KR> Grease on Wood

2008-11-21 Thread patric...@usfamily.net
Having my nephew around here for the last few years, I have not been able to
work on my project due to the mess of junk he would pile on my work table.(He's
53 yrs old with an old car and a motorcycle) He is now gone to Texas and I have
cleaned off my work table. Big problem, he spilled some oil and grease on the
table and the right side of my project was still on the table. the skinned side
was up and has oil stains on the front two bays. there is also oil or grease
stains on the back stringers and longerons. Is there anything that will
neutralize the stains or will I have to rebuild the side?

I have a son who did the same thing with my wood from some old VW parts
(good source for engine though) but it was on wood I hadn't used so I tossed
into the firewood pile. Not sure about on an aircraft.

I would get some grease and fingerprint remover the Panel Shops ( Autoshops)
use to rub off greasy prints and marks before they paint.
This stuff works well, and I think it will do the job.
Type in Wax & Grease Remover and do a search

I would be tempted to duplicate the problem for a test piece that I would then
clean and laminate another piece to it. Put one half in vise and break the
other half off. Verifyng it doesn't break in the glue joint. (Just like
testing your laminated spar caps)

Just a thought.

I find that lacquer thinner works quite well on almost anything like that.

Oily wood...

I was once gifted an RC airplane, called an astro hog. This astro hog
had years and years of flight time on it.

It was very well constructed, but after years of flying, the wood at the
firewall, foredeck and bottom was soaked through with caster and
synthetic oils from the model airplane fuel.

I needed to dry that wood out and epoxy had to stick to it, in order to
replace the firewall.

I used K2R (not KR2) spot lifter. Every day for 2 weeks I'd apply the
spot lifter, every night, scrap it off and reapply.

Afer two weeks, I was able to install a new firewall to that (once) oil
soaked fuselage, allowing me to install the new (twice max recommended
power) german engine I had in surplus.

worked great, lotsa poser too.

Unfortunately the plane was lost when the ailerons responded to
uncommanded input (on short final) from a defective potentiometer in the
RC handset.

The firewall never let go of what was at one time oil soaked wood.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I'll try what I can and let you know the
results.
I sent my nephew to Texas because from Minnesota that was as far as I could
send him and not have him get lost. (straight down I-35, don't get off till you
reach Texas.)

John,

I've also had very good results using K2R Spotlifter to remove oil from heavily
soaked wood and later re-glue the wood with
T-88. However as we say, YRMV.

For safety sake, though, I'd sure recommend that after the K2R treatment the
joints be tested for integrity.

After the spot lifter, I would use trichloroethane - the old school
brake cleaner. Really hose it down. It will degrease anything. Allow it
to fully dry out before gluing.
