KR> Gathering meals

2018-09-12 Thread Larry via KRnet

Gathering attendees,

I made the trip to Mt.Vernon, still here, to start setting up.  I spoke
with Sean at the restaurant and he indicated he has gotten several calls
concerning food and restaurant hours.  Sean has agree to stay open for
meals after his Friday lunch.  Here is the schedule, *cast in stone*, of
hours and menu.  Please direct any further questions to me personally.
PLEASE REMEMBER, AFTER FRIDAY LUNCH, THE RESTAURANT IS ONLY OPEN TO
SERVE THE KR CROWD.  DO YOUR BEST TO SHOW SEAN WE APPRECIATE HIS EFFORTS
AND GIVE HIM YOUR BUSINESS AND DON'T FORGET TO TIP.    Flat rate means
"no tax", straight up amount and includes drinks.  Eat dinner in the
commons area Friday evening and enjoy the live music at 6:00PM,
including the "Sanding Song #2" and for Larry Howell, "Yep, I'm
officially old".

KR> Gathering update

2018-09-11 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
Just a reminder.  We will have tables set up for items for sale. It looks like
this year we're a little slim on the raffle prizes.   The cash ( gift
certificates)  prizes are from Aircraft Spruce Dynon avionics and Wicks
aircraft  this year totaling $650.  So, how about this for an idea.  If you're
not able to sell your items how about put it on the raffle table. It will save
you the hassle of bringing the stuff back home.   Starting to load the Jeep.  I
should have enough room for one trip.🤔

My sled was chipped to 240 hp at 7800 and ran on 100ll av gas.

Hello KR enthusiasts, new to the group, please update how things go at the KR
gathering, making a solid plan for next years festivities. Just throwing this
newbie question out there. Has any of the builders out there considered using
the 4 stroke 1100 cc turboed efi engine with a gear reduction set up? I had
mine chipped, reved 7800 rpm, produced an easy 240 hp all day long, and weighs
175lbs complete. I have seen dyno tests at 3200 rpm make 120-130 hp.
This engine uses a remote res for the engine for lubrication. These engines are
in the 2013 and up arctic cat snowmobiles, and turboed 3 cylinder in the Yamaha
snowmobile line. May not even need the gear reduction, unless your feeling
greedy for power, they require min 91 octane, ran mine on 100ll. Just a thought
fellas. Have a good time at the gathering, have fun. Cheers.

KR> Gathering meals

2018-09-07 Thread Flesner via KRnet

Gathering attendees,

I made the trek to Mt.Vernon today to see the Light Sport Expo and to
talk to Chris and Sean (restaurant) and finalize plans for the
Gathering.  My primary concern was with Sean and the restaurant.

The restaurant hours are lunch, Monday thru Friday, closed weekends.
Sean will open Saturday evening to feed us before the awards program.
Here is the schedule on food:

No breakfast at the restaurant any morning.

Restaurant open for lunch Friday till 2:00PM

Closed Saturday.  Open at 5:30 for dinner and cleanup.

The only reason Sean is open Saturday evening is for the KR crowd. I
will stop short of demanding that everyone eat there before the awards
program but he is only doing this for us so lets show our appreciation
and all eat there before the Awards program.  It will be his regular
buffet with desserts and drinks.  Cost will be a flat $10 plus $1 or $2
for drinks, no tax and don't forget to tip the help.  In the past I
included a tip for the help when I paid for the banquet.

Bottom line, no need to buy a banquet meal ticket this year.  Just show
up and eat before the 7:00P.M. Awards program.  It all takes place in
the terminal commons area.

In the past Donnie had coffee and some breakfast items for us.  With
Sean having just lost his father a couple of weeks back and just trying
to keep the restaurant open for the two events, this week and next,  I
didn't feel it was right to press him for any more than we are getting
now.  Express your appreciation if possible.

I spoke with Chris and he will find out at their Tuesday EAA meeting if
they will have pizza for us (with a donation) for the Friday evening
music event at 6:00P.M. and maybe a cookout for Saturday lunch.  I'll
know by mid week.

