I have the same problem on my Compaq NX9420, ATI X1600, Dual-Core, 2Gig RAM. Live Boot-CD runs into blank screen. Tried ALT-CTRL-F6 / F5, the I was able to use the Bash (after typing some nonsense and pressing RETURN) Tried to start X (startx), but response was "no valid modes found", and had no chance xorg.conf due to read-only file system. Normal shutdown was possible. End of story. btw: Ubuntu 6.10 worked fine except altering resolution setting (had to get along with 1024x768). [Bug 3731] Re: Xorg resolution falling back to 640x480 and/or 800x600 when h/v freqs incorrect
** Description changed: I'm upgrade my system to ubuntu 5.10, after that, xorg can't load the correct resolution of the monitor ( 1024 x 768 ). I'ts only load 640x480. I've used dpkg-recunfigure xserver-xorg, and insert the correct values, but don't work. The system is a Samsung 753dfx and a gforce mx 200 32mb. [Update] A lot of people have reported this same bug. Symptoms include: * Your hardware supports a variety of resolutions, but Ubuntu only runs in 640x480, 800x600, and/or 1024x768 * In the "Monitor" section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf, your monitor is listed as "Generic Monitor", with HorizSync and VertRefresh rates that do not match your monitor * `xresprobe ` fails to work, or does not return accurate information for your hardware. (You can find your driver by looking in /etc/X11/xorg.conf for the line "Driver ..." It will be something like 'ati', 'nv', 'nvidia', etc. If you are using this on a laptop, run `xresprobe laptop`. The work-around for this bug is to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace the rates with ones that match your monitor. The section should look something like this: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" VendorName "SNY" ModelName"SDM-S91" Option "DPMS" HorizSync 28-80 # Important: Use horizontal frequency for your monitor VertRefresh 48-75 # Important: Use vertical frequency for your monitor EndSection Your monitor's documentation will tell you what the frequencies are. It's typically on a data sheet in the back of the book titled "Input Signal" or similar. If you don't have the printed manual, you can usually also find it on the manufacturer's website. + Alternatively, you can try running `sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg` + and specifying the refresh rates through that interface, if you wish to + avoid hand editing config files. Note that this will replace your + xorg.conf file entirely. + The proper fix for this bug is to identify WHY xresprobe isn't working, and for this we will need everyone's help. Here are some ideas on why it may or may not work, that need testing: * Does it work with DVI monitors? * Does it work with KVM switches? * Does it work with DVI-to-VGA adapters? * Does it work with HD monitors? * Does it work with multi-headed systems? * Does it work on non-x86 systems (AMD64, PPC64, et al)? If you are having resolution problems, you can help by running xresprobe (see above) and if it fails, then try to think of anything a-typical about your system, and report your findings in the comments of this bug. -- Xorg resolution falling back to 640x480 and/or 800x600 when h/v freqs incorrect https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/3731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Team, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

My sources.list includes edgy-updates for main restricted universe multiverse, and I've followed the steps at http://kubuntu.org/announcements/7.04-release.php#upgrade . No matter what, it won't offer the upgrade-- when other computers in same house on same network have worked fine. I'll try to attach my sources.list below. ** Affects: adept (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Adept doesn't offer upgrade from Edgy to Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Team, which is a bug contact for adept in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 109483] Re: Fiesty Fawn screen resolution bug at install
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 3731 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/3731 I installed 7.04 used alt F7 to move the install window so that it is viewable. I then went to find xorg.conf to edit. I couldn't find it anywhere. Not in the X11 folder, not by searching and not when showing hidden files. So I thought I would copy the xorg.conf over from XP, the one I have posted above, but I was stopped:"You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions". How do I become the owner? There is no obvious way. I used synaptic to install nvidia.glx and that fixed nothing. I started Firefox to get to the Ubuntu Forums but that was an ordeal in itself. Why isn't there a simple link to that forum? It is such an obvious need. I had to follow link after link to finally get there. The ctrl alt F1 left me in a "consul window" and I had no idea how to exit it. So I had to turn off the power to my computer. How does one exit a consul window? I thought Ubuntu used xresprobe? You said above "Unfortunately, a LOT of people run into this particular bug. It's because the installer relies on a tool called xresprobe, which has proven to be quite inadequate." Well whatever is being used, I hope you can fix it. Let me know when you have a working fix for Ubuntu screen resolution to test and I will test it. -- Fiesty Fawn screen resolution bug at install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Team, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug (via bug 3731). -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
