I agree these are learning platforms. As to the effect, I think of how minimal stall strips are and yet they have a major effect. BTW, the F4U Corsair, arguably the best piston fighter ever made, had a dangerous tendency to snap-stall the right wing under a couple different conditions during landing on a carrier and during a abort when power is suddenly added. A 6" stall strip added to the left wing changed the whole situation for the better. Someone mentioned affecting the structure of the wing, and I would also be concerned about creating a stress point at the corners of the openings for these things, from which a crack could extend. I would make a spoiler very much like a belly board. ?Lay the spoiler flat against the wing, hinged to the wing, use some sort of actuator arm to extend it.? I feel that I should make some comment about the holes in the spoilers but I believe that we have had that discussion.? Hi Netters, The holiday in Portugal is over, I am trying to catch up on the KRnet postings. The 25 March/06 asks if any one was using spoilers. Yes I am. I built them into the main wings at the start of the building of the center wing. I got a report from gentleman in England that did this too. He reported a real steep glide angle but reported buffeting which he did not like. He also reported no floating on touchdown. As a result , I put the horizontal stabilizers on the top of the rudder to keep them out of the turbulent flow from the spoilers. That called for a big design change. Has anyone used spoilers on the KR? It surprises me that with all the "improvements" folks have tried over the years, I've never seen any mention of spoilers on the wings. It shouldn't be any harder than building a belly-board, but is going to take up some space in the wing and add some weight. Should do the job once the plane is on (or a few inches from) the ground. But hey, if you wanted to fly slow and land short, you wouldn't have built a KR, right? I think "DUMBO" used spoilers with the GAW airfoil. Check newsletter 396 ?? of the newsletters. Not to put the project down, but I would think long and hard about using spoilers for roll control in a KR. I have known of several aircraft that have employed them, and they had some unusual spin recovery techinques to say the least. Several pilots I know have flown twins with them, one specifically the Mitsubishi model, and had nothing good to say about the configuration. There are certain flight conditions where the spoilers just do not give enough roll control response, and I personally would only use them for speed control and altitude control, like the inboard mounted kind used for slowing down, or altitude loss.
