KR> Gluing Techniques

2008-10-12 Thread Allen Wiesner
I just glued the Shear Web to the Longerons/Stringers at H*/I and have a couple
of questions.
1. What is the best way to spread T-88 on large/long surfaces? It took me the
1/2 hour working time of a batch to get it on the plywood and 5/8" stringers
using a small wood spreader.
2. How much T-88 would I have to mix up to do the entire bottom and/or side
skins?

I think you are currently doing it the best way. On wide surfaces I use the
popsicle stick on its side and apply the epoxy like a grader blade spreads
bitumen on a road. Your 1/2 hour seems about right. I only like to mix
enough epoxy for about 1/2 hours work anyway but I think it remains workable
for up to one hour depending on air temperature and how much you mix.
Mixing larger quantities decreases the time that it remains workable.

I cannot remember exactly how much I used but I think for the side skins it
was about 100ml each but don't quote me on that. I remember the bottom skin
used a large amount where it meets the engine compression brace as I needed
enough to cover the 3 1/2" x 31 1/2" piece of timber as well as the plywood.

I guess the long and short of it is to only mix enough epoxy that you can
use before it starts to go off.

Cheers.

I used a plastic resturant ketchup bottle. I mixed the T88 with a metel rod
with a hook on the end that I flattened out with a hammer. I put the pointed
top on the bottle and cut off a bit of the tip at an angle and squeezed the
T88 out in a long string along the strips of wood and then used a solder
brush to smooth put the bead and dropped the side ply onto the strips, moved
it around a bit to get a good glue bite and let it set up. (Use staples for
clamps). Do not forget to turnthe side over so that the excess forms a filet
with the side instead of driping down the side stringers and gluing to the
table. (Don't ask me how I know).