Hat and shirt sales will be limited to the hours between 10:00 and
2:00PM this year so we don't have to ask someone to man the table for 6
or 7 hours a day.  If you didn't order a hat / shirt but want one, check
to see if we have extras left for purchase.

I'll post any additional info as I get it.

KR> Gathering update: We are looking for one more judge

2018-09-03 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
We are looking for one more judge.  If you are interested send me an email.  We
follow the guidelines of the EAA Home Built Judges Standers. If you are not
flying in or you are willing to not be judged (other then peoples choice) You
can be a judge.  You should possess a sound background in amateur built
aircraft construction.  Below is the link to the EAA Judging Standards Manual.

https://www.eaa.org/~/media/files/airventure/about/awards/2017-eaa-judging-standards-final.pdf
Again this year Aircraft Spruce is providing $100 gift certificates for best
judged and People's Choice.  From what I've been seeing and heard.  We're going
to have a very competitive Gathering this year. Good luck everyone.

KR> Gathering update

2018-08-22 Thread Flesner via KRnet

Gathering attendees,

I'm not seeing anything on the Friday evening schedule so I took the
liberty to ask a couple of friends of mine, the Naas Brothers, to
provide a bit of musical entertainment for an hour or two in the
terminal.  These guys do the wine trail and special events circuit and
do a bit of folk, Simon and Garfunkel, Beetles, and an original tune or
two.  I will probably join them for a bit and do a couple original tune
including the "Sanding Song #2" and one I wrote last fall honoring WWII
fliers called "American Heroes".   These guy are down home garage
singers and sound better live then in this workshop recording.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afn0vOEEjUA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkD9JJO-hWg   I think you'll enjoy their
performance.  These guys are "KR caliber" as you can see his flute is
made of PVC pipe. :-)

John, Put them on the schedule from 6:00PM to 7:30PM.  They may go a bit
longer if there is anyone to play to.

Anyone attending the Gathering and wanting a hat or shirt the order

I will be placing the last order on Monday morning so the shirts / hats
can be ordered and finished in time for the Gathering.  As stated in one
of my "Observations of Life", "It's never too late, until it's too
late."  Come Monday morning it will be, "Too late".

KR> KR Gathering

2018-08-18 Thread Flesner via KRnet

The Gathering is just days away and final details are being ironed out
by the "committee".   The awards program is being finalized and includes
a time for anyone wishing to host next years Gathering to make their
invitation pitch to the group.  Anyone wishing to host next years
Gathering should have the groundwork laid for location , local support,
etc., and be ready to address the group and convince the group, in 5
minutes or less, why your location is the best of all options.  May the
best presentation win..

KR> KR Gathering Event Update

2018-07-07 Thread John Bouyea via KRnet
Welcome to Tom & Stephen, the latest to register for the 2018 KR Gathering.
Just 68 days to the return to Mt. Vernon's airport.

As a reminder, this is a "no-host" event. What we mean by that is the
overall duties are carried by a group of attendees, rather than a single
person organizing the entire event. If you'd like to see a particular topic
covered or to do a specific activity, make some plans and volunteer to make
it happen. The list of known/ planned activities is found on
http://krgathering.net on the [Fly-In Schedule] link. The people
participating in planning different aspects of the event are found on the
[Fly-In Contacts] page.
Send us a message of what you'd like to take on and we'll get it into the
schedule.

Looking forward to a great 46th anniversary of KR flight!

Larry,
Thanks for letting me know it arrived as mine just got here yesterday! Langford wrote most of the copy and did the initial document layout so he completed a large part of the job. I did the database stroking, final layout, printing and mailing.

To everyone,
I made the promise at Lee's Summit to help promote the Gathering to all KR registered owners current with the FAA. I went back to the end of 2017 and found just under 200 airplanes. Flyers went to these registered owners. Some are in museums and they got a flyer also. Better to over promote than under-notify.
Hopefully, we get a bunch of new attendees and the "old regular" Gathering attendees will get to gawk at some "new to us" airplanes and meet their owners.
Remember, just 109 days until the biggest KR event of the year!

