FW: KR> Glass cockpit for a KR

2009-04-05 Thread Tim Kelley

An example of what a KR2 glass panel might look like is at
http://cid-357fd7a1d83ef914.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/KR2/Image008.jpg

; or at least a start of one. However, est. price including sensors would be
well over 14K in my opinion More then the cost of the rest of the plane.
But hey, would be pretty cool !!

The advancement of glass panel technology took giant leaps in just the last
couple of years. I am using the Grand Rapids Technology HX flat screen with
synthetic vision and high def screen. Although a little pricey, and more suited
for IFR flight, it is incredible to me just what is in that little box. I have
AOA, Hightway in the Sky, Flight Directer, sythetic approach along with 3D
synthetic vision, weather and terrain with an interal artificial GPS couple
externally to my Garmin 430 and autopilot. I can pretty much run the entire
airplane from that one flat panel primary flight display. This technology is
well under 10K and can be seen in the following youtube videos. >

WELCOME!
22,000 and counting! That's how many people have subscribed to Experimenter. I
want to thank every one of you who have subscribed, and I encourage you to
share this e-newsletter with your friends and fellow EAA members. Spread the
word!

Thanks also to everyone who took time to participate in last month's poll. The
results indicate that at least half of you will not be curtailing your building
or flying in light of the current economy. Here's hoping everyone is able to
find a way to participate in the homebuilt community at some level, whether it
be building, flying, or just helping another EAA member on their project! And
don't forget to answer this month's poll.

I also want to thank those of you who completed the survey for the first issue.
We've received hundreds of comments, which Pat reviews in his From the Editor
column. I always enjoy hearing from my fellow EAA members, so send your
thoughts, ideas and comments to experimen...@eaa.org. Your input will help
guide us to improve future issues of the newsletter.

Enjoy this month's issue!

Paul's Pick
Each month we will feature a historical article chosen by EAA Founder Paul
Poberezny. This month he's chosen his HOMEBUILDERS CORNER column from
SPORT AVIATION, January 1965.
As I introduce this column that I wrote so many years ago - well over half a
century - I am sitting here at my kitchen table seemingly like it's January
1965 again. I was a bit younger then, with a lot of enthusiasm for all of
aviation - in particular, designing, building, and restoring airplanes. Many of
those EAA members are not with us now; some are. I thought I would share my
views from then, which I still hold now. I owe a lot to so many people who gave
me so much support through very trying times as well as the good times,
particularly those in government (back then known as the Department of
Commerce, then CAA and now FAA) who gave such wonderful support and guidance to
me, which still exists today. I'll come up with more history and comments next
month.

How To . . .
Accurate Wood Cutting for Aircraft Construction
One thing you quickly find when building a wooden airplane is that there are
very few square corners. And, while "close enough" may be okay for building a

an overzealous tow-truck driver destroyed the aircraft after an unscheduled

KR> Slight Setback

2008-11-23 Thread Tim Kelley

Hi All, After finishing the retracts/ actuator, I moved on to the rudder peddle
mounts. They had been partially installed with reg. hardware grade bolts. As I
was removing the bolts/nuts, I noticed that one side of the shelf that the
rudder peddles mount to was loose. Upon further investigation I found that one
of the gusset blocks that support the piece for the lower engine mount had a
crack at the glue joint. This did not look good , so I decided to remove the
metal sheet and angle for the cowling mounts that had been on since I bought
the plane, I found that the surface of the firewall was discolored, with a
little bit of surface delimitation. I then decided to pull off the firewall to
see what kind of integrity there was to the firewall and firewall supports. It
took me no more then two min with a wood chisel and hammer to pop off the
firewall. And that's what it did It just popped off, with almost no wood
pulled. Only on one side. The bottom engine mount support came right off with
the firewall. A couple of the gussets came off too. I don't think it would of
held even an engine run up.

I got an appointment with a local EAA advisor today and he concluded that the
firewall / attach area is the only part that is affected. I should be able to
rebuild to acceptable integrity.

So I will rebuild the firewall and firewall supports then I can get
those rudder peddles mounted.

Any comments are welcome, but please send them to my email.

As always , pictures are at, http://kr2az.spaces.live.com/

PS. I also added some areal photos of S. AZ, and the field that I fly from (
Flying Diamond).

2008-11-18 Thread Tim Kelley

Have finnished installation of the retract mechanism and handle/ acuator. The
copper tube will be replaced w a aluminum tube once I get it ordered. works
very well. the handle twists to unlatch the pins. I may end up shortening
the outer part of the handle so it isnt as high.

FW: KR> SWRFI Copperstate fly in.

2008-10-26 Thread Tim Kelley

Was a great fly-in with record numbers in attendance... over 450 planes flew
in. Only 2 of those KRs though. hopefully I can help that next year. Was good
to see Jeff there again, also Philip from Co. Weather was a bit warm, but
otherwise very nice, which is good because tomorrow is supposed to be very
windy.

The fisher 202 flew perfectly. smooth flights coming and going.
