KR> Engine run

2015-09-17 Thread Paul VISK
I had my first engine run at CC34 in Mexico Missouri a few days ago. It's a
?3.0L Corvair. ?It has been an interesting two years, but now I'm that much
closer to my first flight. ?I want to thank William from FlyCorver.com and
everyone else who help me to this day. ?I had a 333kb ?picture attached. I
guess it was too big.

Saw it on facebook. Pretty cool. Didn't it sound great? I should have
told you to rent a Superman cape and take it with you. Would have been a
great photo op.
As they saw, 75% done, 75% to go.

Well today I finished off the engine installation, and fired her up!!

But I can not get the right bank to run. It only runs on the two left

Stromberg CD Carburettor.

It has compression, Spark, timing is right,
fuel in both carb float bowls, spark plug leads are on in the right order.
No blocked intake manifolds, Suction at the carb inlet.

I removed the right carb, pulled it down, could not find any defects, fuel

change. No fuel getting to cylinders.

Both R exhaust , were cold to touch, and cylinder head temps cold. left side
hot. ???

I'll keep playing when I get time again.

Must be a major block in that R carb, but the main

Phil, use carb spray while running and fog over the inlet and make the right
side hit. If the rpms go up and that side runs, then the carb is bad, maybe
a jet plugged or not drilled out correctly. Exchange the carb for a good
one. Also, check that the signal vacuum port underneath is not plugged up,
or blocked. If no vacuum signal, no fuel flow; same with my Mikuni carbs on
the Yamaha V-Star.

KR> Engine Run

2008-10-12 Thread Eric Evezard
Phil,I had a similar problem. It turned out to be a perforated diaphragm and the
right carb vacuum could not lift the piston to lift the needle needed to
increase fuel into the intake system. There were two invisible holes the size of
match heads.Holding the diaphragms up to light to look for holes (as the books
say )is useless as the elasticity of the diaphgrams keeps the holes closed
until under vacuum.Gently stretch the diaphragms, with your fingers ,working
your way around.,to expose any holes.I installed new diaphragms in L and R
carbs and the problem was solved.

Best Regards,
Eric.

Hey fellow kr-netters,

I just pulled N54PB out of the garage and started her up. This is the first
time I have run the engine in about 3months, she started on the first try and
ran like a dream. Ran her for about eighteen minutes, checking pressures,
temperatures, rpm, cylinder head and exhaust temperatures along with manifold
pressure. Everything looks good.

I plan on doing a weight and balance on her sometime this week and then out to
the dry lake for some high speed taxi tests, (love these dry lakes in southern
Nevada). By the way, the weather here is forecast to be in the mid 60's this

KR> Engine Run

2018-05-25 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
For the first time in nearly two years I made an engine run and slow speed
taxi on the 2180 VW. I had hand-turned the prop for 30 revolutions once a
month to keep the parts lubricated. The purpose was to check, for oil leaks
after changing oil (SAE-30 automotive), check the newly moved master
cylinder right brake action, and get the feel for the single place cockpit.
The engine fired up with about a second or so of cranking. Static WOT was
3130 RPM with a Ed Sterba 52 x 52 wood prop. OAT was 87 degrees F. Idle
was 830 RPM; I sat for a minute or so before shutting down, just listening
to the music of the VW.

Got to get that pesky bi-anneal flight review done, then soon.

you have tasted flight, there you will always yearn to be."

Started the 2180 VW for the first time since the fourth flight in August
2014. Since then I had removed and re-installed the Zenith carb to install
a new throttle control. The elevator balance weights had been removed plus
ELT was moved forward of the main spar, and 24 pounds ballast installed on
the engine mount, all to improve the cg. Constructed and installed a new
elevator trim tab control. Main wheels had been moved aft for better ground
handling; axle centers are now 21 inches aft of the stub wing leading edge.

Mount and dismount are now none events. Idle engine speed is 1050 RPM; need
to adjust idle mixture to get 700 RPM.  Brakes and ground handling are good;
speed was limited to under 20 MPH. All engine readings are ok. WOT is 3150
RPM static with the Sterba 52x52 prop.

Next up is to weigh the airplane to see if my goal of moving the empty cg 3
inches forward has been met. I can no longer pick up the prop to get the
nose wheel off the pavement as I had been able to do previous to the wheel
move and weight changes. High speed taxi will confirm or deny elevator
authority for take off and landing. I am following my EAA Chapter Flight
Advisor guidance to approach this next first flight in a one-step-at-time
orderly approach. Even with only 30 minutes flight time on the KR in the
past year, I have performed a complete Annual Condition Inspection. Yes, I
am still legal to take Young Eagles for rides in a rented spam can.

KR> Engine Run Fly In

2016-04-17 Thread Paul Visk

Today was a great day. ?Another day closer to completion. ??Mark L. and Larry
came over to help me start my Corvair for the first time on my airplane. We
missed Rob Schmitt ?He was weathered out. ?There was about 15 people from my
EAA chapter that came out to watch the show.?After Mark figured out a problem
that the condenser was not grounded being it was installen on the front shelf
and after I added a ground wire to the condenser. ?The engine started up with a
fury.
