" 45 degree mohogany plywood. GP4 uses similar construction but uses 3/32 45 degree ply on top and bottom of wings. It of course has a cruise speed that is a little higher than a KR. Would not be surprised if they would be lighter than foam and fiberglass, and a whole lot less sanding. Steve Bennett Great Plains Aircraft ifly...@msn.com
KR> Warp Drive
Back in the early to mid 90's the Warp Drive 3 blade 62" prop was used on a VW conversion done by Bob Wilson for the Kitfox and Avid Flyer. Also Mosler was using them on some of their engines. Wilsons 2180cc conversion broke 3 stroker crankshafts in the 50 to 60 hour range, it was becoming predictable. Mosler had several failures also on both stroker cranks and stock VW crankshafts. One crank was sent to a metalurgy company in Texas for testing and confirmed what was thought. The Warp Drive 62" 3 blade props weighed in at about 13 lbs and has no dampening effect. They simply overloaded the nose of the crankshaft ie twist and they broke. The one I saw started in the corner of the small keyway and worked around to meet up with the big keyway for the crank/cam gear. At the time, Warp Drive concured that their prop was not ideal for a VW conversion. Thats the history. Hard to beat a good wood prop with a urethane leading edge. KR> flying kr's
To some degree, flying a KR for the first time is kind of like bowling. A little right or left curve on the ball, a little top or bottom english, all can change the direction of a KR. Think right or left and it goes, not much stick movement. Up takes some movement of the stick, down - not much, just move your head or body forward. An aerial sports car indeed they are! The aircraft is shorter coupled than certified aircraft. Length and width. Full span ailerons in a stiff cross wind, can be at best teasing. If you want to hop and skip sideways across a runway, try a 15 mph direct crosswind on landing until it is planted. Tail wheel slides can happen, main gear skips, all you will learn to deal with in your current flying time. Its a great aircraft to fly, learn about flying, meat a great group of like minded friends and have ton's of fun with. Several K hours of KR fun to date and more to come! The Tiny Tach will work on a Slick Mag. One removes the mag harness cap, drills a 1/8" hole in it, pass the red wire through and wrap it around the unshielded portion of the harness, inside the cap. The new TT are fully programable and will run on just about any engine, as they can be set to sense 45 degrees 8 sparks per rev, 60 degrees 6 sparks per rev, 90 degrees 4 sparks per rev, 120 degrees 3 sparks per rev, 180 degrees 2 sparks per rev, 360 degrees 1 spark per rev, or 720 degrees 1 spark per 2 rev, all in the same tachometer. They also now have a resetable job timer in them, so on can set the oil change interval for example at 25 hours and it wil let you know when you reach 25 hours. Also have a UMA 2-1/4" tach that senses the singnal off the magnets in the magneto in stock. If you run off the P lead, be sure to use a 1/4 amp fuse or so between the mag and the tach. KR> POSA
POSA carbs were sold by HAPI (Homebuilt Aircraft Products International). They did not invent them. Rex, Phyliss, Patrick and Robin Taylor sold the POSA Carb, POSA Super Carb, and the Ultra Carb during the period of time that HAPI was in business. A lot more was learned about the carb and it operation, after they went out of business. Some of this is posted at our web site under installation instructions. If you install a fuel/air ratio meter that reads in numbers not LED's it will make setting up and using the carb a lot easier. In general terms one likes to see 10:1 at idle, about 12:1 at full power and 13-14:1 at cruise. The POSA ltype carb's mixture will change with, more or less fuel in the tank, air pressure changes, airspeed changes if the vent faces forward, pull ups and push overs. You can watch it all on the meter! The Revflow and AeroCarb are similar type carbs in terms of operation and set up. Steve Bennett ifly...@msn.com

KR> HAPI Flywheel
To date we have replaced a total of 107 HAPI flywheels since they went out of business back in the late 80's. Not all were cracking, many just saw the writing on the wall and took care of the potential problem before it became a serious issue in flight. HAPI made another type that was a steel flex plate that did not have the same cracking problem around the dowel pin holes that the aluminum hub flywheel does. All one needs to do is remove the starter and you can clearly see if the flywheel base, not the ring gear is a steel flex plate or if it is aluminum. KR> wheel vs tail landing
In the for what its worth catagory, my original KR-1 that had the aluminum channel mounts, it was almost impossible to do a wheel landing. The CG in the aircraft was a ways - aft. Ray Ellis had a KR-1 at the time with an actual motor mount that moved the CG forward. It did wonderful wheel landings or 3 point landings. The last KR-1.5 I had that was built by Ken Cottle also has a forward CG and did either one well, but wheel landings were easy. Current KR-2 built by Jim Faughn also does great wheel landing. KR> HAPI Flywheels
To date we have replaced 107 HAPI aluminum flywheels in the last 28 years. I would guess that 100 of them were 4 dowel versions. Most of the builders caught the problem via the service bulletin. The flywheel will start to elongate in the dowel pins holes and eventually crack between the holes which then lets the flywheel free spin so to speak. If memory serves, HAPI, the company was sold to Mosler Motors in 1988 -89 ish. This company then became Total Engine Concepts. So it is likely that many of the Mosler/TEC engines also had the acquired HAPI flywheel inventory installed on their engines also.