Trying to get back in the air after extensive mods mostly to correct aft cg
issues, convert to single place and get my eyesight up to par after cataract

Lost the bump on the cowl by moving the engine 2 inches and building a new

KR> KR Gathering update

2018-03-15 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
I'm working on finalizing the forums for this year's gathering.   I do have
room for another fourm.  If anyone has an idea and would like to do one. This
year we'll have two outside guest that will be doing forums.  Tim Hoversten
from EAA Headquarters. He will be doing a fourm on how to buy a home-built
airplane  and how to.take over someone else's project.  He will also be one of
the judges. The other guest is Leland Widick. He is a designated pilot Examiner
based at Mount Vernon.  He will be presenting a Wings safety seminar.  For who
are participating in the wings safety program so you don't have to do your
biennial flight reviews.  You will get credit for this seminar. We're still
looking for door prizes for the drawing.  If your company or a company that you
know of would like to provide items.  Will post their company on our website as
a sponsor.

I would like to thank Robert Schmitt and the EAA Chapter 91 for the great time
in Lee's Summit.
This was my OSH and Biplane Fly-in this year, since I was unable to attend
either of these.
I really liked having the KR's to look at, haven't got to do that for quite a
while. I'm partial to the
KR-2 (no "S"!) and would like to see more of them next year. We need some
KR-1's also!
My wife and I met some new friends and enjoyed the food.
My wife has a simple solution to the Gathering on the west coast...why not have
a KR Gathering West?
Most of us east of the Rockies may not make it, but I'm sure there are lots of
KR's on the west
side of the mountains.
If you weren't there this year, plan to make it next year at Mt. Vernon.

Larry,

Gosh, I didn't know the weather man was able to predict the winds at Lee's
Summit 3 days in advance like that? Two days ago the weather looked like
potential rain and now it looks like beautiful weather all 4 days - except for
the south winds. Who really knows.

The runway status has not changed. The FAA has to do a final inspection before
it can open. The airport says it is on track for Friday morning to open, but no
bets on this either.

Sorry, please pray and make your sacrifice to the KR Gods for perfect weather
for us and a clean FAA inspection.

Thanks,

Rob

Swap Shop.

Sorry, we are not planning to set up any type of a swap shop at the
Gathering. No reason to not bring the engine to try and sell, but we don't
have a space reserved to show it off.

We do have EAA Chapter 91 folks who are working on projects with Corvair

I don't know of any 5th bearing company reps who plan to be there (I
sincerely doubt it'd be worth their time), but several of us can talk to you
about it. Joe Horton and I can certainly hold up our end of that
conversation. Mention what you need for Corvair parts and maybe somebody
will bring some. Otherwise, most people don't carry parts to the Gathering
without a reason. It's not a huge swap meet, generally.

Please come to the Gathering and make an organized pitch to do so. Many of us
love traveling to different locations around the country in our KRs. I've had
mine coast to coast and would love to make a trip up to the NE. You need a
host and a host airport, and need to have a reasonably organized plan. That's
about all it will take and you'll be next year's host.

KR> KR Gathering Location

2017-08-26 Thread Daniel Heath via KRnet
All this talk about the KR Gathering, makes me wish that my third airplane was
going to be another KR. This is not so much that it is a great little
airplane, but that it has a long tradition of family that comes with it. I
hope that when I finish this new airplane, that I will make many more trips to
meet up with the best group of airplane builders and wannabee builders on the
planet. When I do get back into the annual Gatherings, I won't be showing off
my latest updates on a KR, but will be showing off a new engine that would make
an awesome addition to any KR.

I will miss y'all this year, but sure hope to be there next year, so please
choose a great place.

PS: My trip to the McMinnville gathering was the best vacation of my life.
Thanks to the host who stepped up for that location.

