You coming to the Richmond airshow Phil, or bit to far to pedal your 172? I
just remembered, the SAAA Wagga Wagga Show is on soon too.

My Diehl skins are close to 50lbs each.
I'm not sure what the built up wings weigh, but would be interested it Mark

2008-10-12 Thread Serge_VIDAL/DSEC/SAGEM
I probably have the heaviest wings around! Mine are South-African made, by
Peter Eich, and they are made of a thick fiberglass layer (no foam, except
a few ribs). Only the leading edge is filled with expanded polystyrene
foam.

Mark Langford has proved that wing skins could be build very easily, so if
I has to build another KR here in Australia, I think I would make my own.

Mine were 48 and 49 pounds complete with ailerons and lights and paint. I
think Mark may have fuel tanks in his outer panels that may account for
some extra weight.

KR> wing skins weight

2008-10-12 Thread Larry H.
The original statement was about the weight of the premolded wing skins only.
My question now is--are you guys all talking about your total each wing weight,
including spars, ailerons, counter balance and all ? ( a finished wing) or are
you talking about the skins as you would receive them from Dan Diehl? before
you do any work to finish.
I am assuming Joe H. is talking about finished wings ready to bolt on his
fuselage !!!

My wings weighed in at 56 lbs each completely finished. They are AS5046
with 11 gallon aluminum wing tanks, fuel line, ailerons, counterbalance
weights, aileron pushrods, strobes, nav lights, landing lights,
electrical wiring, airspeed/pitot tube, tubing, spars, wing attach
fittings, primer and paint.

That's correct. I thought you were asking for a comparison
between the 2 systems. If that is how much the skins weigh I'm glad I
scratch built mine

KR> wing skins weight / tanks

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
The tanks simply sit on two 1/8" x 1" x 1" aluminum rails mounted from front
to back between the main and aft spars. The aluminum angle has very thin
rubber weather-stripping attached to it to cushion the tanks. Once the tanks
are sitting in the rails ready for permanent installation, I used expand a
foam to fill the space between the tank and the spars. This holds the tanks
in place yet allows movement between the spars and tanks for wing flex. Here
is a link which shows the building process of my tanks. This link is on my
main web page. http://www.krnet.org/wingtank/
Any questions, please ask.
