KR> canopy hinges.

2015-05-12 Thread Paul Visk

I'm with Mark L. on not opening the canopy in?
flight.? I'll give a third option, similar to?
Mark Jones but with more roll over?
protection. #

I like the rollover protection. I made a 1.5" fwd Turtle deck bulkhead out of
carbon fiber and foam. ?Boy! Is this thing strong. I stood on just the bar at
220 lbs. I know it would even take a lot more weight then that. See pic

Do you still have the CAD file of your canopy hinges? Can they be plotted on
graph paper? I don't have a CAD program and I am CAD illiterate.

Jack, there's a jpg of the drawing at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/khinge.jpg , and a few more details of the
installation about half way down http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/misc.html
. I guess I need to put that stuff on the canopy page rather than in
miscellaneous. I believe I've made a pdf file of the hinges themselves, but
it's at home, and I'm at work. I'll try to remember to email them to you
tonight, and I really should put a link to those from the canopy page as
well. If I forget, remind me...

NetHeads,

Several folks have asked about canopy hinges recently. If I were to do it
again, I'd build them very similar to the way John Martindale did it, which
is to build up canopy rails on top of the longerons that stradle the
instrument panel and hinge at the outer edges of the canopy. This leads to
a very strong and stable hinge setup. See
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/jmartindale/ for a few photos that will
give you the idea...

HI guys I built my hinges and canopy in the last month the main problem is
getting the canopy frame to lift away from the front deck to over come this
we built a sweeping hinge so as the canopy opens it lifts away it is not to
hard to do u just have to ensure the hinge lifts more than the length when
the canopy it is in the closed position I have photo's of them but depending
on how your front deck is constructed will depend on the sweep of the hinge
u will need I have an alliminium headertank and a removeable front deck the
canopy is mounted to the deck which has a beam across
cheers

KR> Canopy hinges.

2012-11-26 Thread David wade
I am no where near starting wood work yet but that does not prevent me from
starting on other parts such as the canopy hinges and various other metal
parts. The  part I am emulating
is Mark Langfords canopy hinges. I was wondering the procedure that He used to
install them as what I want to do is install them and keep them securely in
place. Any Ideas? I was contemplating installing a bulkhead behind the firewall
to install the hinges but I want other opinions before i make an Irreversible
and expencive mistake.

I'm not sure what you mean by needing more details on how I installed the
hinges. I assume you've seen the details at http://www.n56ml.com/kcf.html ,
but maybe not. The only detail I can see missing is that on one end they
are fastened to a bulkhead that's glassed into the front deck (visible in
the 17th and 19th photos from the top), which serves as a huge stiffener for
the front deck, but its main purpose is to support the canopy frame. The
bulkhead is 3/8 inch foam with about two layers of 9 ounce glass on each
side, rolled around the bottom so it's all continuous, and glassed to the
bottom of the deck so it's pretty solid. I carved out the hinge attach
locations out of the foam and inserted something like 2"x3" spruce blocks
where the hinges attached to the bulkheads, BEFORE glassing the foam. They
are quite solid, and likely overkill. Other details of the installation at
http://www.n56ml.com/kcf.html should be thorough enough, I'd think.

I think a more space/weight efficient and stiffer (side to side) setup is
what John Martindale is using, which is similar to the Bambi's canopy hinge
system, mounted out at the longerons. See
http://john-martindale-kr2.zxq.net/ for that idea. I'm probably even going
to do something similar to that with Jim Faughn's side swinging
canopy...mount external hinges made from carbon fiber that allow the canopy
to swing up from the front instead of to the side, then remove the side
hinge. His turtle deck is already stiff enough to support the hinges out at
the longerons, and the load page is short and direct to the longerons. The
advantages to a front hinged canopy are many, including self closing, lots
of cooling air in the summertime, and more importantly, the ability to sit
up on the seat back and have a great view while taxiing a taildragger.
