Hi Barry, I just installed Dapper Beta 2 on my machine. I've not had a chance yet to work with the wireless. I'm running Gnome almost exclusively now. Even though I haven't had time to get the wireless configured, it *does* see everything, so I'll work with it over the next few days and let you guys know. [Bug 43168] Screensaver unlock dialog prints 2 asterisks instead of 1 for non english characters
Public bug reported: Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Binary package hint: kdebase I addition to English I have Russian keyboard layout configured in KDE. If the screen gets locked with the screensaver and the the Russian layout was active the unlock dialog shows Russian as the active layout. When I try to type my password, 2 asterisks are shown instead of 1 for Russian letters. I use English character password and never used Russian one because of the possible i18n issues with passwords and suspect that their do exists because of the 2 asterisks. Also, I have "Switching policy" configured to "application" in kxkb and thus every new application gets English layout because it is listed as the primary. As already stated in my second comment the bug "fixed itself" after rebuilding the cache several times. [Bug 42926] Re: More granular font selection for the default install
So far as Korean fonts are concerned fonts in ttf-baekmuk look uglier than ttf-unfonts or ttf-alee, but latter two ttf fonts packages are not installed by ubuntu-desktop. And, I, ATM, prefer to have them as "Depends" of language-support-ko, which means per language basis. Replacing ttf-baemuk with maybe ttf-unfonts should be done with upstream fontconfig so it's difficult to proceed, and a common preference by Korean users isn't yet strong for it, IMO. For CJK fonts, you may see some useful info from the font configurations in /usr/share/language-selector/fontconfig/. Some of fonts in the configurations are not also installed by default (or can't be installed or even not mentioned due to license issue). Anyway, for CJK fonts, preferences and properties such as AA and hinting are already well defined in the language-selector package. -- More granular font selection for the default install https://launchpad.net/bugs/42926 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

I think you misunderstood the problem (or my explanation was bad)... The "Web Shortcuts" is the stuff that allows you to type "gg:Kubuntu" to search Kubuntu on Google, for example. It is configured in "Settings", "Configure Konqueror", "Web Shortcuts". If you define a new Web Shortcut with something like : DocU (for Documentation Ubuntu), you won't be able to use that shortcut. [Bug 43065] kdesktop freezes often during RMB actions (dapper)
Public bug reported: Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Binary package hint: kdesktop During right mouse button clicks on icons on the desktop, kdesktop freezes nearly every day. This seems to be a regression bug of KDE-3.5.2. A '-9' signal is necessary to kill kdesktop. This is extremely annoying since switching to an other task and back to the desktop then results in capturing all of keyboard input and only the mouse is working. In this case, ksysguard seems the only alternative to kill kdesktop without requiring keyboard input. This bug is not exactely reproducible and produces no backtrace but is extremely annoying especially for novice users since without the knowledge how to kill kdesktop, a logout from KDE can't be avoided. I'm not sure if this could be a timing issue between the pop-up if the mouse pointer rests on the icon or is related to newly created icons on the desktop. However, this bug also hit me with 'older' icons. [Bug 39419] Re: korganizer krashes when creating event
This seems to be fixed upstream in KDE, it would be nice if the patch from Till Adam would be included into dapper: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=124024#c16 -- korganizer krashes when creating event https://launchpad.net/bugs/39419 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 17571] Re: [Bug 17571] Re: Amarok unstable
Carthik I cannot prvide any debug as I stopped using Ubuntu as I found too many problems with stability. I am a developer and have found that many of the tools I use have problems in Ubuntu distributions ( Quanta+ being completely unstable ). I have changed to using Debian distribution and have none of the problems with Amarok I had previously seen. Sorry I can't help Steve Poskitt __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [Bug 43059] When adding network printer wizard chooses wrong subnet for scanning
Public bug reported: Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Binary package hint: kdeprint When adding a network printer (TCP) with the kdeprint wizard, the wizard offers to scan for printers in the network. It chooses the wrong subnet however, and wants to scan 127.0.1.* and not 192.168.178.* which is the real address of my LAN. I have to enter the correct address in "Settings" but when I try to scan, it warns me that: "You are about to scan a subnet (192.168.178.*) that does not correspond to the current subnet of this computer (127.0.1.*). Do you want to scan the specified subnet anyway?" Scanning works then and the printer is found. -- When adding network printer wizard chooses wrong subnet for scanning https://launchpad.net/bugs/43059 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 42926] Re: More granular font selection for the default install
from http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/base/ubuntu-desktop Coverage after default install: * Japanese ttf-kochi-gothic and ttf-kochi-mincho (2 fonts) -- bitmapped at some font sizes, ttf-kochi-*-naga10 would be better (hinted) but is marked as non-free * Chinese ttf-arphic-* covers Chinese simplified/traditional (2 fonts) -- one bitmapped at some font sizes and one unhinted * Cyrillic, Latin, Greek ttf-dejavu (7 fonts), ttf-freefont (3 fonts), cover Cyrillic, Basic Latin is covered by almost every font, but only these fonts handle minority languages. These two and ttf-mgopen, ttf-gentium cover Greek well. ttf-gentium covers a lot of minority languages in Latin/Greek but still lacks some useful OpenType features for diacritics. * Arabic ttf-arabeyes is mostly decorative fonts (38 fonts) -- ttf-kacst has 11 Arabic fonts instead of 38 but they are not hinted. Neither ttf-kacst nor ttf-arabeyes support Farsi completely, ttf-farsiweb would help * Korean ttf-baekmuk (4 fonts) has hinted fonts. -- has ugly Latin characters (not well hinted) * Indic scripts ttf-indic-fonts pushes several others font packages I think ttf-arabeyes should be split because of all the decorative fonts. Its fonts are hinted so it might be better than ttf-kacst fonts. The CJK fonts are hard to replace or reduce by number. The problem with bitmapped fonts is that they are not anti-aliased as hinted or unhinted fonts, this makes them even sharper than well hinted fonts. My personal preference is for well hinted fonts. Could someone more knowledgeable in CJK review these fonts? DejaVu should really be split (ttf-dejavu contains some experimental fonts) and the default should probably be LGC Sans so Arabic script defaults on a hinted font (DejaVu Sans' Arabic is not currently hinted). -- More granular font selection for the default install https://launchpad.net/bugs/42926 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
