I was up at 4:45 daybreak this morning so I headed to the airport. On the
way I made the decision to go to the local gas station and buy 91 octane
ethanol free gas to fly on. It has been years since I have not flown on 100LL.
At half the cost it was a pure pleasure to fill her up. The flight was as
smooth as glass in the early morning air and I could not detect any difference
at all in the performance of the engine using the 91 octane. I am just a few
hours away from making a huge milestone of 500 flight hours on Corvair power.

KR> This mornings flight.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones

Good morning Netheads,
I was up at 4:30 this morning, checked my e-mails, then headed to the airport
with the news of our loss of a Canadian KR pilot. I was saddened to hear of
this and offer my condolences. Upon arrival at the airport just as light was
breaking day, I did my preflight and run up. It was 32° and there was frost on
the ground but the winds were calm and the sky was clear. When I taxied out the
control tower was not even awake yet so I announced my intentions and departed
to the north and flew 20 miles up to Hartford Airport. From Hartford, I turned
south to Palmyra Airport some 30 miles away. Then I went to East Troy airport
to Burlington airport to WAG AERO airport to Lake Geneva airport and then
returned to East Troy airport then headed back to Hartford airport. When I was
over Hartford, I looked over towards Lake Michigan and seen a hot air balloon
at about 3000' so I headed toward Lake Michigan passing by the balloon on the
way. When I reached Lake Michigan, I continued out over the water about a mile
and circled some fishing boats then headed back to Waukesha airport. As I was
approaching right base for 28 the tower called and warned there was a cyootee
sitting about 300 feet down the runway. I thought I was going to have to buzz
him to get him off the runway but as I was on final, he decided to move on off
the runway so I just sat the KR down and taxied to parking. This was one of the
smoothest flights I ever had. My G meter did not move till I touched down and
visibility was unlimited. Total duration of flight was exactly 2 hours and I
burned 9 gallons of gas. keep building guys cause the rewards are immeasurable.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
This morning I headed out on a cross country to prepare for my flight to the
Gathering. The sky was absolutely beautiful in the crisp cool morning air.
There was no haze and the sky was as blue as one could ever hope for. At
4000' I could clearly see Lake Michigan 30 miles to the east. The Milwaukee
skyline against Lake Michigan was breathtaking. Anyway, level at 4000' on a
180° heading, with smooth air, I was indicating 144mph on the ASI and 159mph
on the GPS. My oil temp was steady at 200° with cruise rpm at 3100. CHT was
295° and the EGT was 1250°. It just does not get any better than this. This
calls for a big YEE
HAA

19 days till the Gathering..that is another YEEE
HAA

Thanks Mark

Our two aircraft appear to be virtually identical in weight and have very
similiar flight characteristics (thanks Orma for the spreadsheet). My fuel
usage is around 22 litres/hour at 3200rpm which also matches you. You're a
bloody copy cat :-)

Have you flown two up yet?

I'm no dummy! But I HAVE flown a passenger! My third flight as a KR PIC
was in Bill Clapp's plane, which is aerodynamically almost identical to
mine. And since then, I've put several hours on mine with a passenger about
Bill's size. I really didn't notice much difference, except it took the
tail a little longer to come up, and the climb rate was less, but not less
enough to really notice. But then my CG is way forward of the range, and it
should be noted that my plane is a far cry from a typical KR2. My CG moves
forward as I fly due to the fuel burn, so when I land it's further forward
than when I took off.Flying with a passenger in MY plane is simply a
non-event!

Now that I'm a somewhat experienced KR pilot, I'm going to move the
horizontal stab to move the CG closer to the mid point and see how that
does. Speed should increase due to the decrease in trim drag. I'll let
y'all know how it affects stability. I love it when a plan comes together!

A machinist in our company shop turned my 10mm prop hub bolts down to the
non-existent GM 11/32-24 thread and I installed them last night. They fit
perfectly, an excellent Class 3 fit! This is only temporary to get me to
the Gathering and back. After that I'll make a new cowling and plenums, and
go to a prop hub that is 1.25" shorter like most Corvair guys are using, to
eliminate the last of the "risk factors" on my engine. I plan to run it in
the next day or so, haul it to the airport Friday or Saturday, and be flying
it again before the weekend is over...

Excellent news Mark. That engine should break in just fine during your
round trip flight to the Gathering which is only 15 days away. For some
reason, I am getting really excited about this years Gathering. Maybe it
is because you and I actually will be flying there to see all of our
friends. This could be another record breaking Gathering. BTW,
you are not really chicken, just smart, you have used two of your nine
livesthat first solo 5G landing and your crank break. I don't blame
you for chancing a four cylinder Corvair KR. See ya in two weeks.

I'm really up to about number seven already, but those are stories for
around the keg. Remind me to tell you about rolling the car four times (I
wasn't driving) and the motorcycle wreck...
