KR> Long Wings

2008-10-12 Thread AUnderwood
There was a lot of talk a few days ago about long wings on the kr2. Did anyone
come to conclusion? I talked to Jenett a few years ago about long wings like
the ones that can be built for the kr1 and she said absolutely not. Just
thought i'd bring it up. Well after a long sleep my KorvaiR 2 project is moving
once more.

We are talking about the Diehl wings, which have been used on many KRs over
many years with no problems.

See N64KR at http://KRBuilder.org - Then click on the pics

I have wondered what affect these long wings will have. My first KR had stock
wings and the wingspan on this one is about 4.5 feet longer. If I don't like
the way it behaves, after I get it flying, the option to clip the wings is
available. I am also concerned what affect these long wings are going to have
on the speed of the plane.

All you have to do is research the GeeBee from the 1930s to know that
the above is true. It also points out the problems that come with
extended wings.

More lift = more drag. Land slow, fly slow.

Yes, both planes that I referred to are KR2. The first one had stock wings,
this one has the Diehl wings which have about a 24.5' wingspan. My impression
of it, is that it is too long, but we will see what we will see.

I wonder how the stall speed compares between the stock wing and the Diehl wing
skin wings. I think I need a belly board cause I think this thing is going to
float forever.

How close are you now to your initial flight test? Do you have the engine

KR> Long wings

2008-10-12 Thread D F Lively
Charles:

I have been looking closely at this area and even became more interested whenI
discovered that the KR2 project I took over has wings that are about 10 inches
longer on each side.

I ran the AicCalc program on them and that revealed a stall of 51 @ a gross
wt. of 885 to 890 pounds. Music to the ears of people looking to get under the
sport plane limitations. That means that fixed gear 1835 cc powered KRs should
with an appropriate prop be able to meet the 138 mph max level flight and 51 mph
stall limitations.( an opinion but one must remember that the regulaters make
law where they stand)
