2012-01-29 Thread Mark Langford
I've been meaning to ask for a new photo to head up the KRnet website at
http://www.krnet.org/ , so if you have a good picture of a KR flying please
send it my way for consideration. Joe's plane has been at the top for long
enough! We'll move it down a notch or two upon receipt of something better,
which may be hard to find...

Vne, Schmeee-n-e!

I knew somebody would say something about that. I can only say that I was
probably trying to help it turn right a little more so I didn't end up over
the runway going the wrong way. There are several other things "wrong" with
that photo, but I'm not challenging anybody to find them. I should've
cropped it down to the ASI, but I think you need the whole thing to get the
proper effect!

The scary thing about that photo is that I wasn't intending to go fast, and
didn't realize it until I glanced at the airspeed indicator. I wasn't at
full throttle, and wasn't in that much of a dive, but had been fighting a
bit of a headwind and had it "hung out" a little further than usual. EIS
info says I was only turning 3598 rpm at -1300 fpm and 231 mph. I get
nervous when I do that kind of stuff at low altitude, but at lower throttle
settings in smooth air it can sneak up on you. Time to set the EIS to alarm
at 230 mph, I guess...

Peter Bancks wrote:

> What was the results of your flutter/VNE testing?

The results were that it didn't flutter at 235 mph. Keep in mind that my
elevator is fully balanced, my ailerons are nothing like stock KR ailerons
and are also carbon fiber and perfectly balanced, and my flaps are also
carbon fiber split flaps, not susceptible to flutter at all. I'm not
advising anybody to go this fast in a plans built KR.

Dr Assaad Assaker wrote:

>...the altitude was near 6000 f and the indicated speed was 230 mph...

If you believe that altimeter, you'll believe I was actually at 52,770'.
Now what's true airspeed? That extra little hand that points to ten
thousand foot increments malfunctioned early in the altimeter's life and I
don't see the point in getting it fixed, since I just ignore it. If I ever
get so far from reality that I think I'm flying above 50,000', I'm done for
anyway. Besides, I don't think my oxygen bottle would get me there. Actual
true airspeed was 248 mph.

I'm always bragging about how cool my wife is, and here's another example.
I was out flying last Saturday taking sunset pictures and just basically

the computer and pointed her at them and went about my business. Tonight I
was looking through them and came across one that I got a real kick out of,
taken while turning downwind for landing, and it occured to me that she'd
obviously seen it and was not concerned in the least, and certainly not

Pat,
There is no ballast in my plane. The CG fortunately worked out perfectly. I
established a CR range of 8-16 inches aft of the leading edge of the inboard
wing. The 14-16 inch area is an absolute no fly zone unless you are ready to
ascend higher than the KR can take you. My CG (full fuel and pilot) worked out
to be 10.2 inches aft of the leading edge. The CG only moves forward one inch
when tanks are completely empty. I have 23.1 flight hours in this configuration
and she is as stable as I could ever hope for.

Actually, there is a hump over each intake where the pipe connects. The one
on the left side is fairly low while the one on the right side is a little
higher. This is due to the intake being farther forward in relation on the
right side. A very minor bump was needed over the fuel pump. I have thought
of all kinds of paint schemes to utilize the intake humps. My son said to
paint eyes on them. That might be pretty cool along with a hawk or eagle
face. But then both of these are predator birdsH..watch
out guys.the Predator may be closing in fast on you!!!

Great picture Mark. Congratulations! Just don't go getting
"neighborhood dog" all over that nice white primer when
they come out to chase you down the street. :-)