This year we had four KRs and maybe 20 people attend the KR Forum at
OSH. Attendance to the Forum is so bad that I've considered not doing
it, but I feel obligated to at least keep KRs on the radar there. And
almost all of those who attend the OSH forum are KRnet members who also
show up at the Gatheringsthere simply for the opportunity to hang
out with the rest of the KR gang for a little while (they're certainly
not there because they expect anything new out of me!) Contrast that
with the much larger crowds and KRs that we have at the Gathering, and
you'll see that people vote with their feet. If you want to do a

Regardless, the folks who attend the Gathering will continue to vote for
location of the next year's venue. At this point, it looks like MVN.
If anybody else is going to volunteer to host it elsewhere, it would be
prudent to give the attendees a pitch now, so we can research the
location ourselves, rather than be caught off guard guessing that it
will work out. For that reason, I'm assuming that the MVN default will
win again next year, and I encourage somebody to consider hosting it
elsewhere for 2019...

I would suggest you show up at the gathering and make your pitch at the
Banquet, for either OSH, or your home airport. That's the official vote and
the only one that counts. Steve did so a few years ago and the next Gathering
was held in Chino. Just in case you missed it 2 of the last 4 Gatherings were
on the west coast. Did you bother to attend either???

Seems kind of odd that you complain that you can't afford to travel more than
once a year, but you want everyone else to go to the most expensive aviation
venue in the country to accommodate your unwillingness to travel. The KR crowd
is notoriously cheap and the KR Gathering would be one of the least expensive
fly-ins you would ever attend. As for the forum content, we have had Dynon and
numerous other vendors show up to pitch their products. The forums at the
Gathering are geared specifically to the KR Builders. Show up. Make your
pitch. If everyone wanted to move the Gathering to OSH, that would be fine by
me. I doubt I would attend, but would be happy for those that do.

Re: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-25 Thread svd via KRnet

"As for moving the Gathering all over the country, you are a bit late to that
discussion. We moved it to Chino,CA in 2014, then to McMinnville, OR in 2015.
That pretty much excluded the east coast folks and many of the midwesterners
for 2 years."

Yes, I agree that any gathering venue faces an inherent problem - either it is
moved around to make it available to folks who won’t or can’t travel 1500
miles, or it is in a “central” location so that one coast or the other only has
to travel 1500 miles.

If we are set on a “central” gathering location, then it seems the decision is
between a quiet, KR only, friendly space, or AirVenture - a loud crowded
distracting event where hotels are very expensive and fun/instructional flight
is restricted.

Seems like a clear choice, but:

1) OSH is a massive event, which is exactly why I suggest it. AirVenture is a
loud crowded and distracting “zoo”. But even at the AirVenture zoo, we can have
a quiet side location where we can set up large meeting/shade tents, food prep,
and hands on KR workshops. Camping facilities are pretty good (showers, power,
bathrooms). And external aviation resources can’t be beat anywhere in the
world. If we want Garmin, Dynon, Revmaster, Hummel, Jabaru, ICOM, etc to give
us personalized KR focused presentations – OSH is the place to do it.

2) The hotel situation can’t be fixed at OSH – they are hard to book and bloody
expensive. So if hotels are a deal breaker, then I agree OSH is not the place
to have the gathering. But for me, I’d much rather camp.

3) Hangers – also not going to happen at OSH, so again, if that’s a deal
breaker its out.

4) I’d much rather go to the KR Gathering than look at a few pictures of it on
a computer – and I think the KR Gathering would benefit from having more of our
members attend. How many more of our members would be able to attend if we did
it OSH? I think a lot. Perhaps not? We will only know if we ask, survey,
try. At best, I can only budget only one cross country fly-in a year until I
retire in 10 or 15 years. I think this is a situation many of us are in. How
many of our members are in a similar situation?

RE:

“I'd say the average number of new "KR tire-kickers" that show up is probably
three, so I'm not convinced there's a ground-swell of potential KR builders
there.” -

My major concern is a Gathering venue that allows more of our members to attend
(which is what I think AirVenture affords). Secondary concerns include:

Improving technical content, variety and opportunity of the Gathering.

Improving public exposure. We don’t need a ground swell, but quality
exposure and interactions can only help to improve KR aircraft and hopefully
increase our safety. It could also only help to improve the health KR suppliers

Improving AirVenture. Experimental / homebuilt aviation should be the hart
of AirVenture and bringing back type clubs to improve their airplanes and their
experience of their airplanes just what AirVenture needs. I think it is also
what we need.

I really think we should do the Gatherings at AirVenture, but if thats not in
the cards I’d be delighted to host a Gathering at KEDU or KDWA - both near
Sacramento CA. Both are hotter than hell during the summer, but camping would
be available. I’d be happy to work with others to host at other central CA
airports that may be more a conducive/pleasant venue. We could set up
shade/forum tents - and I think we could get Steve from nVAero here if the
trolls on this list haven’t quashed that.

RE:

“If you've never attended a KR Gathering, I'd say that you … are not qualified
to criticize the current arrangement”

or

“I have attended both regularly for several years with my KR, so I think I am
qualified to comment.”

or

“Talking it out on KRnet is a good way to get a consensus, but the vote that
counts is at the (Gathering) Banquet.”

I’m just raising an issue that I think is worth considering and may strengthen
our community and improve our airplanes. I’m hoping you didn’t really mean to
be that exclusionary. If you believe that the only members who’s concerns are
valid or count are the ones that attend the Gathering, then ok. I didn’t
realize.

KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-25 Thread Oscar Zuniga via KRnet
To go along with what Jeff wrote, the annual Pietenpol and Hatz gathering is
held at the Brodhead, WI airport the weekend before OSH. Brodhead is 91 NM
from OSH, so it's within range for Piets who want to make the trek to OSH but
far enough away to avoid the general hubbub. Needless to say, with turf
runways the Brodhead event is MUCH more laid back and enjoyable than the
beehive at OSH.

Disclaimer though: I have never been to a KR Gathering, to OSH, or to Brodhead
so my information and opinions are all based on PIREPs from those who have.

Last year was my first year to attend. I thought the get-together was
excellent. This year's event hasn't happened but it sounds like Rob is doing
a great job. I won't for to this year's event but will in 18'. I live in SW
Missouri and I thought about hosting in 19. However maybe someone would like
to host it.

I'll be posting some pics of my new to me KR2 soon.

Re: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-24 Thread Jeff Scott via KRnet

Some other groups host a fly-in near Oshkosh as an alternative to Oshkosh, but
also close enough that the members can hop over to Oshkosh for a day or two if
they choose.  For example, the SuperCub crowd does a great Fly In over an New
Holstein, WI.  They hold a STOL contest, Fly Young Eagles, do several Fly Outs,
and hold a pig roast.  It goes on all week.  That way those like me that would
just as soon avoid the mass of humanity can, and those that want to go join the
masses can do so.  But it's also important to keep in mind that these guys have
numerous fly-ins all over the country every year, so they get together as a
group a lot.

From my personal perspective, if the KR Gathering moved to Oshkosh, I would
simply be done with the gatherings. You would find me over at New Holstein
with the SuperCub bunch.  I suspect I am far from the only one that would skip
OSH. I simply do not like being part of the masses of humanity and I could care
less about watching military and aerobatic air shows. If I was going to fly
into OSH, I would likely fly the Supercub so I can haul all my camping gear.
The KR Gathering is all about KRs. In my opinion, it would be disastrous to
dilute the KR folks into the masses at Oshkosh.

As for moving the Gathering all over the country, you are a bit late to that
discussion. We moved it to Chino,CA in 2014, then to McMinnville, OR in 2015.
That pretty much excluded the east coast folks and many of the midwesterners
for 2 years. There were only a couple of us that flew to both. In the time I
have been attending the Gatherings, it has been hosted in AR, CA, OK, IL, KY,
OR, and this year will be in MO. I would call that spreading it around.
During that time, we found that there is no place that offers us the quality of
venue at a central location like what Larry Flesner found for us by hosting in
Mt Vernon, IL. It is simply a perfect venue with a large open airport,
multiple runways, lots of ramp space, available hangar space, available meeting
rooms, restaurant on the field to cater, camping and showers on the airport,
etc, etc, etc. It simply doesn't get any better than that, and they make it
clear that whether Larry hosts or not, Mt Vernon always wants us back. That's
the reason why we have agreed to the central location with a fabulous venue and
incredible hospitality on an every other year basis. It wasn't an accident.
We love that place just like the SuperCub guys love New Holstein.

If your interest is in OSH, I would suggest you host a get together on Monday
of the convention as there are a few KRs there and some of the KR guys, namely
Mark with Larry's help, host the KR forum. You will find some of the KR
faithful at the forum.

We have a "KR Builders and Pilots Forum" every year at OSH, and it's
published in the EAA forum schedule a month in advance. I'd say the
average number of new "KR tire-kickers" that show up is probably three,
so I'm not convinced there's a ground-swell of potential KR builders there.

Oshkosh is just plain too big, in every way. Everything is spread so
far apart, I'm just about worn out after two or three days of simply
walking around between places of interest. Shade can be difficult to
find, and camping and hotels cost a fortune. Finding a place to do the
usual four or five forums would be problematic as well. To me,
logistics is the number one reason not to hold a Gathering at OSH.

And as John mentioned, there are just too many distractions. The beauty
of the KR Gathering is that it's "all KRs, nothing but KRs". You have a
concentration of builders and pilots that I don't think you'd have
anywhere else, even SNF or OSH, not to mention the airplanes. If you've
never attended a KR Gathering, I'd say that you simply don't know what
you're missing, and are not qualified to criticize the current arrangement.

I don't think having the Gathering at MVN every-other year should be
carved in stone, either. I think what we agreed to is that we'd "try"
to have it at MVN every other year, but historically the next year's
Gathering location is decided at the Gathering Banquet. Talking it out
on KRnet is a good way to get a consensus, but the vote that counts is
at the Banquet. I've not heard anybody volunteer to host it next year,
so if somebody throws out MVN at the Banquet then it'll likely be a
shoe-in, but somebody's got to pitch it, and volunteer to be the host
and organizer. I think we all agree that MVN is just about perfect, but
we'll never know if there's an even better place if we don't keep moving
the Gathering around to find it!

I really enjoyed driving and flying to new places across the country,
and would like to see that continue to the extent that folks volunteer
to host it. If there are no takers, MVN is fine too...

Re: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-24 Thread John Bouyea via KRnet
I lost track of how many times I've been to Oshkosh/ S&F as an attendee, a
participant and a commercial exhibitor. While it is a commonly attended venue,
it's also a zoo. There are so many foci as to distract even a monk.
And I think that's the very best thing of the -two- and only two KR Gatherings
I've attended, 2004 at KMVN & as a helper organizer in 2015 at KMMV. The
dedicated attention to our aircraft, the people we meet and the skills we've
gained in common as we all build and fly essentially the same airplane. I'll
agree with Robert, I got a lot more out of being an organizer that I did as
attendee.
While Jeannette ran RR, she put up her booth and spoke to boatloads of people.
That was preaching to the masses for sure. She sold plans and many of us have
joined into the choir that now build and fly our little airplanes. If we as a
group feel the need to grow our crowd, maybe we need an organized User Group
tent at the larger events. Set up even just a table out among the KRs that do
choose to fly into OSH or S&F. You know, hand out some business cards with the
KRNet.Org link on it, press a bit the flesh and show off the planes on site.
For certain there would be interest. And some of those people might convert
into qualified KR prospects, builders, owners and/ or pilots.
People with multiple trips into both venues like Langford or Jones or Wiltrout
or Waymack may have their opinions to offer and hopefully they will. I'm
definitely with Robert on this one; the KR Gathering is just the right event
for me.

Also, by moving the gathering around the country, I think that has to mean
something outside the mid-west. How about Maine, Florida, Arizona, Washington,

Re: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-24 Thread svd via KRnet

Flying into OSH is quite easy - though it does require reading the AirVenture
NOTAM, and then just doing it.

I’ve flown in eight times in the last 30 years in a Cessna 140, a Bellanca
Viking, an Osprey 2, a Cavalier, and a Beechcraft Bonanza. I find it easier
to fly into than almost any regional fly-in because the Ripon-Fisk arrival
organizes and channels traffic efficiently.

It is also relatively easy to fly around during the morning or evening -
though admittedly not as easy as an uncontrolled airport. There are significant
restrictions during the day, and local flying on the first two and last two
days are hampered by traffic delaying taxi.

But that really seems secondary to the likelihood of increasing the number of
members able to attend, being able to significantly improve the event by
leveraging all the other resources available, and growing/strengthening our
community by preaching outside the choir.

I understand the worry of weakening the community by reducing its isolation,
but we could have a concentrated and fairly isolated event by picking a remote
parking/camping location for all the members and event tent and food circus-
perhaps in the South 40?

Anyways, maybe we could use one of the many online survey / event planning
sites to poll members regarding potential KR Gathering locations with some
emphasis on likelihood of actually coming.

I can set something like that up if there is interest.

Sorry, bad idea.

I have attended both regularly for several years with my KR, so I think I am
qualified to comment.

OSH is really not a good venue for a KR Gathering. Flying in/out is a challenge
many KR pilots don't want to tackle it. That is partly why so few show up
there. And don't think about giving rides, its painful to get in and out of the
airspace.

Yes, the location should change and move around the country. I flew to the one
in California a couple years ago. I believe we all agree to that - but that is
where "You" need to offer to host it at your airport. Don't just put it off on
others and complain about the results.

Sounds like Ken Hurley might be considering hosting a future one? Outstanding!
Thank you!

Subject: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

Disclaimer: I have not attended a KR Gathering and I’m sure I’d love it if I
did.

For the last few years I have been lamenting the decline of "Experimental
Aviation" at AirVenture. It feels like experimental and homebuilt have become
less than a sideshow at OSH - perhaps just an afterthought. I wouldn’t
complain if it was just that everything else aviation was growing at AirVenture
- which is great. However, it seems that the number and especially the variety
of “experimental” aircraft has been declining. (The situation is even worse
if you admit that RV’s are not experimental.)

We have to admit that we are the problem.

We, and other experimental type clubs, have abandoned Oshkosh.

AirVenture is crowded and difficult - especially to fun fly during the event.
But it is also a central unifying event at which a number of type clubs have
significant, important, and useful gatherings. Further,
fun/instructional/demonstration flying is not just possible but encouraged
every morning and evening. There is nothing we could do at the KR Gatherings
that couldn’t be done better at OSH.

I suggest we have the KR Gatherings at AirVenture from 2018 on.

Some will argue that we can have both - but that’s not practical for most of us.

I’m guessing that like 90% of the members of this group, while we would love to
attend a KR Gathering the costs in time and $ can not be justified in light of
the many other things in our lives. Most anyone working or on a budget will
have to pick one or the other, at best.

However, if the KR Gathering is at AirVenture many more of our members
could/would attend.

If the KR Gathering is at AirVenture, we could more easily draw on outside
expertise such as talks to us and hands on support by William Wynne (Corvair),
Scott Casler (VW), etc. If the KR Gathering is at AirVenture, attendees could
learn from the unparalleled gathering of resources and vendors gathered at OSH.

Importantly, we can expose many more to the attractions of KR aircraft rather
than just preaching to the same hard core choir.

The only supportable argument I can imagine for KR Gatherings separate from
OSH, is that many can’t make the 1,300 mile trip to OSH from one coast or the
other. And that argument is completely nullified by having the KR Gatherings in
the mid-west every year or every other year.

So please, lets have the KR Gatherings at OSH - the advantages are huge, the
disadvantages are addressable.

If not, then at least lets move them around the country.

Cheers,
Owen Hughes

John, what's amazing to me. There are 11 airplanes planning on coming and this
does not include all the last minute people that fly in.  If we have weather
like we're  going to have this weekend. It's going to be an awesome gathering!
