A question for Mark Langford: The Dr Dean hinges you have used look like a
really neat solution. However I have one query. How do you lock the bolt
holding the MW3 Rod end in position?
All the others have self locking nuts, but there is no nut to lock here.

I just epoxied the bolt and made a little cavity in the foam and filled that
with epoxy. For that bolt to turn it would have to break the epoxy bond from
bolt to the spar and then turn that chunk of epoxy through the elevator
fiberglass skin.

Sorry, but I didn't use Dr. Dean hinges. They came along after my time.
Don Chisholm (who unsubscribed last week, if I recall) first gave us the
idea in an early newsletter while building his first KR1. I tried to make
it work but couldn't find exactly the right components. Dean tried harder
and made it work. I'll leave that question for somebody that's actually
done it to answer. Mine are aluminum but use oilite bushings (shown at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kvs.html ). They are light and work fine.

Hi Peter

I am using dean hinges and I have locked the bolt in position by
gluing them with t88 and flox.
the hime joint mw3 is held in position by the I bolt which I have
also glued in position with nuts and washers of course.

Mr. Jones what's your two cents here?

It seems that epoxy is the way to go. I was wondering if Loctite on the
threads would be acceptable.

Yes, the flox can be used for securing the head of the bolt so it will
not turn or you can do as I did and flox the shaft of the bolt through
the wood. I did not flox the head of my bolts. I also placed a large
diameter washer under the head of the bolt to prevent any pull through
or crushing of the wood. If the washer you use overlaps the edge of the
spar, simply grind the washer flush. You may use Loctite on the threads
if you wish but if you do, do not use the permanent type as some day you
may have a need to disassemble the hinges. Plus, even if you do not use
Loctite and have floxed the head of the bolt, there is no way that the
set up will unscrew itself. Another thing is that when you glue the foam
to the spar, you will also be gluing the bolt head then.

I am using them for my elevator, and rudder, but the ailerons? I have never
seen anyone do that. Does anyone have any drawings or photos of such a design?

I like the idea of dr dean hinges.
they are briliant!
I know they are used on the tail but
is it ok to use on the alerons and flaps?
How many should be used if it is ok.

There is absolutely no reason not to. I did not think to do that on my
ailerons but if I had, I would have. I would put one on each end of the
aileron and space five or six more evenly in between the two outer ones. Do
the same on the flaps and I would think a total of three per flap would be
sufficient. This is just my .02 worth and there is no engineering data to
back this up.

These would also eliminate that gap on the bottom of the aileron when you
use piano hinges. Here is the link for the hinges:
